Cassel is ugly and always has been. "Beau laid" is a great description. His appeal - and it was pretty powerful - lay in two things:
(1) His body. Cassel is a student of capoeira and has a lean, tight, fit body with a lovely hairy chest. It's a sexy, athletic body, not a fake, pumped-up gymbot body.
(2) His virility. Cassel has such a strong masculine presence that it's a wonder the screen doesn't leach testosterone. He's exactly the type of man who would appeal to women and gay men who are drawn to masculinity like moths to a flame. That includes me, although I agree he has aged badly, or at least his face has.
