Do you remember actress Barbara Steele?

Early in her career at a young age she became known as the Horror Scream Queen, appearing in such gothic thrillers as Black Sunday, The Pit And The Pendulum, The Horrible Dr. Hichcock, Castle Of Blood, and The She Beast. She appeared in other movies as well but they were overshadowed by her horror genre.

Born in England on December 29, 1937. Now 81 years old.

Her first big horror movie, Black Sunday.

She thought that all of her films were trash for the longest time but seems to have come around as of late.

Dan Curtis was fucking her for a while, long before the Dark Shadows reboot in the 90s.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 1404/14/2019

Love Babs Steele

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 2004/14/2019

She was also in Fellini's 8 1/2. Met her a few years ago at the Chiller Show in Jersey. Very sweet.

You queens wanna talk about Black Sunday and not one mention of the luscious John Richardson?

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 2304/14/2019

She shagged the gorgeous Rik Battaglia in Nightmare Castle

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 2404/14/2019

I remember Barbara Steele from David Cronenberg's horror movie "Shivers" (1975).

In this scene, a parasite comes up through the drain, into the bathtub, and kills her.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 2504/14/2019

She was a darkly beautiful Anglo-Irish actress of the 60's.

Barbara Steele with the cast members of the Dark Shadows revival series.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 2904/14/2019

I always thought she was stunning. She did a little indie movie a few years ago called The Butterfly Room with a lot of other scream queens like Heather Langenkamp and P.J. Soles. The movie itself is nothing special, but she was great in it. She still looks excellent.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 3004/14/2019

She was in that weird movie a couple years ago "Dark River".

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 3504/14/2019

I fucking hated Black Sunday. One of the most overrated horror films of all time.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 3604/14/2019

Well congrats on her still being alive.

I only saw Pit and the Pendulum last October.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 3704/14/2019

A more tranquil moment from The Pit And The Pendulum.

Barbara Steele and Vincent Price.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 3804/15/2019

Fun fact: As a kid, Tim Burton idolized her. You can see her in all of his casting and dating/marriage choices:

Winona Ryder Lena Gieseke (wife) Lisa Marie Smith (wife) Eva Green Geena Davis Helena Bonham-Carter (wife) Christina Ricci

She actually wanted to be known that she worked with Fellini, and not the schlocky Bava. She's a fascinating woman, well cultured with a very wicked sense of humor.

I quite love her as The Widow with DL's fave Mads Mikkelsen:

I think the whipping scene is from "Young Torless".

I have a friend who knows her well and says she's hysterically funny. Very classy in appearance, but bawdy as hell in personality.

Barbara Steele and her lover chained up by her angry husband in another horror flick, Nightmare Castle.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 4404/15/2019

Surprise!

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 4504/15/2019

I actually recall watching Pit and the Pendulum as a small child and when it was over asking my mother what was an adulteress. The way she so quickly told me she didn't know and to never mind made it clear I had somehow sad a bad word and to immediately drop the subject.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 4604/15/2019

She was very seXy. Her onetime husband was working on the screenplay for THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY ? 50 years ago & originally wanted her to play the role that Susannah York eventually did.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 4704/15/2019

Gorgeous when young, but now has a kind of a Jackie Stallone thing going on.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 4804/16/2019

Steele was a striking presence on film but I don't know that she was really much of an actress. Hard to say for sure given the most of the crap she did. The only watchable horror films she did were BLACK SUNDAY and PIT AND THE PENDULUM.

She's cool in 8 1/2, but it's not one of the major roles. She's dubbed in German in YOUNG TORLESS (and the whipping scene posted above is not from that film).

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 4904/16/2019

She had a very small, uncredited role in the 1959 British film SAPPHIRE, a mystery that hinges on racial hatred. Steele has a quick scene in a cafe playing one of the title character's friends.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 5004/16/2019

R49 Barbara Steele's acting in the Dark Shadows revival series was excellent - restrained but letter perfect. She was one of the best things about the series and really stood out.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 5104/16/2019

As a young actress she had a guest-starring role on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, co-starring with Joel Crothers (of Dark Shadows) and a young Barbara Harris

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 5204/17/2019

I remember her from the 1979 slasher film "Silent Scream". She played a crazy bitch very believably.

The movie also starred Yvonne De Carlo.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 5304/17/2019

Barbara Steele about to participate in a séance.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 5404/17/2019

r54, what is that from?

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 5504/17/2019

R55, not R54, but that's from Dark Shadows, 1990-91.

It was a mostly faithful adaptation of the original; the biggest change was a merge of Victoria and Maggie; Maggie was a supporting character who did not resemble Josette DuPres; that was Victoria; so when Victoria went into the past - 1795 - she encountered her lookalike.

I had mixed feelings on Steele. Grayson Hall is a tough act to follow. But she was good. Quite good.

I was in a coffee shop on Wilshire in LA within the last few years and I swear Barbara Steele was sitting there a few tables over. We smiled at each other. I wish I'd said something.

81. Cripes. We're all going to die, aren't we?

r53 and r57, I haven't seen Silent Scream in years. It was a pretty good slasher film. Yvonne DeCarlo played Barbara Steele's mother.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 58Last Thursday at 6:47 PM

If Barbara Steele is still alive and working how in the hell has Tim Burton not convinced her to act in something for him? The Eva Green connection is STRONG

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 59Last Thursday at 7:57 PM

Forrest J. Ackerman introduced me to Barbara Steele in 1960. (...in his magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland)

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 60Last Thursday at 8:31 PM

I fucking loved the Dark Shadows reboot. And she was very good in it.

A bare chested hunk who appears out of nowhere in Steele's "Castle Of Blood".

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 66Last Sunday at 6:55 PM

Those big eyes.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 67Last Sunday at 6:59 PM

She does seem like a natural fit for a Tim Burton movie. Would be nice of him to give her a ring and give her a fucking role.

by Photo from The Pit And The Pendulum.reply 68Last Sunday at 9:13 PM

I know that she was offered a cameo with the other DS alums for the Dark Shadows movie, but either it wasn't big enough for her, or she had a conflicting job.
