The River Wild (1994)
Mary Louise's only foray into the action film genre, directed by the late Curtis Hanson. I don't know what is it about this film but I watch it everytime it's on TV (and that happens a lot). It's such a guilty pleasure!
I just found out on IMDB that she was nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG award for it. Wow, it must have been a really weak year for female performances that year, huh? Did she get some Oscar buzz for it as well?

I loved it when annoying Benjamin Bratt got killed in the movie.

Whenever an actress turns 40 she has to play in a couple of those movies where she is psychotically lusted after by young thugs. And she gets to show her boobies.
Ater that, it's mommies and character roles.

It’s quite a riveting movie actually. Unlike anything else in M’s oeuvre.

Every performance I’ve ever given generates Oscar buzz, dear.

Entertaining piece of B grade fluff. Whilst M didn't deserve an Oscar nomination she was more deserving than a couple of the nominees. 1994 was such a weak year for actresses.

Her body was never in better shape before. Or since.
It was a fun little movie and a chance for her to do something different.

Is M’s daughter still dating David Strathairn’s son?

David Strathairn's charater in this one really got on my nerves. He was annoying as fuck and he had zero chemistry with Meryl. He almost made you root for the bad guys. The actor playing her kid was super annoying too.
But this film does contain plenty of beautiful natural scenery to admire and also one of my favorite Meryl scenes - the one where she bursts out in a fit of laughter when John C. Reilly says something stupid but then her laughing suddenly turns into crying.

OP Meryl Streep can read the phone book and get a Golden Globe nomination.'
She even got a Golden Globe nomination for She-Devil, hello?

Great action movie, Streep showing she had no problem making a "just for fun" movie. Kevin Bacon in his prime. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I'd love to see it again.

Meryl Streep will literally take any role that’s offered. No standards.

"...and also one of my favorite Meryl scenes - the one where she bursts out in a fit of laughter when John C. Reilly says something stupid but then her laughing suddenly turns into crying."
I agree--pretty great scene. It's when Bacon casually announces that Streep is going to navigate all of them through the most treacherous stretch of the rapids ... her laugh/cry is at his utterly breezy and obtuse naivete and the fact that they will all probably die - including her family - trying to get through it. Vintage Streep.

According to wikipedia Meryl almost died during the filming:
[quote] There was a scare at the end of one day of filming when Hanson asked Streep to shoot one more scene, to which she objected because of her exhaustion. However, she decided to attempt it, and weak from fatigue, was swept off the raft into the river and was in danger of drowning; she did not drown because of her personal flotation device and the river rescue team. Afterwards she said to Hanson, "In the future, when I say I can't do something, I think you should believe me," to which he agreed.

Meryl's stunt double was Kelley Kalafatich, a professional river guide. Unfortunately she became paralyzed from the waist down in 2007 due to some rare medical condition.

The River Wild was Meryl "comeback" film after a series of Flops that were panned by the critics
Defending Your Life, Death Becomes Her & The House of the Spirits
After House of the Spirits, Meryl was PISSED OFF she was passed over for the female lead in "Remains of the Day" (which went to Emma Thompson) - To add insult to injury, her good pal Mike Nichols was producing and didn't fight hard enough for her to get cast. Which led to Nichols and Streep not speaking for awhile
After that debacle, Meryl fired her agency and signed up with team of Kevin Huvane - first project he suggested to her "The River Wild" and thanks to Kevin Huvane, he guided her career back to a string of Oscar nominated and commercial hits.

I love Death Becomes Her and Defending Your Life but I always forget they flopped in the early '90s.
I haven't seen River Wild since 1994 but Meryl is great in it. And she looked beautiful.

Director Curtis Hanson played her husband in Adaptation. I wish M had been able to work with him again before he died.
A lot of famous directors have acted opposite M - Woody, Milos Forman, Sydney Pollock, David O. Russell and Hanson.

I love this film and thought Meryl did pretty damn good for her first action-thriller genre role.
r3, what do you have against Benjamin Bratt. I've been crushing on that hottie since the 80s and I think he's quite talented.

After this film, she went right onto “Bridges of Madison County” in 1995 which earned her an Oscar nomination.

Joe Mazzello is making a career comeback with his appearance in Bohemian Rhapsody.
He also wrote and directed that awful baseball movie a few years ago. Hot guys including Tyler Hoechlin and Matt Barr but unwatchable nevertheless.

Mazzello has one of the most punchable faces I've ever seen. And it's even more punchable now then it was when he was a kid.

Absolutely beautiful part of Montana that usually is ignored by Hollywood filmmakers. Which is probably fine with the people living there. My grandparents built a cabin that's up there but my cousins took it over when they passed. I'm not even sure I could find it.
I thought Meryl was really good in this movie. And Kevin Bacon was good as a nasty, menacing guy.
