Applauded, But Wrong
List actors who were well regarded in roles they were wrong for.
Vivian Leigh in Gone with the Wind: Too pretty. In the book, Scarlett is not beautiful.
Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanies: Too old. And too prissy.
Mae West in everything: Too old and dumpy to be the girl every man wanted.

Liza Minnelli in Cabaret. Sally Bowles is supposed to be a mediocre talent who can't sing.

I've heard that Vivian Leigh's southern accent was not good (in "Gone with the Wind"). My ear for that is not good, so I can't tell.
