Cannolis are 1 of the most overrated desserts EVER

There I said it. I mean yes they taste fine but why do people go crazy for them? There's not a ton of flavor. I like more complexity. Even if you add chocolate, chocolate chips, nuts or zest, it's not amazing

Yep. We'd leave the cannoli, and take the gun.

by Anonymousreply 1April 6, 2019 7:48 PM

Blame the Godfather OP.

by Anonymousreply 2April 6, 2019 7:57 PM

Macaroons by far the most overrated with cupcakes not far behind. I love a good cannoli.

by Anonymousreply 3April 6, 2019 7:57 PM

It depends on the filling. Some cannolis are made with a bland ricotta. Those are awful. NY cannolis are the best.

by Anonymousreply 4April 6, 2019 8:02 PM

Agreed. First time I tried one I was expecting a light creamy filling like whipped cream.

by Anonymousreply 5April 6, 2019 8:15 PM

For years, I celebrated my birthday with a Cannoli Cake from Ferrara's in New York City. It was a layered yellow cake with chocolate chips and pistachio nuts and soaked in rum or amaretto, with cannoli cream between the layers. It was topped with either a whipped cream frosting or a butter frosting. It was DELICIOUS, but very high in calories (surprise).

by Anonymousreply 6April 6, 2019 8:16 PM

I like 'em deep fried.

by Anonymousreply 7April 6, 2019 8:24 PM

Ferrara's is the best -- spiced marscapone filling. Yum. Veniero's comes close.

by Anonymousreply 8April 6, 2019 8:38 PM

Aw, I miss very little about New York, but Ferrara's - yummmmmm.

by Anonymousreply 9April 6, 2019 8:43 PM

I agree w/ R3. The obsession with macaroons is really odd to me.

by Anonymousreply 10April 6, 2019 8:46 PM

Are macaroons the coconut things ir the expensive pastel cookies?

by Anonymousreply 11April 6, 2019 8:47 PM

Macaroons are the coconut things. Macarons are the cookies that look like puffy Oreos.

by Anonymousreply 12April 6, 2019 8:50 PM

Oh woops - macarons are the pastel cookies (made mostly of meringue which I don't like anyway).

Macaroons are the coconut things.

my grandma made The Best Cannolis.

by Anonymousreply 14April 6, 2019 8:50 PM

I agree that cannolis are a disappointment. Here's another Data Lounge thread: "I dont' like Italian pastries."

I agree and I don't even like the outside shell. So if I'm in the mood I make the filling alone and it's very simple. It's a waste for me to buy them in Italian bakeries because I'm throwing half away.

by Anonymousreply 16April 6, 2019 8:53 PM

Cannolis are so SEXUAL!

by Anonymousreply 17April 6, 2019 9:03 PM

love to dip a crunchy cannolo in a hot foamy cappuccino.

by Anonymousreply 18April 6, 2019 9:10 PM

Turkish/Arab desserts are worse. Baklava is so sweet it's vile/headache inducing. But they traditionally drink strong coffee with no sugar to go along with the sweet so I see why it's so sugary.

Rigot pie with pineapple for Easter

Tiramisu is worse than cannolis, and I don't love cannolis either. I've been to Ferrara's and other places - they are BETTER, but they're still not a great dessert. Pannetone? Nah. Zabalone? Ick. Panna cotta? Yawn.

And don't get me started on those tasteless Italian cookies. How can Italian food be so great and then they just fuck up dessert? I guess if you have great wine, food and coffee, dessert must be a comedown to signal to stop eating.

by Anonymousreply 22April 11, 2019 9:48 PM

Very overrated

by Anonymousreply 23April 11, 2019 9:54 PM

The US versions are a sad facsimile. Cannoli are not easy to find in Italy outside of parts of the South (Sicily). They're much easier to find in the US but they're usually awful. They require the freshest ingredients to be any good.

by Anonymousreply 24April 11, 2019 10:06 PM

you can easily find cannoli everywhere in italy. we now even have shops that only make cannoli, filled on the spot.

by Anonymousreply 25April 11, 2019 11:52 PM

“Macaroons” is an an antiquated term for mixed race people. Not much used outside the South.

by Anonymousreply 26April 11, 2019 11:59 PM

Butterscotch hard candies are a competitor for the worst dessert ever.

by Anonymousreply 27April 12, 2019 12:01 AM

Hate cannoli.

Love tiramisu.

by Anonymousreply 28April 12, 2019 12:13 AM

One of the reasons I do enjoy Data Lounge is that I can anonymously post that I also find cannolis overrated. What's the big deal? Fried crunchy dough stuffed with chalky tasting cream.

I avoid cannolis, cheesecake and jello. There are many other better desserts.

by Anonymousreply 29September 22, 2019 12:47 PM

It's like fucking cheesecake in a tube!

by Anonymousreply 30September 22, 2019 12:54 PM

Obviously you've never sucked Italian cock.

by Anonymousreply 31September 22, 2019 12:55 PM

Agree, OP. I don't get it. It's fried crust filled with overly-sweetened creamy cheese. Big whoop.

by Anonymousreply 32September 22, 2019 12:56 PM

Actually I know Dee Plorable, and her common law husband’s name is Ry Twinger.

by Anonymousreply 33September 22, 2019 1:11 PM

They aren’t easy to make at home and they don’t keep. So it’s a scarcity thing. Like strawberry shortcake. I love the strawberry shortcake they have at the Cheesecake Factory (yes, I admit it). It’s not a special gourmet dessert. But I don’t often have slightly stale biscuits, fresh strawberries, ice cream, heavy cream, and a fresh cartridge lying around at home all the time. But I have tried to drag shopping partners into a Cheesecake Factory to split a shortcake.

Imagine if we didn’t have refrigeration and you could only get ice cream at a limited number of locations. It would be a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 34September 22, 2019 1:13 PM

Agree, OP. They're one of those things we're supposed to believe -like Jenn Aniston is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 35September 22, 2019 1:16 PM

Italians are not the best bakers. The Germans are. The jury is out when it comes to opera tho.

by Anonymousreply 36September 22, 2019 1:23 PM

OP, Cannoli is already plural. No "s" at the end..

by Anonymousreply 37September 22, 2019 1:29 PM
