Who is your most favourite famous/well known gay?

Has to have....actually, no....I was going to say has to have been alive in your lifetime-but that's not necessary.

So it can be someone corny like Oscar Wilde.

Don't be scared of naming someone who the DL doesn't like.

by Anonymousreply 76June 23, 2019 9:53 PM

He's not really famous as such, but Tasmanian gay rights activist Rodney Croome is someone I have always looked up to. He helped turn the most backward and homophobic state of Australia into having some of the most progressive pro gay laws in the country. Tasmania was once a place gay people fled from and now it's a place where many of us flock to for holidays, sea change and retirement. Rodney Croome is a hero to me. Much respect also goes to former Justice of the High Court of Australia Michael Kirby.

[quote]Not afraid to openly have a constant male companion, Antinous

Nobody was afraid of that back in those days. Other emperors also had long-term male concubines - Domitian had Earinos, Nero and Otho both had Sporus. This was common in less aristocratic households as well.

I like Frederick the Great for a more modern reference of gay military genius, and also for his intellect, taste, and contempt for religion.

I like Glenn Greenwald. He's a bit of foot-in-mouth case but I share his politics and consider him a model of bravery. He never shies away from facing the powerful, no matter if it is serious bureaucrats like Obama or dictatorial crazy scum like Bolsonaro.

And on a less high minded note: I like my 7th English teacher who had the most beautiful ass a human being has ever possessed. Even though I'm probably more of a bottom personality-wise he's engendered in me a life long love for the male derrière. I search in vain for men with his body.

Someone who made a lasting impression on me when I read about him as a youth was an ancient Greek guy called Menestratos. The only reason we know of him is the travelogue writer Pausanias.

[bold]Pausanias, Description of Greece 9. 26. 7 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.) :[/bold] [italic]"In Thespiai (Thespiae) [in Boiotia] is a bronze image of Zeus Soter (Saviour). They say about it that when a Drakon (Dragon-Serpent) was devastating their city, the god commended that every year one of their youths, upon whom the lot fell, should be offered to the monster. Now the names of those who perished they say that they do not remember. But when the lot fell on Kleostratos (Cleostratus), his lover Menestratos (Menestratus), they say, devised a trick. He had made a bronze breastplate with a fish-hook, the point turned outward upon each of its plates. Clad in this breastplate he gave himself up, of his own free will, to the Drakon, convinced that having done so he would, though destroyed himself, proved the destroyer of the monster. This is why the Zeus has been surnamed Saviour."[/italic]

I don't know why but the self-sacrifice for his male lover touched me back then and still does, probably because it was the first time that I read an account where a male gay love story was admired and celebrated.
