That was stashed away long before this fire, though. It's mostly the architecture that people are mourning, I think, not some kitschy Catholic baubles.

Great that they got the artwork out! And now for the restoration of the cathedral...…….

I'm most worried about the windows
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 15, 2019 8:25 PM |
The most irreplaceable works of art are the huge stunning thousand year old stained glass windows and those, I'm afraid, are toast.

OP Art? Those are trinkets, the building is the art
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 15, 2019 8:32 PM |
It didn't look like all the rose windows were blown out to me. Some.
Also, the cathedral doesn't even need that "main spire".
They were dousing the towers with water through the hole thing, and they are intact, no?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 15, 2019 8:32 PM |
I just hope the walls hold. The roof and ceiling were part of the support system for the walls.

Mon Dieu!

r7. Where you did find this?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 15, 2019 8:47 PM |
The water constantly spraying on that and its not out? What the hell went wrong there?
I hope Versailles has something better in place to put out an attic fire.

R10 it's from the other thread.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 15, 2019 8:58 PM |
You could see flames in the towers and smoke was pouring out of the top of them so they're unlikely to be unscathed. Also the main structure will be weakened without the roof since the walls require the force of the roof to push against the flying buttresses.

the FAKE Crown of thorns
That could have burned. Some nun probably put that together in 1300 A.D.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 15, 2019 9:09 PM |
A fake from 1300 AD is a historic relic in itself by 2019 AD, R15.

I thought the fire was a raging inferno? How did they get the works of art out? I’m thinking they were already out for the renovation and stored elsewhere.

I used to go for the veille de Noël in the 80's, before Paris was completely overrun with massive tourism 12 months of the year. It was magical.

All of the windows are gone, lead melts at a low temp.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 15, 2019 9:16 PM |
I find this very hard to believe.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 15, 2019 9:17 PM |
Well, this is a ray of sunshine. Thank God. I’ve been depressed about this. It’s a horrific disaster that will still take 20 years or more to rebuild, but at least this!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 15, 2019 9:52 PM |
OP, What works of art are there? Do you mean relics?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 16, 2019 3:17 AM |
I do too R20. It’s clear the damage is really being underplayed.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 16, 2019 3:20 AM |
I guess I take that back, the damage really doesn’t look that bad. It looks like just the roof suffered.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 16, 2019 2:06 PM |
Macron says it will be rebuilt within 5 years. Hope he can get it done.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 16, 2019 9:18 PM |
What’s the final work on the stained glass?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 16, 2019 9:22 PM |
*word?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 16, 2019 9:22 PM |
Only five years? Sagrada Familia isn't slated for completion until '26.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 16, 2019 9:24 PM |
Sagrada Familia is not an important church.
