It sucks.

I wanted to love it. But I don't. It's boring.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 17, 2019 8:43 PM |
It’s needs a remix! Not the best lead track off a Madonna cd. But hopefully the remainder of the cd is better
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 17, 2019 8:46 PM |
I like it, it's more distinctive than the same old techno dance thing she's been pushing since 2005.

Snore-a-rama Cha cha cha

Her songs almost always had the most simpleminded wording, meaningful only to the equally simpleminded listener.

This bitch needs to stop trying to compete with the 20 and 30 year olds and accept her that she is of mature age now.
In other words she needs to sit her old ass down and let the youngsters do this shit.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 18, 2019 6:41 AM |
I like it, Maluma's voice is sexy, it is a fun song. It has way too much Spanish to become a hit in the US, though.
I think she purposely creates songs from a touring perspective at this point. Probably why the stupid cha cha stuff was included.

the joke's on us it seems
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 18, 2019 7:01 AM |
It's a bit too messy, the lyrics in spanish are cringe worthy. "Nos vamos por Detroit" is a tacky double entendré, it's an obvious reference to her place of birth but it also means "Let's do it from behind", something a fifth grader would find amusing.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 18, 2019 7:22 AM |

No bad, definitely using auto-tune all through both singers. But then her voice has never been the sell- it's the hooks and the rhythms.

Madonna doing the "Macarena". The original was shit, but this is 100 times worse. Don't blame Madonna though ...it is the reality of today. The music is dead!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 18, 2019 10:15 PM |
The way too obvious auto tune ruins the song for me. It's a very basic, low tempo, Miami Dance Club Hit.

Unlike other posters I don't think she should quit, I don't think she's too old, I don't think she's the worst person ever and so on, but I also don't like this song. It sounds like one of those generic Pitbull songs that's catchy but not special or unique or interesting. It's forgettable which Madonna never used to be.
I think she continues to make the mistake of not thinking she can pull off a song on her own. Maybe that's what execs tell her, I am not sure. She's been doing it for years now (going back to Justin Timberlake and Britney) and it never works for me. I think her best album in the past 15 or so years was Confessions and other than the Muslim man yodeling or whatever, she had no young new thing featured on any of those tracks.

I don't think that's true at all, R76. Madonna's voice was stronger on her Rebel Heart tour than I've ever heard it. I mean, nobody goes to a Madonna concert for the same reasons they'd go to a Kathleen Battle or Renee Fleming recital, but Madonna's voice has definitely improved. I just hope she classes it up some for the performances and doesn't wear that absurd grill! I HATE THAT THING!

^This.
I suspect her tour will do well--not as well as her Sticky & Sweet or MDNA tours but very, very respectably for an artist of her age. It will be interesting to see just how physical her tour will be, given that she's gained some weight and aged.
What can I say? I'm a 48 year old gay man who grew up with Madonna. I've seen every tour she's ever done and this one will be no different. My favorite though was Confessions. It was just about perfect.

I call the last several years Madonna going through her "Diana Ross Stage." Arguably, she had the iconic success and music industry duration in this generation, that Diana Ross had with her music and career in the previous one; then Diana went to RCA Records, tried to compete with the younger talented ladies coming after her, fell on her ass going through some hard times and no more big record hits, but ended up staying around long enough to have a sort of career/image "comeback" as a bonafide music industry legend in the last 10 years or so. --Give Madge a few more years and bumps on her road, and she'll make it to that comeback stage again, too, IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | April 21, 2019 2:17 AM |
At 117? Vadge is done. When she isn’t getting the attention she wants she goes full desperation mode and pulls ridiculous stunts. Can you imagine what her fucking face will look like at 70??! That’s less than a decade from now. She wanted an acting career, then she wanted a directing career. She’s wanted to do anything but what she’s having to do now. Who the fuck wants to hear Like a Virgin from a 60 year old?!

I've heard it on the beach, in passing cars, pounding out of shops, just about everywhere. I'm at the Setai Hotel and the young Latina maid who cleaned my room today was listening to it. The man who went by the name of Mr. Hollywood on DL was a Hollywood insider. He said Madonna is having a major difficult time aging, she is arrogant, and a very rude person.
I too am 48 years old and I grew up listening to Madonna and watching her videos from day one of her career. However, I out grew her. Also, I can't stand her as a person. Her voice has always sounds like a little girl's voice. I give her credit when her songs came out in the past because they were different, catchy, and electrifying. However, this song stinks and their is nothing new in this song. It sounds like she was recording her self training herself for Dancing With the Stars.
No, I'm not going to act like the typical Fan Fag, and have my head stuck in a toilet bowl acting like Madonna is always flawless ,and she could do no wrong. Her video is like a collage of similar videos she has done in the past and its getting old. She constantly always reinvented herself ,and she would always spark curiosity. She truly was a savvy person. However, now she seems like she is trying to hold on dangling at the edge of a cliff. She wears a stupid eye patch and act like she is being edgy. Oh! she is praying in front of a stain glass church window! This lady is 61 years old ,and she needs to enjoy life and enjoy, especially, those kids that she adopted. If I had a billion dollars I wouldn't live my life trying to constantly stay on top.

We're close to the same age, R112. I'm forty-four and also grew up with Madonna. I grew up in a tiny town in Mississippi where I was not the average gay kid. I played football and baseball, fucked cheerleaders, bragged about it to my buddies, and stuffed my same-sex attraction down so far it took years to deal with it. After high school I went off to college on a scholarship, graduated and became a civil rights attorney. As absurd as it might sound, I'm not so sure I'd be around today if it weren't for Madonna. No one would have ever known but I really, really hated myself back in high school and saw myself as not only defective but also dirty. Madonna was the first celebrity I knew who said being gay was okay, that it wasn't a big deal. It's hard to put into words but she really was the first accepting person I knew. My parents hated gay people, my preacher said they were all going to hell, and my friends reserved the word "faggot" for the most heinous and angry outbursts. Back then it was the worst thing a guy could be called.
Madonna got me through all those years, and now I think Madonna is just doing what she's always done--making the kind of music she likes. I also think she's at a point where she doesn't care a whole lot about what others think, as long as she's happy. She's not perfect and is probably terribly difficult to be around but I love her anyway. I also really like Medellin. I like the Latin beat and I think she sounds great.
It's got to be a tough thing to go from being so clearly ensconced at the top to where she is now, not that she's irrelevant by any means; she's a legend for fuck's sake.
It's bizarre how someone we will never know can still impact out lives in such a meaningful way.

Thank you for the great post, r114. I also remember Madonna being a great ally and advocate for "alternative lifestyles" growing up in the 90s (Europe). I'm not what you would call a die hard fan of hers, I've never seen her on tour etc, but I always listen to what she does with genuine interest and find myself very frustrated/disappointed when she doesn't do well. I'm often frustrated with her choices of singles, DVD concert quality, etc. I will always root for her.
I wish her well.

Miss Billie Eilish makes much more interesting and innovative music than Madonna does now. It must suck to be outclassed and done by a 17 year old! She also has that “cool” factor. Madonna must feel rage when she sees young Billie and Ariana Grande our there killing it.

and Madonna balked at the notion of any kind of conformity and refused to wear it. When Graham bitched at her about it Madonna told her that if Graham had conformed she'd never be where she was, they reached a détente. Graham gave Madonna the nickname "Madame X" and told her that while she was at her school she wasn't Madonna Ciccone but "Madame X."

MTV Live 8s showing nothing but Madonna videos until tomorrow's debut if the new video. If you can watch these and think anyone did music and video better... You have no taste. That at least one of you listens to Janet says so, anyway, but really... She, pop music, and music videos go together better than any other artist out there.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 24, 2019 1:19 AM |
Please. Janet ripped off her brother, which is the only reason she ever had a career.
Madonna came up from nothing and made it happen and happen big.

DLers:
This is a critical time. We need to support the Queen of Pop. She stood by us in the '80s, '90s. Okay, the cunt abandoned us when she married that homophobe Guy Ritchie. And then when he left her, she came running back to us knowing that we would always $upport her.
Okay. So, she looks like a gremlin. Sounds like shit nowadays. And by the time she goes on tour, she will look like a different person.
But the time is NOW. We need to make Madeline a hit. She is the Queen of Pop! She brought us Vogue! Like a Prayer! Borderline! Frozen! Candy Shop! Iconic songs (okay maybe not the last one - but SHE thinks it's iconic).
Let's support our Queen.

by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 24, 2019 4:35 AM |
It will be interesting, though, to see how her ticket sales do this time around.
I'm a huge Madonna fan but there's no denying there were some soft sales for Rebel Heart. I saw both shows in Toronto and the second show was nowhere near sold out even the day before the show. I easily got a catwalk ticket which I think was one of those VIP tickets reduced closer to the show.
The biggest surprise was her Australian shows did not sell out despite the fact that she hadn't toured there in over 20 years.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 24, 2019 4:51 AM |
I don’t believe that story about Martha Graham calling her “Madame X” for one single second.

According to Wikipedia which cites Billboard Boxscore as the article's source, all of the Rebel Heart Australian tour dates sold out including Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

That story about Martha Graham calling her Madame X sounds like bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | April 24, 2019 5:41 AM |
I'd believe someone who actually got last minute seats over any Billboard stats. Some artists have it in their contracts that there will be no empty seats- so tickets are given away.

Janet Jackson can't even give tickets away, that's why she has to support non sold out venues. . . if they are ever reported at all
by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 24, 2019 6:10 AM |
With all the Madonna hate on Datalounge, I'm sorry r149 but I gotta side with 147 and Wikipedia. And if Madonna ever "gave away" free, unsold tickets to avoid having empty seats, it would be EVERYWHERE. There'd be stuff about it in the press. Madonna may not be able to sell records like she used to but for a woman over fifty she can sure as hell sell some concert tickets. The Madame X tour may not do as well as tours in the past but I suspect it will do respectably, especially for a sixty year old broad.

The hard truth is that Madge is a legacy artist. Her catalog and past hits are all she has going for her. Kids today don’t even know who she is or why she is famous. All of these desperate attempts to be relevant are just that, desperate.
She might have a one album comeback like Tony Bennett or Eric Clapton did in the 90s, but it would have to be a great album, not the shit she’s been putting out there for the last 10 years or so. Best advice for her would be to embrace her status, keep touring, and put out an occasional single and album that are quality and keep her name out there.
I don’t like Madonna. I do like Mariah Carey. However, I would tell both of them the same thing I just told you.

I don't think this is necessarily true. I'm forty-one and my sister is forty-eight. Her nineteen year old daughter who's at Tulane knows exactly who Madonna is and so do all of her friends. In fact, my niece likes Medellin better than I do. Now, that's not to say they're all streaming her music 24/7 but they are most definitely aware of who she is. And some of them, not all of them, but some of them, especially the females, are into Madonna precisely because she continues at sixty to do what she wants, wear what she wants and say what she wants--behavior that is usually reserved for men.

I'm R114 and it ought to be pretty clear that I'm a Madonna fan. But, damn, I just watched the video for this song, and although I really like the song, the video is . . . not so hot. The words "cringe worthy" are absurdly overused on Datalounge, but I gotta confess that I think they may apply here. I don't like that stupid grill that Madonna insists on wearing and wish that she'd gone an entirely different direction with the video. Twenty-five year old Maluma looks ridiculously sexy in it and Madonna, regardless of her sixty years, just doesn't look her best. She gained weight and just isn't styled well, so the notion that Maluma is going to head off to Medellin with her is far fetched. The whole video is too long and there's too much talking (praying) in the beginning. I personally think it's far and away her worst video to date, but strangely enough the You Tube comments are mostly VERY positive.
I feel sad now.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | April 25, 2019 1:43 AM |
I'm with you r167 although I disagree it's her worst video. But it's her worst lead video of a campaign and she looks... weird in the video. They try to hard with all the filters and blasting her with light to make her look younger.
Maluma is hot as hell though. He looks gorgeous and brings the only spark to the video. And he does it all clothed!

by Anonymous | reply 169 | April 25, 2019 1:49 AM |
Well, perhaps I can make you feel a tiny bit better R168. I work in video production and can tell you that from a professional standpoint it's a really, really, really beautifully produced and shot video. The color saturations are astonishing. No, I'm not fond of Madonna's diamond grillz and she's absolutely packed on some pounds and can't move like she used to, but this is one of the better videos I've seen in a while. Despite Madonna sucking on Maluma's big toe. I don't care for the eye patch and Madonna should have lost about 25 to 30 pounds before shooting this, but GOTdamn, who's looking at Madonna when smoking hot Maluma is there.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | April 25, 2019 2:04 AM |

She's got a gut! She looks fat for Madonna. That bow or wrap or whatever it is around her waist when she's the dance instructor doesn't hide it. The camera obviously tries to cut away anytime her pregnant gut is in view but it's clear she's A LOT bigger. They should have just shot the whole thing in the bed. She looks beautiful in the blue dress with the hot latin dude.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | April 25, 2019 4:42 AM |
Her last act is starting off so tragically. Her legacy as a trail blazer, who despite little natural talent, built an empire and changed society would allow a female singer to say, do, or be, is about to be forgotten. Instead, we will remember her vain attempts to compete with 20 year old singers, be sexy by sucking toes and fingers of guys/girls who don’t even know who she is, and her terribly bad plastic surgery. Her narcism will be her downfall.

R138, Madonna did all the gay stuff on stage and in her music videos to shock people starting in the 80's.The extent she was expressing herself in her career was very shocking because it taboo. She has always been a very shrewd business woman and she knew that shocking people and being edgy sold. She knew how to get people to talk about her A LOT, the talk being good or bad didn't matter because at least people were talking. Once M used her lesbo shtick she dumped it and moved on to something else. She wasn't trying to make changes of any kind in society. Her goal was to be a major, major star, and to be extremely wealthy. She was driven at all costs. She used people and dumped them once she couldn't benefit in any way from them. Now she is worth 1 billion dollars ,and she is known world wide. Her longevity in her career is incredible by her savvy mindset.

The video is beautifully done and she looks great. Maybe it’s the lighting, the camera angles, the makeup, the clothes... whatever, it doesn’t matter. The fact is it’s a great video and the character she plays looks amazing. She does not look fat and she looks much younger than 60.
The song is good, and I’d say it’s starting a new genre. There are definitely Latin/reggaeton influences, but it’s not like anything else out there.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | April 25, 2019 2:30 PM |
I actually like the video! She is heavier though and her dancing isn't as effortless as it once was. I really HATE the eye patch and I agree with the others about that ridiculous thing on her teeth, whatever it's called. The color in the video is so bright. I wonder if that's really Madge riding the horse and rolling on the ground with the horse?
by Anonymous | reply 186 | April 25, 2019 3:37 PM |
I do appreciate the fact that the song isn’t a carbon copy of everything on the radio right now. One thing that’s drastically hurt Madge’s credibility in the past ten years or so is going from trend setter to trend chaser. This song, it seems, is different. She’s not trying to be Ariana Grande. She didn’t ask whatever producer was hot two years ago to produce it. I think she’s finally realized at this point radio isn’t going to play her songs so she might as well just make music that makes sense to her.

She dances like a white woman of her age. She’s ok I guess but she’s not exactly energetic on stage and rarely stays in sync with her backup dancers. Most of the time they’re doing all the work. But rhythm is definitely something she’s always lacked but then again she’s a white woman who trained in ballet.

I would be surprised if it hadn't, since My Heart Will Go On was from late 1997 and Believe was released more than a year later, in early 1999 and they charted in two completely different year end tallies.

Confessions was not a "Believe" moment. Madonna was still popular and coming off her most successful tour to date. "Hung Up" was a big enough hit after the commercial failure of "American Life". It closed the Confessions Tour and hasn't been much of a moment on any tour since. In fact, she murdered it on Sticky &Sweet and MDNA. It surely didn't surpass staples like Vogue, Like a Prayer, Music, etc.
