R4, yes, highly recommended. It’s one of the best movies of the year. 99% on Rotten Tomatoes which is unheard of for this jandra. Look for it to be a contender in all categories at this year’s Oscars. Both Jordan Peele and Lipitor N’Ongo will get their second Oscar.

R10, I hope you are intentionally spelling genre as jandra. You have a future as a troll in all movie review/discussion threads. If you persistently use the incorrect spelling there's an opportunity to make heads explode across the DL landscape. You can then torture other movie fans at Rotten Tomatoes and elsewhere. Good luck!

Some of you are seriously racist assholes. YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, yet you somehow already know it's only getting good ratings bc it's black people. What an idiotic thing to say - black people, just like white people, make shitty and good movies all the time - Madea??? Horrific, critics hate it too. "I Can Do Bad All by Myself" - horrific, critics obliterated it.
Selma? Fantastic, plus critics loved it.
Soooo, it could be that *SOME* people might be looking at this objectively. I know that's hard to grasp, R25. But, you carry on with your "not racist."
Anyway, I'm looking forward to it! I will give it a view!

I’m sure this a shill post. But given that, Us did screen at SXSW and has already been reviewed by most of the big critics. Most say it’s oretty great.. I dug elements of Get Out but felt it devolved into crowd pandering schlock with some hip humor thrown in.

I really enjoyed Get Out -- enjoyed how it defied the sterotypes of Horror storytelling. That was refreshing. I also avoided reading too much about it and the storyline was clever and genuinely scary.
But at the same time it was a bit too message-laden and scoldy, and Horror should not be as politicized as that. Seeing movie after movie with the same rolled-up newspaper hitting me over the head? Nope.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 20, 2019 1:55 PM |
A hilariously written non-spoiler scene description
[quote]This film was also riddled with things that Black people would never do. When the doubles were standing outside of the beach house holding hands in a very creepy way, we would never go outside and investigate. That’s not the people that we are, we are stay inside type of people. The way he went outside and very properly and polite asking what they want was not it. Then when they continued to stand there and not move and he went back into the house to call the cops and then get a bat to go back outside. But when he went back outside which is way out of the norm for Black people he was still very proper and polite. You do not bring a bat to a gun/knife and in this case a scissor fight. Fast forward to when the doubles had entered the house, why did everyone but the husband not realize that they were doubles of them. He kept thinking they wanted his money.

I saw ‘Get Out’ and I was shocked it won an Oscar. It wasn’t bad but definitely not Oscar caliber. Sadly, I think the Oscars were pandering to a certain demographic and that’s why Peele won. There’s no way, especially with the ‘comedic’ side kick character.

Get Out was wonderful. As someone else said, it was like a race related, actual GOOD remake of The Stepford Wives that we deserved back in '04. However, I do think the Oscar nomination was a bit much. It's the Academy's desperate attempt to seem hip and get young people to tune in.
I think Peele is an excellent filmmaker and has a bright future ahead of him if he plays his cards right. We NEED good horror films. Desperately. And so far, he's been willing to deliver.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 21, 2019 1:18 AM |
I agree R62. He makes smart movies and gets the humor and absurdity in horror like few before him have. He's doing fresh things in a long overlooked genre. I loved the shit out of "Get Out" and I'm glad he's getting a little attention. If it's not your thing you can always just, you know, not watch.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 21, 2019 1:20 AM |

Black Panther is a culturally relevant film, but not Oscar worthy or awards worthy besides maybe a People's Choice Awards. Voting for this cast at the SAG Awards was ridiculous to say the least.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 21, 2019 3:17 PM |
I found Get Out quite fun, but let's be realistic, it's a genre movie about people stealing brains, with a racial subtext. It isn't really anything more than that.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 21, 2019 4:17 PM |
Sold out
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 22, 2019 3:27 AM |
Us was alright. Nothing special. Kinda has a weird tone. It's really creepy for a bit and then turns super goofy midway through, which is fun for a bit, but then it wants to be sorta serious again later and it's like "ok, we've already moved on. That's not going to happen." Pretty silly twist, too. It's a decent time at the movies, but I don't see this one having much of a shelf life. Get Out was definitely the better movie.

Is duplicitous Lupita still claiming she fell off a Nigerian turnip truck in the desert when she was discovered by an American casting director instead of the Yale-trained actress with wealthy and powerfully connected parents she was? Oh and she certainly did not deserve a gold man for 12 Years a Slave.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | March 22, 2019 12:15 PM |
I liked it. It's a bit slow and the character motivations like most horror movies don't make a whole lot of sense but there are some genuine jump scares. I'm not sure I like the reason for the horror but it ties up nicely and the twist is a bit obviously (once revealed). 8/10.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | March 22, 2019 12:29 PM |
Ok guys, for those who have actually seen the movie, could you spoil it? Do they explain how the double come from? Do they have a giant Xerox for humans? What's their motivation? What twist? I have no intention to watch it because big chicken here, but the trailer got me curious.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | March 24, 2019 7:36 AM |
R82 The trailer is much scarier than the actual movie. Some bits from the trailer were not even in it. As horror movies go, this one was more funny than scary.
And the plot twist is revealed in the last 10 seconds before the credits roll, so you'll have to watch it.

Maybe played it a little too safe & conservative in designer duds but her stylist wisely chose vibrant colors that only someone with her skin tone could pull off. Wash out anyone else but on her the colors popped. Anticipation for this big enduring screen star persona..then quiet. Does anyone know why? Are her parents super controlling?

He seems enamoured with black culture when it comes to making a film, but when choosing a wife, not so interested in black culture.

Why do you suppose that is,R141? Because if you don't ask yourself this question & answer it honestly- we will do it for you

R20 MKK has his own measure of success in comedy. Peele wisely branched out into Twilight Zone/Night Gallery territory. JP has been extremely successful when compared to MKK while braching out into a different genre.

MKK will have a great life either way. You see, NOW he's a case of winning the genetic jackpot. I believe he was adopted as an infant so his parents scored majorly when scooping him up. Double win!
This guy can never lose

Jordan is not bad looking but yeah MKK is better looking.

Peele is probably trying to amp up his black street cred by making this statement. He was raised by a single (white) mother (father is black). He talks about becoming an actor probably because of all the "code-switching" he did growing up, trying to fit in in both worlds. If his intention is really about casting only black actors in the lead, he probably should have kept it to himself. Any code-switcher worth his salt could tell you that.

Ya know what? If we bring reality in here about his white wife..guarantee you it won't be ugly.
I'm up/down for it. Ready?

MKK is the worst actor I have seen in a long while. He is amateurish in Friends From College.

yea, maybelliine and la teesha hitchcock

Friends From College didn't get cancelled?

Have always gotten white hispanic partly from him. Not the same kind of white MMK could be. MMK comes off as partly Scandinavian. Definitely nordic in origin. Has he ever alluded to his genetic backdrop?

The CBS Sunday morning show did an extended segment on him this morning, with a lot of clips from his new reboot of The Twilight Zone for Netflix. I wasn't impressed by him or the TZ clips.

Maybe R147 his foolish admittance was in defense of some criticism from the black community about him choosing a partner not of color? Naive back peddling of some sort?
He should not have to defend his choices for doing what makes him content in HIS life.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | March 31, 2019 10:14 PM |
To be more precise, the CBS morning show segment was more about The Twilight Zone and Rod Serling but Peele and clips from his TZ reboot were heavily featured. Again, I wasn't impressed.

Ooh, R124, is there a link available yet?
Race should be left out re: Horror Genre.
There are not any pure foolproof recent horror masterpieces in existence. Personal taste here, The Exorcist & Blair Witch original were beyond the pale. The latter proves budgeting isn't a disabling factor able to hinder the genius film maker. Off hand can think of films with compelling potential but cheese out in conclusion. I nominate The Ring. Rip off of the superior Japanese Ringu. Japanese horror genre excels. But HW hasn't come out with a consistent classic in ages. A new perception. People were hoping Peele could fit those big shoes but the truth is at this point in time no one has. And it is not that audiences today are jaded. The Horror Genre is in a lull on a global scale.

Can R155 cite a link which substantiates this amateurish acting ability of MKK? Perhaps he's doing his best with the script provided.

I agree w/R147. Let's factor in the majority of his fans in the majority white nation. Kind of alienating. Should have kept his bazoo shut. It hurts everyone bringing race to the forefront of any matter. Someone's gonna feel hurt. So avoid it. Keep your convictions to yourself. Imagine a quip like this insults white people and yes, HURTS them. This media conjured up racial division that has supposedly taken hold is the furthest from our actual IRL reality. In fact we've never been so mixed together in our history. Can't imagine what biracials must be feeling.
And this statement made by a biracial, no less!

I'm looking forward to Us.
I really liked Get Out. A horror film with something to say. But the universal thing is, anyone who's been the odd race out in an otherwise homogeneous social gathering will relate to it. That's the sly, fun edge of the film.

That Eddie Murphy bit is basically what a black friend said to me. There are certain things they don’t do as a rule. They have far too much common sense to deliberately put themselves in danger like white people do.

"Get Out" was one of the best films I've seen in recent memory.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | June 3, 2019 2:17 PM |
I had hopes, but I have to rate Peele's Twilight Zone as a fail. The episodes have all had promise but have devolved into moralizing preachiness or simply gone on beating us over the head with the theme. The overly careful diversity casting is also off-putting. Black Mirror is so much more current and well done.
