‘The Matrix’ Wanted Sandra Bullock as Neo Before Keanu Reeves Took the Role
[quote]Before Keanu Reeves landed the lead in “The Matrix,” the producers had such a hard time finding the right man for the role that they briefly considered a woman — and that woman was Sandra Bullock.
[quote]“We went out to so many people I don’t remember. We were getting desperate,” di Bonaventura said. “We went to Sandy Bullock and said ‘We’ll change Neo to a girl.’ [Producer] Joel Silver and I worked with Sandy on ‘Demolition Man’ and she was and continues to be a very good friend of mine. It was pretty simple. We sent her the script to see if she was interested in it. And if she was interested in it we would try to make the change.”
[quote]He added: “It just wasn’t something for her at the time. So really it didn’t go anywhere.”

Almost every version of that article shows a pic of Keanu as Neo while showing a much older version of Bullock in a gown. Reeves and Bullock are the same age.
I find most of the whining on such things tiresome, but the choice of pictures is so obviously geared toward shaping a particular opinion.
She would have looked more like this:

r1 You're right, it's weird and lazy that they didn't choose that shot, especially when Demolition Man is mentioned in the article itself.

I can't picture her in this role. She's never been great at fight scenes. I know Will Smith and Brandon Lee were also considered.

Sandy would have rocked that, though I love Keanu.

[Quote] But Brandon Lee’s dead.
The Wachowskis had been working on it long before it hit the big screen. I think it was something like 8 years.

I disagree. It's one of the few times I could easily see the person meant for the role in the role. Like I could never see Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones even though he was the first choice.

r7 I don't think he was exactly the first choice, but George Lucas did not want to work with Harrison Ford again so soon in fear of being associated with him film-wise too much; he didn't want that artistic connection Ford-Lucas-Star Wars-etc. for Indiana Jones that much, and I guess Spielberg did not want that either. And I guess they had an interest in working with an actor they had not worked with before.

She couldn’t have been any worse in the role than he was.
