One of the DC gays ignited a bit of a firestorm yesterday on local social media by publicly announcing that he wouldn't attend the annual Progressive Dinner in a few weeks because one of the participants is Michael Ahrens, the openly gay communications director of the RNC. The Dinner raises money for LGBT youth.

He's right, of course. Ahrens is actively aiding an administration and a party that is openly hostile to the LGBT community. They want to restrict our benefits at every turn, strip away and protections that Obama put in place, and are appointing judges who want to take away our rights. I say kudos. The fucking collaborators need to be shunned. As one person noted, we will happily take their money, "but showing their faces to enjoy the benefits of the institutions they're working to destroy really takes some fucking balls."

One of my best friends, his partner is a fairly well known (and sought after) hairdresser here in NYC. He has worked at one really high class, ultra discreet, and very pricey salon for about 20 years now. Over the years he has had some interesting clients, (both NYC’rs and out of towners), that would probably trigger quite a few on DL. I do remember a few years back, we were out and he was late meeting us. When he showed, he was bitching about this one client who kept him late. She was a well known socialite at the time, with known abhorrent views, (thank you Page Six). One friend asked how could he do her hair knowing who she was. Our friend the hairdresser replied he could because he had a mortgage to pay.

That’s how I’m looking at this Ivanka hairdresser. It’s a job, and posting her on his IG will probably get him a few more DC clients. Good for him, I say.

Just because you cut someone’s hair, or sell them clothes, or drive them, or any of dozens and dozens of service/retail type jobs does not make you a supporter. I'm black and I learned a lesson a long time ago that I wish I could teach gay republicans. But I think you have to learn it for yourself.

I thought if I dressed a certain way, acted a certain way, spoke away and carefully selected my friends so that I would remove any trace of stereotypical black, that white people would love me and accept me and bring me into the club. What I learned was that most of them just liked me and race had zero to do with it. But I also learned that for the ones who are really racist, that no matter how white you may act or how white you may dress, you're still an n-word.

For some reason, I know quite a few gay white republicans and they all say they vote republican for fiscal issues. But they all try their best to assimilate. They look down on flamboyant and femme gays. They look down on pride parades and other gay cultural events. And they like to say that being gay is only part of who they are. And they distance themselves from most things gay. And what they really don't understand is that the people they're sucking up to and think they're friends with call them the f-word behind their backs.
