So? You can't live on $1,000 a month unless you're in a slum so it won't help anyone.
You'd need at least $2,000/month minimum for it to help. And even then it wouldn't because every business would just jack up the prices and you'd be right back where you started.
Like in IL they are raising the minimum wage to $15/hour which won't happen for five years, and in five years, the increase will be negated by inflation anyway. End result inflation with no help for anyone.

There are many people who could use an extra $1,000 a month.
In Ontario, Canada it was somewhat successful (with their small group test) but "new mothers" and teenagers were the ones who worked "less" because of the money. The good news was that there was a drop in hospital visits from work related injuries, psychiatric visits from mental illness and more people managed to graduate from school.
In Finland they only did it with 2000 unemployed people. Out of that group of 2000 they found that it made people healthier and happier but no more likely to find work than their control group which was composed of 2000 unemployed people (that didn't get payments) they kept track of. They just finished the program and they said they'll release all of their data in 2020.
However, as you mentioned, if everyone is getting it then businesses being what they are would simply inflate prices to account for it and employers may realize that all of their employees are getting that extra grand a month and then you'll have a whole set of other problems.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 18, 2019 7:11 AM |
Eliminate minimum wage, unemployment benefits, disability benefits, welfare, etc. and replace all of this with a Universal Basic Income of $XXX (pick a number). The Universal Basic Income needs to be tied to cost of living. Areas with higher costs of living receive higher Universal Basic Income. Institute a national sales tax to pay for all of this. By the way, Universal Basic Income is meant to supplement--not replace--regular income. People who don't work at some job won't be eligible to receive the monthly check (under this plan).
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 18, 2019 8:57 AM |
R61,
I like your moxy. However, I'd argue that having no minimum wage will lead employers to believe that they can pay [italic]anything[/italic] for a job due to your UBI plan which will lead to more issues.
Will children also receive a UBI? Welfare accounts for people with children.
Disabled people are limited in the jobs that they can do. If they're severely disabled then they can't work at all which means they wouldn't be getting your UBI plan or disability.
Unemployment benefits are meant to be used between jobs based upon the income you had during a certain period of time at you job. So you're saying someone who isn't employed won't receive your UBI plan but they also wouldn't be getting unemployment benefits if they're not working?
It's not really universal basic income if it's not [italic]universal.[/italic] By eliminating minimum wage, UC, disability, welfare, etc. you'd also then need to compensate for all of those grey areas. Also, I'm referring to people who use the systems like welfare and disability correctly/legally.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 18, 2019 9:36 AM |
[quote]People who don't work at some job won't be eligible to receive the monthly check (under this plan).

His type of policies could be implemented in a very small country. The USA is far too big to do anything like he wants. He'll never get enough people in Fed. government/Congress to go along with this lunacy. The young folks are all for this because too many of them think the government owes them a living just for existing. I'm a liberal democrat from the word go, but that's just ridiculous. If you're young and you want to be paid, get up, get dressed, go to work somewhere. Nobody owes you anything unless you work for it.

by Anonymous | reply 94 | March 19, 2019 4:38 AM |
The New Yorker did an article in the 90s about the SATs. At that point (maybe 1995), when the Ivies were trying to deal with the tsunami of Asians battering on the doors of their universities, the new Yorker reminded us that the SATs were devised when Jews were doing the same thing in the 40s and 50s.
The colleges' view was that they found themselves dealing with ambitious people who educated themselves beyond their intelligence, and they wanted to make sure they got truly smart, rather than socially ruthless admits. The Jews countered this new test with prep centers such as Kaplan, services the Asians use today.
In the 90s, the colleges countered the Asians and the prep services with requirements above and beyond SATs, ACTs and APs -- now kids have to join a myriad of after school activities and perform as volunteers for "worthy" causes. In 2000, I served as an alumni interviewer and was gobsmacked by all the activities my candidate presented. In the 70s, I hadn't joined a single thing and that didn't make any difference. Again, the colleges say they are not interested in those educated above their intelligence, but fear all Asian freshman classes.

There are so many things the US needs to do, student debt, infrastructure, health care, balancing the budget and begin paying down the debt, cleaning up the environment, just handing out $1000 a month to everyone would be such a waste of money. Much of it would be spent on things made in China, not the US.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 21, 2019 2:24 AM |
Those wanting to tie a UBI to some sort of mandatory service have never had to deal with people who don't want to work. The military doesn't even want a draft because they don't want to have to deal with people who don't want to be there, they are just a waste who need constant supervision.
Community service organizations would quickly feel the same, having a bunch of people who really don't want to be there or provide any worthwhile service are just a drain on the system and drive away people who really are interested in volunteering.
