From what I gather, the Hussle fellow was able to cure cancer, give all of his wealth to the poor little childrens of the ghetto, and promote World Peace. They are thinking of renaming the city of Compton "Husslewood." Oh, what a loss!
Other than that, I never heard of him. He owned a clothing store, but I think he was also a rappist.

Never heard of him until he was shot to death outside his clothing store in South LA. Since then he has been in the media throughout the day every day. Apparently he is a rap "star" who was a Crips gang member who reformed his ways? I have no idea. Total overkill with the media coverage. And the most ridiculous "name" I've ever heard.

This could be a reminder of the cultural divides in the United States. I read that Obama sent condolences, which to my knowledge he didn't do for XXXTentacion, so Nipsey Hussle must have been known for community philanthropy and good works. I didn't know about him until the news said he'd been shot, but I'm middle-aged, white and not American.

He was apparently very popular in the urban and black community, was well-known in LA and Central/South Central LA for philanthropy and community work for several years, hence the respect and large funeral. He also - from my limited knowledge - had a homophobic and openly misogynistic attitude in presentation and lyrics, although to be fair that's not uncommon (still) in the rap community.
I am also white/suburban so take my op with a grain of salt.

Chris Darden represents the killer, Eric Holder. Darden is the former LA District Attorney who unsuccessfully tried the O.J. Simpson murder case.
Nipsey's fans are wondering who is paying for Darden's very hefty legal bills.
Looking back at the surveillance video of Nipsey's murder, it's clear that the killer wanted to make sure the rapper was dead. It was overkill.
Exactly what you would expect to see in a murder-for-hire hit.

I had never heard of him until the media coverage following his assassination. He, seemingly, though, had a somewhat moderate if not blazing career. He was successful enough, at least, to move out of his ghetto neighborhood and into a safer, gated community, but chose to stay and help the are he grew up in. That, I think, is why so much is being made of his being killed. It shows the danger of rap artists staying in their old 'hood for either sentimental or street cred reasons. At some point, you are from but not of the place you grew up. It is unfortunate that he was trying to help people and invested in his neighborhood, but that is why he is getting so much coverage. The death of a rap star who had retained his gangster ways wouldn't be lauded the way Nipsey is.
And, by the way, Childish Gambino is a name that Glover got when playing one of those stupid "name generators." He liked it, and it stuck.

He is the only significant rap artist to come out of the West Coast since the Death Row days of Snoop, 2Pac, Dr Dre, and NWA in the 1990s. West Coast rap lost favor to other regions (particularly Atlanta and Southern rap/trap) and significantly declined since the 90s due its reputation for being too gang oriented and violent. Don't forget two of rap's heroes died while on the West Coast-Biggie Smalls and 2Pac Shakur died in Vegas. Both killed by LA gang members. LA became a place most rappers tried to avoid due to the gang politics. Even Cardi B had to walk back her Bloods talk due to death threats in LA
Nipsey was trying to starting a revival of West Coast rap and LA's reputation this time by producing rap songs with a more conscious twist. That's why people are so affected because he was a pacifist trying to bring change to rap and South Central L.A. through activism and rap lyrics.
He was promoting gang unity and peace. He had a meeting with the LAPD the day after he died to discuss reconciliation between Bloods and Crips. Some conspiracy theorists believe the LAPD sent the shooter because they don't want gang unity.
Much of this gang shit starts in the prisons. California has a problem with overcrowded prisons.
He was known for his philanthropy more than any hit songs-he was more of an underground rapper

by Anonymous | reply 92 | April 12, 2019 2:47 AM |
Frankly, the live coverage is probably happening because the news people are hoping to get live footage of rioting. If it doesn't happen, the LA news stations can claim they were just trying to show their respect for a good man and the black community.
Sadly, the odds of rioting or attacks on police are decent, even though the police are blameless in this. By all accounts the shooting was related to gangs and gang culture, but nobody has the nerve to openly protest against the gangs. Awful as they are, the LAPD are an easier target.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 12, 2019 2:47 AM |
Nipsey Hussle also had an East African father from Eritrea, a country that split from the former Ethiopian empire of Haile Selassie. Some Rastafarians (which Snoop apparently is one of now) looked to Nipsey as some kind of Selassie or Bob Marley -type figure due to his conscious lyrics and African roots.
Over a few weeks, I think he will be forgotten and the it will be back to business as usual in South Central LA.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 12, 2019 2:49 AM |
It's weird that LA claims 2Pac as one of their own hometown heroes due to the song California Love.

R80, motive was Nipsey was planning to meet with police (LAPD) the next day to discuss gang unity. That's seen as snitching.
Some of his homies may not have liked that. The gangs make drug money through rivaling each other/turf wars. Reconciliation would hurt their bottom line. He had to be killed. In the gangs or the mob, working with police or snitching gets you killed. Of course Nipsey got his wig pushed back. Working with police can only be done if you flee like hell or get into a witness protection program

R124 Right.
Many of the celebrities who attended the funeral have admitted to never meeting the man. The way he has blown up is crazy, I read that his album only had a few thousand streams in March and 60,000 total sales. Now his music is on the charts and it’s the same bitches, hoes and money stuff as all the other rappers. He had a clothing shop with his brother and another partner, a ball cap with a dollar sign is $200!! Allegedly businesses set up with dirty money. He buried 250,000 in the backyard and dug it up damp and unusable. The treasury replaces such notes unless it’s dirty money.
It is entertaining to search his name and see all the deluded people who are saying this man was Bill Gates rich and so smart he surely had trust funds and life insurance for his kids. Some even think his chains can be sold to keep his kids in luxury forever. Lol. Rapper Jermaine Dupri said Nipsey was Jesus! Ah yes Jesus came back to Earth and left us all some words to live by “Look, I like bitches, that's lightskinned-ed With a whole a lot of ass, and get right with it Off a pill, I can probably make her like bitches Lick lick it, like a lolli till it's like liquid These hoochies always talking bout, where my dick is” AMEN

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Local civil rights activists are calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to demand the release of a man who was shot alongside slain rapper Nipsey Hussle.
Kerry Lathan was one of two men wounded during the shooting. He'd just been released after serving 20 years in prison and was reportedly arrested afterward.
Lathan is now accused of violating the terms of his parole by associating with a known gang member.
"That's a slap in the face to his family and our grieving community," said Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope. "Nipsey Hussle was a hero, a role model, a justification fighter, a successful business person and entrepreneur who gave everything he could to help people in this community. That help included trying to help his friend Lathan. We can't continue to have this cycle of criminal justice system that penalizes people who need help."
Ali said Hussle wanted to help Lathan with some clothes.

Didn’t they all show up at the funeral wearing the blue crip colors and throw up gang signs? But now Nipsey wasn’t a gang member?

When is there going to be a GoFundMe account set up, like for My Dough Burrous after her husband, Chris, got fisted to death in Glendale? It's only right that Nippy's family gets the same kind of pity benefits as other celebrities' wives, whores and childrens.

There was one set up by Reggie Bush but after a lot of backlash it was taken down. Seems his fans believe he was a multi millionaire and it was disrespectful of Reggie to emasculate him by suggesting he hadn’t provided for his kids.
