They dumped the body.

I was willing to think that the McCanns might just be strange and unlucky people until I read that, in the initial days after the disappearance, they told their friends in England that the shutters to the apartment had been "smashed" by the kidnappers. Of course, nothing had happened to the shutters. There was not and never would be any evidence of a break-in. Why lie? Why did they claim from the very beginning, not that Maddie had disappeared, but that she had been "taken," and why did they tell stories about non-existent evidence?

So many people associated with this case are odd and/or creepy: the minister and his wife, the English guy and his (fourth, American) wife, Robert Murat, the Russian computer guy, etc.

Now that the whole world is discussing it via online chat- they're busted
