I miss Saturday morning cartoons. Boris and Natasha were my favorite. What happened?
What were your favorite Saturday morning cartoons?

I loved Top Cat. Even then, I knew.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 6, 2019 3:44 PM |
George of the Jungle (and I still know all the words to the lead-in song)
The Jetsons
Sylvester and Tweety

I don't know when cartoons left Saturday morning. Was it when computers turned into gaming devices? Or cellphones? Or, was it before then? I miss Captain Kangaroo and Dancing Bear.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 6, 2019 3:50 PM |
[quote] I loved Top Cat. Even then, I knew.
Oh, yes! Top Cat had the sexiest voice. How could I be in lust with a cartoon cat. Oh, but I was.

Bugs.

The weird thing about my childhood is how little of it I remember. I know I got up Saturday mornings and watched cartoons. I just don’t remember what they were.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 6, 2019 3:56 PM |
As a kid in the early 90’s I loved watching Fox Saturday morning kids programming. Spider-Man, X-men, Power Rangers, Gargoyles, Bobby’s World, Life with Louie and probably many more. It was a good time to be a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 6, 2019 4:03 PM |
"Johnny Quest" (and his hunky father, Dr. Quest)
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 6, 2019 4:10 PM |
Yes, those were the days. I don't know what kids do these days. Certainly not kids things. Ah me.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 6, 2019 4:12 PM |
Jonny Quest was a baby gay’s paradise.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 6, 2019 4:14 PM |
Mine was a live action show called The Kids from C.A.P.E.R. I had a huge crush on the soulful blonde one called Doomsday played by Biff Warren. Although married to a woman, he died of AIDS in the early 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 6, 2019 4:34 PM |
Pokémon, Dora the Explorer

r14 Biff Warren? A pseudo-gay name if I ever heard one.

I really liked the Pebbles and Bam Bam show. I still call unlucky people Schleprock. I also like Josey and the Pussycats.

This is almost out of scope, but I liked "The Banana Splits." However, I liked the live-action shenanigans segments much more than the Hanna-Barbera cartoons that governed most of the episode. And I still love the theme song.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 6, 2019 4:52 PM |
I loved Super Friends. That was probably my favorite. Especially the late addition of the Wonder Twins
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 6, 2019 4:55 PM |
X-Men. I still think that carton is the definitive version of the X-Men. Anna Paquin was all wrong for Rogue who was this tall, strong, Southern belle. And Jubilee played such a central role that it made no sense she’s excluded from being a main character in the movies.

She ran away with her girlfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 6, 2019 5:04 PM |
Johnny and Higi we’re lovers.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 6, 2019 5:05 PM |
It wasn't a cartoon, but "H.R. Puf'nstuff"; I mean, come on, Witchie Poo was the template for most DLers! And Jack Wild from "Oliver!" was really cute, and there was all this talk about a magic flute -- what could be gayer?
Also couldn't wait for my "Banana Splits" membership kit (or whatever was called) arrived after sending in box-tops and whatnot from some tie-in cereal. Probably got back some crappy stuff (which my Mom eventually threw out when I was at school), but it was fun get a nice package of decoders, membership card, photos of the Splits, etc.
Other shows:
The Jetsons - still love, and the opening/theme music is classic
Perils of Penelope Pittstop - with its villainous dog laughing
Tom and Jerry - we'd get up at like 7:00 a.m. to watch
Davey and Goliath -- got up early for that too -- not into the religious bent, but otherwise kind of fun, though low-budget stop-motion animation
Loved "Rocky and Bullwinkle" - though don't recall it being on Saturday morning
Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester and Tweeter, Road Runner, Foghorn Leghorn and all the rest of Mel Blanc's voice creations - they were well-written and funny -- much better than the non-feature length Disney movies featuring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck for the most part
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 6, 2019 5:13 PM |
Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show
Garfield & Friends
Bobby’s World
Captain Planet
I also watched X-Men and Batman: The Animated Series with my older brother
Btw does anyone else remember ABC’s One Saturday Morning? I watched that block of programming, too.

Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels

by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 6, 2019 5:44 PM |
Haji of "Johnny Quest" was my exotic fantasy, like a cartoon version of Sabu. He could keep on telling turban on, as long as everything else was removed.

Pluck your magic twanger, Froggy.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 6, 2019 6:29 PM |
I liked the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" show. I didn't understand why opening themes for cartoon shows had to be altered from their first season's, which were already great. The Scooby-Doo series with the celebrity guests was fun too (Jonathan Winters! Sonny and Cher!), except I wondered how the "already dead" guests like The Three Stooges were not identified as ghosts.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 6, 2019 6:36 PM |
Now there are multiple cartoon channels on cable TV, OP, so the kiddies still watch cartoons on Saturday morning, while their parents watch This Old House or America's Test Kitchen on PBS

I blame that stupid fucking [italic]Saved by the goddamn Bell[/italic], not just because it coincided with the rise of cable TV cartoons.

I was crazy over Jonny Quest and that awesome big band jazz intro. We also liked Speed Racer, and whatever the hell the Shmoo was.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 6, 2019 8:00 PM |
I didn't realize until college that it was common for people to call a gay friend or sidekick "Haji". That made me look at Jonny Quest in a whole new light.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 6, 2019 8:11 PM |
What happened to Boris and Natasha, OP?
They're fine. They just don't have time to plot and scheme on Saturday mornings any more, because Uncle Vlad's been keeping them extra busy at their day job at the troll farm for the last couple of years!

In the 1950 and '60s:
Saturday morning:
Crusader Rabbit and sidekick Rags the Tiger
Underdog
Deputy Dawg (was that Saturday)
Howdy Doody w/Uncle Bob Smith, Clarabelle, and Farfel
Mighty Mouse
not on Saturday:
Rocky and His Friends (every weekday at 4:30 or 5:00)
The Bullwinkle Show (Sunday primetime)
the Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the night, sometime after dinner (6:30?). Yogi Bear on Monday; Quick Draw McGraw on Tuesday; Huckleberry Hound on Wednesday
The Flintstones (Friday primetime)
The Jetsons (Sunday primetime)
Top Cat (Tuesday or Wednesday primetime)

by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 7, 2019 5:42 AM |
No, r76. It the opposite of counts. It killed the Saturday morning cartoon and foisted Loser Lopez on us.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 7, 2019 5:44 AM |
The Smurfs (though watching nowadays they come off like prissy little bitches), Bugs Bunny, Superfriends, Tintin

OP and [R6], it was the Children's Television Act of 1990 that ruined Saturday mornings.
Adding to the love for...
The Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner Hour

Jonny Quest

Felix the Cat
Popeye, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and Brutus
Krazy Kat
These weren't usually on Saturday morning though.

Bugs Bunny & Road Runner. Smurfs, Shirt Tales (the crime fighting cute animals).
by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 7, 2019 8:36 PM |
DRAKE & JOSH.
It’s live-action technically, sure; but looking back I’d say the relentless slapstick violence, wacky schemes, quick-cuts and the spit-takes at nigh-impossible real-world plots render it basically a cartoon (or at least a hyperreal sitcom on Dexat rim).

Flame away but I liked that Rugrats sequel series which caught up with the original babies when they hit around 14 years old.
It was deadpan in tone compared to the OG but it worked, and the updated older character designs were lit. I loved that Lil & KImi became best girlfriends and that Dil got to have his own personality develop. Seeing Angelica in Junior High was a wild trip, too. I secretly wanted Angelica & Chuckie to date.
The only part that sucked was that the parents and the adult supporting cast rarely featured anymore, and there was too much angst from Tommy (and his dog got diabetic and old which was really depressing).

One of my favorite shows was "Lidsville" because of Charles Nelson Reilly's "Hoodoo" character. or maybe it was sexy, young Butch ("Eddie Munster") Patrick.
I bought the DVD set back when it was originally released (2005) and now it goes for a fortune on eBay.

Every weekend we went to the Cape.
Friday nights we would go to the "cottage", turn the heat on and leave to go to dinner.
If we were good, we'd get honey dipped doughnuts for Saturday morning . Dunkins'.
On Saturday morning my brother and I were up early and planted in the den.
I think this is when my parents had sex.
My first crush was Race Banon. I loved Scooby Doo. Bugs and Tom and Jerry were great.
We would get in trouble for eating Chef Boyardee ravioli cold out of the can.
