How did you get your stomach flat again?
I'm not a big exercise guy because I've always had good metabolism and walk everywhere and eat rather well (salads, fish, etc). Now, it's slowing down or something because I have a gut. Not a huge one, mind you, but because I'm otherwise slim it is very noticeable. What exercises will make it go away?
I don't want to spend a shit ton on a trainer and gym membership, because I'm not interested in totally changing my body. I've read so many tips online I don't know which actually work. Everyone seems to agree that belly fat is a bitch to burn. I don't think crunches alone will do it.
Have you beaten the battle of the bulge and if so how?
(Not getting lipo either)

This doctor flattened his stomach with high intensity interval training and a minimum of home equipment. This is the exercise page of his website.

You can’t target fat areas with exercise.
Fat leaves the body gradually from your thinnest areas first, to your fattest pockets last — which is the gut and love handles in men.
But you have to be eating fewer calores than you burn every day — with or without exercise.
Exercise simply helps you burn calories.

FYI, cardio exercises, such as jogging, treadmill, elliptical or Jazzercise, are the best exercises for burning the most calories /fat.

You sure as hell can target areas for fat loss. By building muscle. Are you a bunch of frauen on this thread?

You are gravity's bitch...no matter how tone you are at 40-50 and up, the skin on your torso will start to sag creating your tummy bump at your belt line....unless you do the tuck, this is just natural *and we hates it!)

I'm in my 30s but like I said, I'm slim overall. I'm concerned working out will just make me scrawny and veiny in the arms and have no effect on my stomach. I don't want to pack on muscle, just flatten the abs.

To flatten abs you have to build muscle there. Your ab muscles are weak and flabby.

If it’s fat, you need to burn more calories than you take in, and make the calories count. If it’s not so much fat, abdominal and lower back exercises will help tone it up.

Cut the carbs. I’m a woman and it’s the ONLY thing that budged the little layer of fat on my belly (which is natural yada yada)

Try a paleo diet, OP, it's the only thing that worked for me. I've been slacking off with it lately and of course any extra pounds goes directly to my gut. I work out (cardio and weights), and it doesn't help my abs much.

Have you been tested for excess cortisol? Stress and cortisol production sometimes causes otherwise trim and thin to retain weight in the abdominal area. Additionally, so does sleep disturbances. If it's specifically visceral fat that's causing a bit of protrusion, it's the most difficult to lose no matter your size even with starvation there will be visceral. Limit or omit alcohol, eat more fiber and protein if you're not already, probiotics even if just via specific yogurts, and you don't need to be a gym rat - but spot train the area.

Stomach crunches. Try to perfect your form. Try to keep your stomach tight when you do other exercises. Not only does that help your stomach but it protects your back. You only need to lift your shoulder/upper body a few inches off the ground to work that stomach muscle. No grand movements. Maybe with your knees bent. There are variations. Just 2 and a half minutes a day. After the pain stopped from the crunches - they hurt - in about a month I looked for a different angle or whatever to mix it up to change the dynamic. Every day. I started Christmas Eve and by April my stomach was flat. One of the biggest factors in looking younger is a flat stomach.
I'll point out that I was on a diet to get from 188 to my normal eight of 110. I am a petite female. I didn't start exercising until I was about 155. I think I was worried about hurting my knees or back. The stomach crunches were just 2 and a half minutes out of the 50 minutes I did EVERY day without fail. I was conscious of holding in my stomach as much as possible during the entire 50 minute routine. I continued on WW and eventually got back down to 111 but by April(3-4 months) my stomach was flat. And it started out hanging down when I was lying on my side - eek! Granted I never had a baby so that may have made it easier.
But it is entirely doable.

Forgot to add that you do the crunches with your hands intertwined behind/holding your head with your elbows out straight. You lift your whole upper body along with the arms as one - just a few inches up and you will feel the muscle. Boy will you ever. The small of your back should still be on the floor.

FYI, you're full of SHIT! Those are among the WORST exercise modalities for burning fat! Actually exercise doesn't burn that many calories at all, we are built to survive. The best and really only effective exercise is HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).
Of course you CANNOT out train your diet. Losing fat is 80% what you eat, you don't need to do much exercise to lose weight. You might like it to get stronger and develop lean muscle which requires more calories to maintain, but losing weight is ALL about running a caloric deficit every day. Period!

Genetics plays a big part. I will be 50 this year and I've had a 32 inch waist since I was in my early 20's. I've been a runner all my life but I've noticed in the last few years adding a little weight training has also helped. Nothing crazy just free weights. I've added spin class to break up the monotony. I've leaned out quite a bit too. Good luck.
