'The Boys' Superhero Series on Amazon

Developed by Seth Rogen and Eric Kripke, written by Garth Ennis. Starring Karl Urban, Jennifer Esposito, Jack Quaid, Elisabeth Shue, Chace Crawford.
In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, the show centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “The Boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty. It is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good.

Premieres July 26 on Amazon Prime.

Looks grotesque. Can't wait.

Green vest dude is fuckable. Clayton Coleton? Cameron Cumdump? Whats his name?

by Anonymousreply 1April 17, 2019 6:04 PM

Chace Crawford is a cutie but looks like every Midwestern boy I’ve been with. He’s not special.

And he’s a boring “actor”.

by Anonymousreply 2April 17, 2019 7:36 PM

Agreed, but he looks so sexy in the shot at 0:32. Though that bicep vein is doing most of the heavy lifting.

I wanted to say that he's the poor man's Ian Somerhalder, but their careers seem comparable these days?

by Anonymousreply 3April 17, 2019 7:52 PM

He used to get compared to Ian and Zac Efron back when Gossip Girl was on.

Ian and Zac have a natural screen presence that can’t be taught. Chace lacks that, and charisma. He gets by on being a pretty white boy.

Any gay male representation?

by Anonymousreply 6June 17, 2019 5:39 PM

The critics have reviewed it based on one episode so far (screened at the Tribeca Film Festival) so no details beyond that are known. I'm seeing some pointing out a misogynistic undercurrent in the season opener already, so that doesn't bode well for having a gay character. We'll see.

Renewed for another season!

Premieres next week.

Could be they’re lampooning misogyny, no?

by Anonymousreply 9July 19, 2019 11:59 PM

r9 Yeah, really hoping that ends up being the case. It does have three female writers attached to it, so we'll see. It would be unusual for them to be so tone deaf in 2019.

Final trailer. Out this Friday.

I'm already annoyed with Urban's accent.

SO SICK OF SUPERHEROES

by Anonymousreply 12July 23, 2019 6:19 PM
I'm already annoyed with Urban's accent.

Isn't that his actual accent? He is one sexy beast, so can pretty much have whatever accent he wants.

by Anonymousreply 13July 23, 2019 6:59 PM

Male nudity, hell yeah!
It would have been easy to turn The Boys into a misogynistic splatterfest, but Kripke navigates around that trap while also dropping in a few elements that add equality to the picture. Sure, Billy Butcher calls the Statue of Liberty a “slit” and throws the word “cunt” around like confetti, but multiple men strip down for the show — including Karl Urban and another character who goes full-frontal — while there’s no corresponding female nudity. The contrast is rare enough to feel refreshing, and the nudity in the script isn’t sexualizing the characters. It feels like a polite nod to the female gaze, rather than anything specifically gratuitous.

So the misogyny isn't as bad as it looked at first, phew! And the director apparently cut out a rape scene or something like that after the screening at Tribeca, so that's nice.

This is the most blatant case of false advertising since "The Never-Ending Story"!

by Anonymousreply 15July 25, 2019 9:08 PM

One of the characters (Popclaw) has claws that come out of her arms and legs. She uses them to burst a guy's head while sitting on his face and orgasming.

Chace Crawford shows his ass in the first episode

On the fourth episode and I'm madly in love with Frenchie, who is actually an Israeli actor Tomer Capon. His bod is [italic]exactly[/italic] what gets me going. My mouth starts watering just thinking about him...

I'm enjoying the show A LOT, though I really wish we had at least a one-day no spoiler policy because r16 robbed me of the shock that happens in the third episode. But whatever, I only have myself to blame for checking in before I finished the season.

Katie Couric’s daughter writes for this show

How many years have we been into this superhero obsession in American pop culture? Has it been since 9/11/2001? Will it ever end? Will we ever get tired of it?

by Anonymousreply 22July 27, 2019 12:53 AM

Karl Urban ass. It's remarkably boyish and underdeveloped, compared to his huge chest. It just sort of collapses into a pancake when he's not taking a step. Not an ass man, it seems.

by Anonymousreply 24July 27, 2019 12:58 AM
Will it ever end? Will we ever get tired of it?

People will get tired of it once the creators stop coming up with fresh new takes on the genre. But it's all the rage now because you can believably (and inexpensively!) CG a superhero taking flight even on a television show and it doesn't look cheesy. Do you know how long people - fans of comics, in particular - have been waiting for this breakthrough?

by Anonymousreply 25July 27, 2019 12:58 AM

Any shirtless screen caps of Chase?

by Anonymousreply 26July 27, 2019 1:18 AM

The comic book series on which this is based is insane but really gripping. The author just went all out, envisioning a world of corporate superherodom, where most of the super heroes are deeply disturbed. Think of athletes who have never had anyone tell them no and now imagine a Superman character in that situation.

He also tried to envision what might happen in the real world with various characters. Like, can a speedster really learn to turn and stop on a dime? And, if not, what might happen when they're running and they're trying to stop or trying to change direction? Can a super hero really stop a plane? Or land it?

The author also lampooned some of the existing DC and Marvel super hero groups like the Justice League, the X-Men, and so on. The take on the X-Men is particularly disturbing.

I don't know about the series but there are gay characters and gay sex in the comic book, although not any of the main characters, if I recall correctly.

It's funny seeing Simon Pegg in the series as Hughie's dad. The character of Wee Hughie is absolutely based on, and drawn to look like, Simon Pegg. And Simon, apparently, approved.

by Anonymousreply 27July 27, 2019 1:19 AM

Yes, there was gay kissing and implied oral in the first (or second?) episode involving a tertiary superhero called Ezekiel.

r26 I'll post them here if it there's a shirtless scene. Don't want to burn through the show too fast as it's really enjoyable.

by Anonymousreply 28July 27, 2019 1:24 AM

I don't think you want to see Chace shirtless on this show, he's got gills

by Anonymousreply 29July 27, 2019 1:28 AM

Another surprise ruined. I am officially out of this thread until I've finished the season.

I will just say that I laughed when I saw Homelander's stuffed crotch for the first time. It's bigger than anything the Pit Crew on RuPaul's Drag Race has ever attempted. 🐘

by Anonymousreply 30July 27, 2019 1:36 AM

Both Preacher and The Boys comic series were created and written by Garth Ennis. I consider Preacher one of the best comic stories I've ever read but will hate Seth Rogan hygienically challenged looking ass for life for the shitty TV adaptation. For this reason, I'm reluctant to watch The Boys because Seth's name is attached to this TV adaptation as well. I may at least check out the first episode because I wasn't as devoted to The Boys as I was to Preacher. The Boys comic was a hell of a lot of fun.

r27 is right. The Boys' take on the X-Men was sooo twisted.

by Anonymousreply 31July 27, 2019 2:50 AM

The Boys is a fun trip. Very dark, graphic humor and fucked up at times. Homeland is one scary sociopath bastard. The actor who plays Hugh is cute.

Love the running gag (well, if you can call it happening twice in the season) regarding Deep (don't want to spoil it though).

by Anonymousreply 32July 27, 2019 7:14 PM

Loved it and wanted more, although I could've done with more superheroes fighting each other. Hopefully that'll come next season. I'm legitimately scared of Homelander.

Chase's arm veins are [italic]unreal[/italic] and there's no trace of any fat whatsoever. I bet he lives in the gym. Which probably means he's dumb as shit.

And another shot of his ass, which confirms the one at r18 wasn't a butt double. The saggy skin on the back ages him a bit.

I would finger his gills so hard. Man, that scene was hot. It was a bit like FTM porn, now that I think about it. And good for him for shaving his wonderful hair off on camera.

His beautiful chest hair was quite the loss, though, R34.

by Anonymousreply 35July 28, 2019 3:34 PM

r35 Yes, totally! And I wondered why that was even included. I thought he was making himself more aerodynamic because he wanted to swim faster or something? Weird. But the character is such a doofus so it kinda works.

by Anonymousreply 36July 28, 2019 3:38 PM

I assumed he was either headed out to sea and wanted to take on a less humanoid (and more aquatic) look or he was preparing to kill himself, R36.

The actor playing Homelander both frightened and aroused me. I hope he'll do a nude scene in season two!

by Anonymousreply 37July 28, 2019 5:58 PM

I believe he was naked a lot in Banshee. Dude is typecast as creepy, complicated menace.

by Anonymousreply 38July 28, 2019 6:06 PM

Understandable, R38, since he's gorgeous but has the shark eyes thing going on.

I'll check out Banshee, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 39July 28, 2019 6:12 PM

r32, Huge is played by Jack Quaid. He is Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid's son.

by Anonymousreply 40July 28, 2019 6:15 PM

I'd like to have seen Homelander nude too, but I think it would have ruined the illusion of him being the biggest baddest superhero since the actor isn't as shredded as Chase. This is him in Banshee (I think) and he looks similarly lean in his more recent Insta pics.

Did anyone else think Jack Quaid had a low-key hot bod when he changed his shirt in his room and when he was wet after his baptism? 👀

The Deep is losing it, Britney Spears style. That's what the head shaving was about. He finally realized that Vought dropped his fishy ass and he's never allowed back to join the big seven or be considered important again by anyone.

by Anonymousreply 42July 28, 2019 6:20 PM

I saw Episode 1 late last night and will binge watch today. So far I'm quite impressed with this adaptation far more than Garth Ennis' other adapted comic series Preacher. Stinky looking Seth Rogan's name may be attached but he's obviously not the main one calling the shots, thank God! Preacher's adaptation is atrocious.

I see the Episode 2 description and it says Starlight gets revenge on Deep's MeToo bullshit. I can't wait to watch.

by Anonymousreply 43July 28, 2019 6:33 PM

I enjoy Preacher for what it is, but it probably helps that I'm not familiar with the source material.
I see the Episode 2 description and it says Starlight gets revenge on Deep's MeToo bullshit. I can't wait to watch.

That's a bizarre description, especially for episode two. Have you watched it already? Are you satisfied with her "revenge"? Or lack thereof...

by Anonymousreply 44July 28, 2019 11:39 PM

Chace has a nice little ass. Very tight.

by Anonymousreply 45July 29, 2019 1:07 AM

Hilarious how quickly, Hughie moved on to having feelings for Annie. Robin who?

by Anonymousreply 46July 29, 2019 1:35 AM

r46 Robin did appear to him constantly during his interactions with Annie. Though I'm not sure how much of that was love and how much PTSD from witnessing something so disturbing.

by Anonymousreply 47July 29, 2019 1:39 AM
The actor playing Homelander both frightened and aroused me.

I admit I found him hot in a very creepy way.

Wasn't the time lapse of season 1 a few weeks, though R47? (Just going from the sub-plot of Trsnsparent's disappearance and The Seven's tracking of him being missing). That wasn't much of a mourning period for her.

They didn't do much with the Queen Mauve character and almost nothing with Black Noir. I was disappointed, especially with the almost non useage of the latter.

Are we allowed to talk about the ending yet?

by Anonymousreply 51July 29, 2019 3:03 AM

I felt the same way R51. Queen Maeve was a massive disappointment. There was a great setup there for her but they never bothered to get her there.

But that's how I felt about the entire series.

It seemed like a lot of world building and the payoff was kind of lackluster with characters I didn't care much about?

I felt bad seeing Chase Crawford looking great, with a couple of scenes of rear nudity, and his character was a giant asshole. The series couldn't decide if he was a jerk, if we should feel bad for him, if he's just stupid or if he's a mega freak/joke.

by Anonymousreply 52July 29, 2019 3:20 AM

Chase Crawford looks like a total thirst trap on this show in that skintight uniform and bulging arms out

by Anonymousreply 53July 29, 2019 3:26 AM

Agree about all of that, R52. The writing made it difficult to give a shit about any of the characters, really. The actors were all attractive and engaging and they made it as watchable as it was.

by Anonymousreply 54July 29, 2019 3:26 AM

I don't know why exactly I had the impression that Chase was a shit actor going into the show, but he was pretty competent. No false notes to be seen. As for his character, it is HARD to redeem a MeToo-er in 2019, and goofiness alone ain't gonna to cut it. Just look at Legion. The zeitgeist has changed too much for that to be tolerated anymore, and thank fuck for that.
Queen Maeve was a massive disappointment. There was a great setup there for her but they never bothered to get her there.

I think the problem is that they cut the season at the eighth episode, instead of giving us ten. I was actually stunned that that was the finale. I quite enjoyed Queen Maeve (her thirsty-ass wig notwithstanding) but she would benefitted the most from two more episodes, especially if you cut out some of Urban's speeches. Though I'm still not entirely sure what her power set is. I was similarly confused when Starlight got shot several times with that big gun and just walked it off. These things should have been better established from the start. A little montage, perhaps?

by Anonymousreply 55July 29, 2019 2:01 PM

Better writing, is my suggestion, R55

by Anonymousreply 56July 29, 2019 2:35 PM

r56 I don't know if you're referring to the show or my post, but that was me pre-coffee, so I have an excuse for all those grammar mistakes. 😬

I did enjoy Maeve's scenes with her ex. And you know it'll make the bisexuals happy to have some representation. But yeah, I kept waiting for that showdown between her and Homelander, and it never materialised.

The treatment of Black Noir - who I assume is Asian or Asian-American? - was way more egregious, in my opinion. Fewer scenes with the boring A-Train and more scenes with Black Noir, would be my suggestion for the second season.

by Anonymousreply 57July 29, 2019 2:54 PM

I'm sorry for being unclear, R55/R57. I meant that the characters and plot points mentioned, could have benefitted from better writing from the writers of the show. I apologize if my comment seemed a snark towards you, personally.

by Anonymousreply 58July 29, 2019 3:18 PM

Can't wait for The Watchmen to drop now, so I can compare and contrast the two. Is "Vought Industries" supposed to be a play on "Veidt Enterprises"? The Watchmen comics came first, right?

Oh, and can Elisabeth Shue be in more things, please? She was just luminous in this role.

by Anonymousreply 59July 29, 2019 3:30 PM

*I checked just now to be sure and it's just "Watchmen", without the article. So sorry about that.

by Anonymousreply 60July 29, 2019 3:32 PM
The treatment of Black Noir - who I assume is Asian or Asian-American? - was way more egregious, in my opinion.

Having read the comic book, without spoiling anything, he's very important but he's not Asian.
But yeah, I kept waiting for that showdown between her and Homelander, and it never materialised.

In the comic they're nearly all horrible people except for "Starlight" and "Mother's Milk" (the black guy from "The Boys" team) & "Queen Maeve." I think they did a good job at presenting that but yes, they really never brought it on home with her.

by Anonymousreply 61July 29, 2019 6:26 PM

r61 Thanks, so that tea ceremony was played for laughs, then? I thought they were showing their backgrounds with those videos, but I guess not.

by Anonymousreply 62July 29, 2019 6:30 PM

That plane rescue mission with Homeland and Queen Maeve was brutal.

I am confused about Queen Mave's power. In the opening a money transport vehicle drives into her and her body basically cuts it in half and she doesn't get even a scratch, but a plane crash would get her killed?

by Anonymousreply 63July 29, 2019 7:27 PM

Well, I think it was more on the line of she should not be seen there, R63, with all these dead people in a drowned plane.

by Anonymousreply 64July 30, 2019 4:47 AM
That plane rescue mission with Homeland and Queen Maeve was brutal.

It was incredible. The way Homelander turned and started threatening everyone with incineration... chills.

by Anonymousreply 65July 30, 2019 12:25 PM

R59 Shue is so engaging, and her voice is really comforting. She definitely has the maternal energy that worked in terms of her dynamic with Homelander.

by Anonymousreply 66July 30, 2019 3:12 PM

It's also nice to see that she hasn't gone down the surgery/filler route so many of her peers have. Her sun damage is getting a bit extreme, though.

by Anonymousreply 67July 30, 2019 3:14 PM
Her sun damage is getting a bit extreme, though.

I wasn't going to say anything but yes, an acid peel would do wonders for her face. Same goes for the actress playing Starlight. Those brown spots (not freckles!) jump out like crazy in HD.

by Anonymousreply 68July 30, 2019 3:20 PM

Chace must've got himself together. You fickle queens were just saying how he has passed his hottie expiration date but now you say he's thirst trapping!

[bold]‘The Boys’ Co-Creator Eric Kripke Reveals the One Scene ‘Amazon Said F– No, You Have to Cut’ That[/bold]
Amazon Prime Video clearly let “The Boys,” its new, very mature superhero series, get away with a lot on screen that you wouldn’t see in any broadcast or cable show — and definitely not in any film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But seeing as this project, developed by Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s graphic graphic novels, it’s safe to say the streaming service knew what it was going to be dealing with from the start. And according to Kripke, there was just one scene the tech giant made him leave out.
“There was ONE SCENE that Amazon said F–K NO, you have to cut,” the co-creator told fans during a Reddit AMA Tuesday. “I couldn’t quite understand why considering everything else we have in the show, but: Homelander [played by Anthony Starr], after being dressed down by Stilwell [Elisabeth Shue] in episode 2, was standing on one of the Chrysler building Eagles. He pulled his pants down and started jerking off, mumbling ‘I can do whatever I want’ over and over again until he climaxed all over New York City.” Also Read: 'The Boys' Gets Early Season 2 Renewal...

r72 Thanks, that is truly bizarre. I thought Amazon was cooler than that.

by Anonymousreply 73July 30, 2019 9:27 PM

R68 Also her neck is very aged; she had that turkey neck thing in several scenes.

I think avoiding the overuse of surgery, fillers, and botox is working great for Shue (though she may be using a bit of botox), but that doesn't mean she shouldn't try to reverse the premature aging. She needs some sunscreen, tretinoin/Retin-A, and maybe a couple peels.

by Anonymousreply 74August 1, 2019 8:03 PM

I wonder how giant Homelander's loads are? And when can we post spoilers for this show? Is there a thread?

by Anonymousreply 75August 1, 2019 8:33 PM

Just finished watching the show. Now I need to have a baby with Homelander. Fuck you Superman and Captain America !

by Anonymousreply 76August 1, 2019 8:39 PM

r75 Yes, you can post spoilers here. It's been, what, a week now since it premiered? I only asked for one day no-spoiler window upthread.

by Anonymousreply 77August 1, 2019 8:40 PM

So the Doctor said that the fetus was ageing prematurely, so we are to assume the son has rapid growth too, or is there a time leap in the show?

by Anonymousreply 78August 1, 2019 8:45 PM

I got the impression that the show starts years after Urban's wife and Homelander had their affair. That premature aging thing might have been another lie by the doctor, to try and sell the stillbirth story more convincingly.

by Anonymousreply 79August 1, 2019 8:49 PM

there was an 8 year gap between when Homelander and Butcher's wife were having the affair and the beginning of the show

by Anonymousreply 80August 1, 2019 8:53 PM

So we don't think it was rape? And Goddammit, I'm going to miss Elizabeth Shue so much

by Anonymousreply 81August 1, 2019 9:05 PM

the way Butcher's wife looked at Highlander, I don't think it was rape

by Anonymousreply 82August 1, 2019 9:12 PM

No, I don't think it was rape at all. And honestly, I was glad when that was revealed. My ears were bristling when he was relaying that backstory because that trope of the woman getting raped and that act sending the male protagonist on a journey of revenge is so tired at this point, I never want to see it again, on any medium.

I'm going to miss Elizabeth Shue a lot as well. The second season cast better include someone just as charismatic as her.

by Anonymousreply 83August 1, 2019 9:13 PM

Yes, Shue was a big loss, but it was a great twist.

by Anonymousreply 84August 1, 2019 10:28 PM

Are we sure Shue is not coming back? I wouldn't be surprised if she was juicing Compound V and may have her own super powers.

by Anonymousreply 86August 1, 2019 10:32 PM

It's impossible to understand why! It sounds so tasteful.

by Anonymousreply 87August 1, 2019 10:38 PM

r84 I thought that twist was great though I was expecting Homelander to incinerate her baby before her eyes instead. I've got a dark mind like that apparently, because I also thought they'd deal with Translucent by putting that huge drill up his rectum and turning it on.

The actor playing Translucent is sexy.

by Anonymousreply 88August 1, 2019 10:40 PM

r87 Don't think "tasteful" is their determining criterion. After all, there's a woman who basically gets liquified in the first episode.

by Anonymousreply 89August 1, 2019 10:41 PM

Overall I really like this show, but the faking of NYC seemed poorly done compared to other shows set in NYC, but filmed in Canada. Is the comic set in NYC or some made-up superhero city?

by Anonymousreply 90August 1, 2019 10:54 PM

I didn't get the impression that this was meant to be NYC?

by Anonymousreply 91August 1, 2019 10:56 PM

^^^ Up thread they mentioned that he would be pissing off the Chrysler building, and there was a scene where they did an overhead shot of Central Park, and then used a generic green space for in the park.

This is from the wikipedia entry for the comic:

"Cherry" (#3–6) At the Boys' first meeting in New York City, Butcher reveals that their first mission is to intimidate a teen superhero group called Teenage Kix.

by Anonymousreply 92August 1, 2019 11:08 PM

Then it must be some weird hybrid in the show. They definitely wouldn't CG in those crazy skyscrapers if it was supposed to be NYC.

Obviously the setting of the show is New York, they even call it by name a few times in the course of the season.

Also while this show tried to be more realisitic when it comes to some things (I loved Homelander explaining that the physics of a Superhero trying to stop a plane doesn't even make sense, he would just go through the thing if he came at it with that much force), but it still did the man of steel/woman of kleenex thing where a normal human can have sex with someone as impossibly strong as Homelander without issue!

I agree with those saying Shue was great in this role and she will definitely be missed in Season 1. Also I don't see Jack Quaid's son, to be the kid looks like Michael Shannon spit him out.

I had tried reading the comics some years ago but it was a little too tryhard, "omg, look how edgy this is!", the show did a great job taking the concept and presenting it with more depth. Look forward to Season 2.

by Anonymousreply 94August 4, 2019 4:49 PM

Then it must be NYC in some future and/or alternate timeline.

by Anonymousreply 95August 4, 2019 4:52 PM

Also the going out of the way to keep A-train alive felt a a bit strained. I guess I can accept the final scene with Hughie and A-train we are supposed to see that he is trying to walk back from the darkness and doesn't want to kill A-train like he killed Translucent, but why wouldn't Kimiko had killed him in the prior episode? That she just breaks his leg and walks away is silly, he was running the gang that kept her hostage, she is a brutal personality and would want him dead.

by Anonymousreply 96August 4, 2019 4:57 PM
Also the going out of the way to keep A-train alive felt a bit strained.

Hated that. Just fucking kill him already, he's obnoxious!

by Anonymousreply 97August 4, 2019 4:59 PM

Is Butcher supposed to be from down under or Britain? Karl Urban's accent switches around from his native one to an attempt at an English accent.

Speaking of which hearing Simon Pegg attempt to speak with an American accent felt so weird.

by Anonymousreply 98August 4, 2019 5:11 PM

Butcher is supposed to be Scottish, like the comic's creator Garth Ennis is. Karl Urban is from New Zealand.

by Anonymousreply 99August 4, 2019 5:17 PM

Yes apparently Karl Urban was supposed to be playing a Brit, yikes, that accent is up there with the worst accent attempts I've seen.

They shouldn't have bothered, just have him been an aussie/kiwi. I guess Garth wouldn't accept the change.

Definitely. Just let him do his damn New Zealand thing; no one would care.

by Anonymousreply 102August 4, 2019 5:34 PM

I'm so fucking turned on by Jack Quaid. Meg and Dennis did good.

by Anonymousreply 103August 4, 2019 5:51 PM

It's weird to me that four of the five major people to significantly darken the tone of comics in the last thirty years--Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, and Grant Morrison--are British. (Frank Miller, a New Yorker, would be the fifth one.) I think it's because superhero comics were much rarer in the UK, so the Brits could see more easily the possibilities for what superhero comics could be changed to show.

Moore was I believe the first one to show in graphic superheroes being lawless and potentially ultraviolent , grotesquely efficient sadists and mass murderers with "MiracleMan"/"MarvelMan." He indulged in one scene of Young MiracleMan/MarvelMan torturing and killing a sizeable part of London's population, and Ennis and Morrison never got over seeing that--they both indulged several times in elaborate scenes of superhero torture long after Moore had abandoned it. "The Boys" is the nastiest in this respect--the comics show superheroes going nuts and actually eating babies, intentionally decapitating people, ripping people in half, fucking corpses of people they've killed (all in incredibly bloody detail). It didn't win many awards as a comic, nor garner much praise, and I don't think it even sold that well, so I am surprised they made it into a series.

by Anonymousreply 104August 4, 2019 5:56 PM

Whenever Karl Urban spoke all I heard was Manu Bennett, another OZ actor. I didn't think that was a British accent at all.

by Anonymousreply 105August 4, 2019 6:06 PM

My sincere apologies. Of cours Karl Urban and Manu Bennet are from New Zealand, not Australia.

by Anonymousreply 106August 4, 2019 6:07 PM

No need to feel bad r106. The differences between an Aussie and Kiwi accent are fairly subtle.

r111 Same. If Esposito with her badass blond highlights tells me she's CIA Deputy Director, I believe her 100%. Another great piece of casting.

I remember thinking Chace Crawford couldn't act back on Gossip Girl but I think they use him better here. It starts with him raping someone but you still can't help but feel bad for the airhead loser and how the fish are his only friends.

Man, he is still locked in the closet though after all these years, even after he was outed.

by Anonymousreply 113August 4, 2019 7:23 PM

Yeah, I liked Chace's acting just fine here. I thought his facial expressions in particular were great. His biceps veins did a lot of the heavy lifting, though. You could see those puppies from across the room. I wonder, are there any complications associated with those jutting veins? Do they become a problem in old age or something?
Man, he is still locked in the closet though after all these years, even after he was outed.

Wait, there have been rumours that Chace might be gay? Because that would be hot if true. I've never seen Gossip Girl so maybe that's why I missed that particular gossip train.

by Anonymousreply 114August 4, 2019 8:13 PM

Rumors is an understatement when it comes to Chace Crawford, the Observer did this big piece on the ethics of hiding celebrities sexualities that ended with them outing him
At a crowded movie premiere in Midtown recently, The Observer witnessed a young movie and TV star—a dashing young man who’s been involved with several starlets despite whispers about his close relationships with other men—sitting for the entire party in close conversation with a well-groomed gent, even as his co-stars circulated. As we passed, the plus-one stared us down, as if to say, “Step off,” or perhaps, “Don’t you dare write about this.”
There’s also the simple matter of defusing the knowing laughter of a public that maybe just doesn’t care that much anymore. “If you’re in the closet,” said Mr. Bass, “you get made fun of more than if you just come out!” If he’s in fact gay, that’s a lesson Chace Crawford—the dashing, engrossed young man at the premiere—may do well to heed.

r115 Damn, they treated the closet a bit differently back in 2012, didn't they? And I can't believe that guy is now the chief television critic for Variety. He'd never write something like that these days. And he's all sorts of insufferable on Twitter, eurgh.

by Anonymousreply 117August 4, 2019 8:31 PM

I just finish watching the series last night and I just don't understand why the showrunners/writers have to be sooo damn different from the original comic story. I say that about Preacher as well. Seriously, every time I see Seth Rogan's ugly stinky looking ass, I just want to punch him in the face. Is he's self-esteem and emotional security so small that he has to make such drastic unnecessary changes. I gave Preacher just one season. I'm gave The Boys one season and I won't be coming back.

by Anonymousreply 118August 6, 2019 11:53 PM

What was different about the TV series from The Boys books?

by Anonymousreply 119August 7, 2019 12:11 AM

There is less decapitations and women getting raped r119. And also way more girl cheesecake, way less guy cheesecake.

by Anonymousreply 120August 7, 2019 1:01 AM

I just watched the first two episodes. The writing is heavy handed AF

But I'll admit they are exploring interesting ideas

by Anonymousreply 121August 7, 2019 1:04 AM

r120 In other words, they have responsibly translated the source material into another medium, so that's in touch with the zeitgeist. Imagine that.

by Anonymousreply 122August 7, 2019 1:05 AM

When the woman was fingering Deep's gills, it was obvious that that was intended to be same as her fingering Chace's butthole and then pegging him. At first he said it hurt and then he started moaning.

by Anonymousreply 123August 7, 2019 1:08 AM

r123 Totally missed that but you're right, it could be read that way. I loved the way she dominated him, though I didn't appreciate her continuing to finger him after he clearly said that it hurt him. That's not something you do with (first time) hookups, even if that hookup is a gross MeTooer.

Grossly cleaned up compared to the comic and they really screwed the storyline. Hughie was scottish, The female was a part of the group, A train was white, The Deep did not have gills or talk to fish...Stillwell was a guy..I mean the only similarity is Homelander is a psycho but at least in the comics you know why.

by Anonymousreply 128August 9, 2019 4:24 PM

So looks like there is a gay male character, but he's not a main character and is closeted.

Of course one of the main female characters is at least bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 129August 9, 2019 4:28 PM
Hughie was scottish

Literally doesn't matter.
A train was white

Same here.
The Deep did not have gills or talk to fish...Stillwell was a guy

...

by Anonymousreply 130August 9, 2019 4:29 PM

In the one-off book, "Herogasm," all the heroes are having an orgy weekend (under the guise of joining together to stop a world crisis) and Homelander seduces a young stud hero into his bed because he can.

by Anonymousreply 131August 9, 2019 4:31 PM

r119 - the differences as listed above. Stillwell is a man in the comics, There is no Vic the VEEP. There is no 9/11 screwup where homelander throws the jet into the brooklyn bridge on purpose. A train is black and dating pop claw. Compund V seems to flow like water in the show, in the book it was 9 billion dollars for one injection, the reason why the 7 were the most powerful, There is no Herogasim in the show, the ending is totally different (in the comic Billy's wife died in childbirth and he killed the baby with a lamp). No mention of Lamplighter, Nubia or Paddy being zombies. The deep is totally differnt, no Jack from Jupiter that I saw, whole characters are left out...no G-MEN storyline at all. Pretty much the basic concept was used to create a whole new story.

by Anonymousreply 132August 9, 2019 4:31 PM

r131 Yeah the Captain America analog desperate to be in the 7. Homelander fucks him every year because he can and finds it funny. The scene where queen Maeve and Homelander screw up the jet rescue is based off the comics but in the comics, it was the basis for the truce between the Boys and the 7. In the books it was 9/11 but they had shot down the first two jets, and then Vic the Veep who was a Voight plant calls off air force so the 7 can stop the last plane, but since they never actually do missions they fuck up royally (Lamplighter gets killed in the mission, Homelander accidentally kills a kid, then ruptures everyone's eardrums shouting then just says fuck it and lets it crash into the Brooklyn bridge killing everyone on the plane and on the bridge). The Boys have proof of this and use it to stop Homelander and crew from killing them all- while the boys work on getting rid of all the other supes.

by Anonymousreply 133August 9, 2019 4:38 PM

It is not that surprising that a dark comedy about superheroes gets some attention in this superhero summer blockbuster movie obsessed culture.

by Anonymousreply 134August 9, 2019 7:45 PM

r134 True. It also occurs to me that this is how Suicide Squad should have looked like. Then again, maybe a dark take on the superhero genre just works better in a TV series form? On the other hand, SyFy's Deadly Class was a bit of a miss as well.

And to think we're getting another one soon, with Watchmen.

by Anonymousreply 135August 10, 2019 6:07 PM

The whole tone of the boys comics was much darker, more brutal. They were not afraid of the heroes, they were injected with compound V and were there to to expose Voight.

by Anonymousreply 136August 10, 2019 6:22 PM

r136 Perhaps they'll slowly elevate the brutality? Especially now that the response to the first season has been so good. Maybe they'll make even bolder creative decisions in the second season.

But also, the series needs some heart and hope occasionally, so people can connect to it. It can't all just be senseless brutality all the time.

by Anonymousreply 137August 10, 2019 6:27 PM

I concur. There is not a good Balance of good versus evil on this show. Too nihilistic

by Anonymousreply 138August 10, 2019 6:31 PM

r138 The comic was that way. Annie was supposed to be just a good two shows who constantly got taken advantage of until she got bitter like Queen Maeve. The writer liked her as she progressed as a character and gave her a stronger story arc. Annie and Hughie are the heart of the story. They have gone pretty far off from the story (The end of season one totally contradicted the comics). Some major plot points in the comics have been skipped. The boys are all superpowered to a degree, enough to be able to kill the supes. The whole 9/11 storyline is left out which is a principle plot point in the comics. Compound V is a secret in the show but Billy, the government and all the heroes know about compound V.

by Anonymousreply 139August 10, 2019 10:55 PM

The whole thing with Homelander, Butcher's wife, and who Black Noir really is was the OMG moments in the comics. The drastic change they made in the TV series for that alone was enough to take me out of this show. Just like Preacher. I gave it one season and fuck it. The changes are waaay too drastic and totally unnecessary. It's not that hard to adapt something, stay mostly faithful to the original source, and still use your artistic style to make it your own.

by Anonymousreply 140August 11, 2019 1:59 AM

The show is better than the source material. Thank goodness they were smart enough to make changes to turn it into a better story.

by Anonymousreply 141August 11, 2019 2:07 AM

r140 they had to so something given the end of the boys comics. The problem with the show is they don't really make it clear how the seven came to be. There is no rhyme or reason as to why homelander is a fucking psycho. I did like the Religious angle where the Mr. Fantastic analog was a raging homo who preached that homosexuality was a sin. I won't spoil the Black Noir twist in case they plan on doing it on season 2. The other thing not even seen in the comic was the creation of super-villains by Homelander. In the comics, even the villains are heroes because it pays better.

by Anonymousreply 142August 11, 2019 2:09 AM

I love this show!

by Anonymousreply 143August 11, 2019 5:02 AM

I've enjoyed the show so far but as a Londoner, must say Karl Urban's accent is atrocious.

It's embarrassingly bad. Had they said he was a Kiwi or Aussie who'd lived in London for a while or something I'd kind of believe it but for a character who's continuously described as 'a Brit', it's horrific.

by Anonymousreply 144August 11, 2019 2:44 PM

I haven't watched it yet is it a show where everyone is evil just some are more evil than others?

by Anonymousreply 148August 14, 2019 7:19 PM

r148 not really evil - Corporate greed mixed with wide-eyed enthusiasm and a dash of psychos and Christianity mixed in.

It really is a good story toned down from the comic which was fucking violent.

by Anonymousreply 149August 14, 2019 8:02 PM

Just like reality, R148!

by Anonymousreply 154August 28, 2019 4:47 AM

I loved it, looking forward to S2.

Chace Crawford is one of those strange men that I can objectively recognise is very sexy, he has an incredibly handsome face and incredible body, but I just don't find him sexy myself.

Those of you who are saying you felt there was no explanation given as to why Homelander is a psycho - did you actually watch everything? I thought it was made incredibly explicit that the fact he was raised in a lab and treated like a test subject rather than given a normal childhood being raised by a loving family is why he turned out the way he did. It's literally stated in the conversation he has with the retired scientist when he says he is his biggest failure.

I thought Elisabeth Shue was amazing, I would love there to be a twist whereby she was juicing up with Compound V and came back to life. I wasn't really sure what the purpose of her baby was.

by Anonymousreply 155August 28, 2019 10:24 AM
I wasn't really sure what the purpose of her baby was.

To make Homelander jealous. The baby got more love and affection from its mom, Madelyn, than him. There is a scene of Homelander being pissed off that Madelyn misses an event because of a baby check-up appointment. Homelander is a sociopath who craves motherly love.

by Anonymousreply 156August 28, 2019 10:39 AM

I have a feeling that baby isn't quite dead yet. Elizabeth Shue was amazing, I'm pretty sure they'll bring her back for flashbacks if the baby isn't really dead. The series was kind of fun but Karl Urban just sucked all of the fun out of it whenever he was on screen. His character was poorly written. Nothing but cliches and he always had a mouthful of scenery everytime he was on camera. Plus, I could give two fucks about his back story, so who cares about his wife?

Otherwise the cast was really good. Homelander, was especially creepy. I'm also guessing that they'll bring in some other evil baddie to replace Elizabeth Shue, but those are some big shoes to fill. I hope they don't take it more over the top than it has been. Its the comedy and humanity that grounds it and stops it from becoming just another comic book shit storm

Two other things that I think will be brewing next season. The one guy in the 7 who got no story at all? Can't remember his name, but I'm thinking he will be part of a Resistance from within the 7. I think he's a plant. Also I think Starlight's father will come back into the picture and become part of the fight.

by Anonymousreply 157August 28, 2019 11:14 AM

I’m thought stillwells baby was homelander’s

I thought it was well worth watching and I'm definitely not a Marvel/comics guy. The Deep didn't rape Starlight, he had her suck him off. Also, if Translucent's skin was impenetrable then, when they put the explosive up his ass and blew him up, why didn't it just blow up his internal organs but all stay contained within his skin instead of exploding all over the walls?

by Anonymousreply 165January 27, 2020 1:47 AM

r165 There are orifices through which his internal organs exploded, though it would be exceptionally difficult to film an explosion like that.

Yes, this show is fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 171June 27, 2020 1:08 AM

I'm watching this for the first time in preparation for the new season. (I had been meaning to watch it for a while and the announce, ent of the new season spurred me to watch it.) It's very watchable, but it does have the problem of the original comic book series in that it's often disgustingly violent for the sake of being disgustingly violent--Popclaw killing her landlord by crushing his brains out while she sat on his face during sex was just nasty, and so were some of the other deaths the superheroes caused. And the cruel cynicism of the plane crash episode was pretty hard to take.

It's worth seeing just for the hot guys. I'm not as into Homelander as the rest of you are, but the actors who play The Deep (Chace Crawford) and Frenchie and A-Train are all gorgeous. Crawford's ass is unbelievable, although i wondered if they used a stunt double for the naked ass scene in the first episode.

Elisabeth Shue, Erin Moriarty, the guy who plays MM (Laz Alonzo) and--surprisingly--Crawford (!) are terrific in their roles, and much better than the other actors. No one else is bad, except Karl Urban, and that's mostly due to his awful distracting British accent (his real NZ accent keeps slipping through). Jack Quaid is not a bad actor, but he is so strange looking it's sometimes distracting (he looks like Rainn Wilson).

I'm sure I'll watch the new season, but the cynicism and the ultraviolence do get pretty nasty. It's addictive, but it's not pleasant.

by Anonymousreply 172August 8, 2020 5:50 AM

Interesting they aren't going to release the second season at once. Just 3 at first, then a weekly release.

A good thing I say. I'll always binge something in one weekend if I can, but at least this time it lasts longer and generates more conversation.

by Anonymousreply 173August 8, 2020 6:56 PM

I finished this first season this morning. The brutal tortures and murders are so nasty that I'm not sure I can keep watching for another season.

There was a plot point I didn't understand. The groupie in Ohio sexually assaulted the Deep's gills, but I thought he was superstrong and could throw her off (he at least seemed superstrong in the episode where he and Starlight took out the criminals by the waterfront). I was very impressed with how Chace Crawford took an unlikable character (a sexual assaulter himself, and also someone with fairly sociopathic tendencies) and made him sympathetic.

It's an interesting take on how corporations and pr agents manipulate celebrities to manipulate in turn the public. There are some weird things in it. As with many "dark" takes on superheroes going back to Alan Moore's Miracleman, the omnipotent superhero has to be made into a complete sadist who brutally murders lots of people in vivid imaginative ways just because he can do it and get away with it. I honestly don't think most people would do that even if they had the power-I think this sick fantasy is something more peculiar to Garth Ennis and Alan Moore then something profound they're saying about the human condition. At least here there's an explanation about why the Homelander would be so twisted (he was raised in a lab and deprived of parents), but even that seemed unlikely--the scientists would know about attachment disorder, which has been well studied since the 50s.

I am surprised others found the actor who plays the Homelander sexy. He's a pretty good actor, but he's wrinkled and middle-aged, and that blond pompadour just didn't do it for me. His costume obviously looks padded out with fake muscles.

Another problem I had with the series is that some of the characters were very poorly written, particularly Frenchie (he might as well have worn an "Apache" striped shirt and a beret) and Butcher. Butcher seems like a lot of Ennis's antihero/ mastermind characters: nasty, profane, and manipulative. I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to follow him since he's as mean and murderous as the Seven.

by Anonymousreply 174August 8, 2020 7:46 PM

It really is Crawford's butt in the final episode of season 1, but I don't think it's his butt in episode 1--they used a butt double for that scene, using someone with a really spectacular bubble butt, and with strange tan lines that his character would never have.

by Anonymousreply 175August 8, 2020 9:01 PM

Chace Crawford has directly claimed it was not a butt double r175.

On Monday, Ackles took to Instagram to announce that once he finishes filming his final two episodes as Dean Winchester, he's going to suit up on season 3 of Amazon's The Boys as Soldier Boy, the original superhero. After Soldier Boy fought in World War II, he became the first super celebrity, and a mainstay of American culture for decades. The gig will reunite Ackles with Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, who's the showrunner on the Amazon series.

R172 I guess it's all subjective. I think Jack has a "guy next-door" cute face.

Chase Crawford - he could use a bit of age on his face, at 35. He's a bit frozen of "pretty boy face". It was interesting when he shaved his hair, you could see the stubble is gray. Nice, worked out body. His character is an amusing sad sack.

Some of the aftermaths don't make sense. The people who continue working together. For example Starlight revives A-Train and they are going to continue on the 7 (in season 2). They explain this by the corporations being so utterly corrupt, and the Boys being sociopaths with hearts, but it doesn't fully satisfy me.

I loved Shue, most of all, having worked and met many women VIPs like her, a stereotype, but well done.
