Songs you thought were sung by someone of the opposite gender

I thought this was a woman singing for years.

by Anonymousreply 73Last Friday at 12:18 AM

I thought High School Confidential by Rough Trade was sung by a guy.

by Anonymousreply 1Last Monday at 2:44 PM

Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses

by Anonymousreply 2Last Monday at 2:44 PM

I thought Nick Gilder was female in both looks and voice.

by Anonymousreply 3Last Monday at 2:44 PM

I thought Hanson's MMMBop was sung by a girl for about a month.

by Anonymousreply 4Last Monday at 2:45 PM

"Jackie Blue"

by Anonymousreply 5Last Monday at 2:48 PM

I love this song. It came out when I was a kid and I thought the main part was a guy at first but learned after seeing them on TV it was a woman.

by Anonymousreply 6Last Monday at 2:48 PM

When I heard the Blow Monkeys’ cover of “You Don’t Own Me” I assumed the lead singer was a woman with a really, really deep voice.

by Anonymousreply 7Last Monday at 2:50 PM

Am I the only one who thinks the drummer at R5 is kind of hot?

by Anonymousreply 8Last Monday at 2:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 10Last Monday at 2:57 PM

I thought “I Try” by Macy Gray was a colossal joke performed as a prank.

by Anonymousreply 11Last Monday at 2:58 PM

When I first saw a pic of Jon Bon Jovi I thought he WAS a woman. He doesn't sound like one but he sure looked like one (facially, anyway) in his younger years.

by Anonymousreply 12Last Monday at 2:59 PM

Journey - "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'"

by Anonymousreply 13Last Monday at 2:59 PM

Jermaine Stewart, We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off. I was also confused by Neil Sedaka's Laughter in the Rain.

by Anonymousreply 14Last Monday at 3:00 PM

Ain't No Reason by Brett Dennen

Never dawned on me that it could be a guy and there are plenty of women named Brett too

Beautiful song though.

by Anonymousreply 15Last Monday at 3:01 PM

Anything by Yaz-era Alison Moyet

by Anonymousreply 16Last Monday at 3:04 PM

This oldie goldie is great! "Brean 'n' Butter"

by Anonymousreply 17Last Monday at 3:08 PM

If you listen to the lyrics of "Ain't No Reason" you could see it as a metaphor for finally being able to come out of the closet "love will set me free, I know."

by Anonymousreply 18Last Monday at 3:09 PM

I'm posting an obscure fact about Victor Hugo. 10 points for me!

by Anonymousreply 19Last Monday at 3:11 PM

I'm R19 and I'm an idiot--wrong thread.

Watching TV and DLing don't mix lol

by Anonymousreply 20Last Monday at 3:11 PM

This thread is transphobic! It assumes gender is binary.

by Anonymousreply 21Last Monday at 3:12 PM

Somebody’s Knockin’ by Terri Gibbs

by Anonymousreply 22Last Monday at 3:25 PM

Hot and Cold by Katy Perry

One of the Alabama Shakes songs. Thought it was a man singing

by Anonymousreply 24Last Monday at 3:40 PM

Air Supply - I thought it was a male and female duo.

Someone already beat me with Yaz

by Anonymousreply 25Last Monday at 3:41 PM

I can't remember which Fleetwood Mac song I first heard Christine McVie sing on, but I was shocked to learn she wasn't a guy singing.

by Anonymousreply 26Last Monday at 3:42 PM

Some great songs on here ! Somebodys Knockin will forever remind me of a tempestuous nightmare relationship I had with a stunning blue eyed alabama man .He was indeed the devil with blue eyes and blue jeans ! I danced to jermaine a 1000 times but only realized a few years ago he wasnt a she! I loved this song for years before I realized it was a man singing.

by Anonymousreply 27Last Monday at 4:06 PM

Me too, R24.

by Anonymousreply 28Last Monday at 4:11 PM

I always thought the guy from Rush was a woman. I can't remember which songs specifically, but twice I heard them on the radio and thought the singer was female.

by Anonymousreply 29Last Monday at 4:14 PM
by Anonymousreply 30Last Monday at 4:16 PM

The Stylistics “You Make Me Feel Brand New”. I was 7 or 8.

by Anonymousreply 31Last Monday at 4:21 PM

First time I heard "feel it still" by Portugal the man I thought it was a woman.

Bit of a side drift, but as a kid was convinced Rick Astley was black until I saw one of his videos.

by Anonymousreply 32Last Monday at 4:23 PM

Cigarettes After Sex

by Anonymousreply 33Last Monday at 4:31 PM

The "female" voice in this song is apparently Jack White.

by Anonymousreply 34Last Monday at 4:35 PM

Wayne Newton looked like a LESBIAN back then.

by Anonymousreply 35Last Monday at 4:39 PM

The theme song to ARTHUR (1981)

by Anonymousreply 36Last Monday at 4:40 PM

For years I thought a young black woman was singing this.

by Anonymousreply 37Last Monday at 4:40 PM

R6 - I was thinking more, menopausal.

by Anonymousreply 38Last Monday at 4:45 PM

Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"

by Anonymousreply 39Last Monday at 4:46 PM

R6 - I got that a lot. Why do you think I showed my Bush in the I’m So Excited video?

by Anonymousreply 40Last Monday at 4:47 PM

I still don't know if the lead singer of Silversun pickups is male or female. I suppose I could google .

by Anonymousreply 41Last Monday at 4:48 PM

[Bit of a side drift, but as a kid was convinced Rick Astley was black until I saw one of his videos.]

I thought the same of Dusty Springfield.

by Anonymousreply 42Last Monday at 4:50 PM

I thought The Fifth Dimension was white.

by Anonymousreply 43Last Monday at 4:51 PM

Portugal Man's "Feel it Still" - I was blown away when I found out it was a man singing.

by Anonymousreply 44Last Monday at 4:51 PM

R22 Me, too! And when I first saw her on TV, I thought it was a blind transgender person!

by Anonymousreply 45Last Monday at 4:52 PM

R43 They’re not?

by Anonymousreply 46Last Monday at 4:53 PM

I thought this was the voice of a man.

by Anonymousreply 47Last Monday at 5:48 PM

Believe by Cher. There was so much autotune it sounded like an androgynous robot.

by Anonymousreply 48Last Monday at 10:03 PM

Like R9, I thought "Fast Car" was sung by a guy. The fact that Tracy Chapman has one of those gender ambiguous names didn't help clear it up any.

by Anonymousreply 49Last Monday at 10:14 PM

Nothing beats Jimmy Scott.

by Anonymousreply 50Last Monday at 10:22 PM

My mother used to play a Christmas album, and I still don't know if the singer was a lady with a weird voice, or a little boy with a weird voice. This was in the late 60s/early 70s.

by Anonymousreply 51Last Monday at 10:55 PM

I thought Marvin Gaye was a lady when I first heard this song:

by Anonymousreply 52Last Monday at 11:30 PM

Didn’t Marvin Gaye sing that classic “Let’s Get It On (Like Dogs in the Road, Pt.1)” ?

by Anonymousreply 53Last Monday at 11:33 PM

“Kiss” by Prince is VERY reminiscent of Got To Give It Up, down to the femme falsetto.

by Anonymousreply 54Last Monday at 11:42 PM

Don't make fun of me but when I was young I thought this was sung by a young boy.

by Anonymousreply 55Last Monday at 11:51 PM

Young boys do tend to sound like girls though.

by Anonymousreply 56Last Tuesday at 12:00 AM

Todd Rundgen singing "I Saw the Light".

I thought it was Carole King.

by Anonymousreply 57Last Tuesday at 12:01 AM

R56, that reminds of another: Quindon Tarver on the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 58Last Tuesday at 12:06 AM

I solved my own mystery. It was A Brenda Lee Christmas.

by Anonymousreply 59Last Tuesday at 12:14 AM

Why do fools fall in love?

by Anonymousreply 60Last Tuesday at 9:15 AM

"Somebody's Knockin'"

by Anonymousreply 61Last Tuesday at 12:12 PM

Cher's voice was so deep on her debut single, the public thought she was a guy.

by Anonymousreply 62Last Tuesday at 12:19 PM

McAlmont and Butler - Yes

by Anonymousreply 63Last Tuesday at 12:33 PM

R5 Steve Cash was purdy! That's a good song. When they wrote it they realized it was for a woman to sing and had to change it a bit for a man to sing. They weren't gender benders, it was the 70s. Steve Cash's face looks completely contemporary, though. Could run into him in any hipster town today.

by Anonymousreply 64Last Tuesday at 4:09 PM

"You Are Everything"

I was 12 when this came out. I thought the singer was a female.

by Anonymousreply 65Last Tuesday at 4:13 PM

R30 I remember hearing him sing Danke Schoen on the radio in my Dad's car when that song came out. My father swore it was a girl.

by Anonymousreply 66Last Tuesday at 4:13 PM

More trivia: Todd Rundgren knew Liv Tyler wasn't his daughter but signed the paternity papers and supported Liv until she was grown up.

by Anonymousreply 67Last Tuesday at 4:16 PM

OP, what’s a g*nd*r?

by Anonymousreply 68Last Tuesday at 4:21 PM

I honestly did not know that this was a woman singing until last year!

by Anonymousreply 69Last Tuesday at 4:30 PM

r69, I didn't know that was a woman singing until now!

by Anonymousreply 70Last Tuesday at 5:21 PM

Some of you don't have much of an ear.

by Anonymousreply 71Last Tuesday at 5:33 PM

I'm another one who took years to realise Tracy Chapman was a woman.

by Anonymousreply 72Last Friday at 12:09 AM

R50 Bingo!
