I once worked at a place where she was speaking. I heard at work that Maya made the most ridiculous demands. For instance only a very small number of people were allowed to address her directly. And she's a mediocre poetess.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 16, 2019 12:05 AM |
I also remember Maya on some show, and they were trying to trash one of her books that got banned in some schools, for a rape scene that had actually happened to her as a young woman. Some bitch in the audience was going on about that, and Maya stopped to clarify that her book is "literature," instead of however the audience person was referring to it.
This also reminds me of Barbara Boxing clarifying to someone calling her "ma'am," during Senate testimony, that she's to be referred to as Senator Boxer, because it was a title she'd worked very hard for. The guy calling her ma'am was actually from the military, and had been taught to refer to all women as "ma'am," so it was actually just a misunderstanding and not disrespect. But of course Barbara got roundly slammed for it.

I have to agree with Ms. Angelou. I was raised to always refer to older people as Ms., Mrs., or Mr. But, I've been told off by people for saying that or Ma'am or Sir, because they think I am being disrespectful and bring attention to their being old, whereas really I am showing them respect, that they show by their response that they do not deserve respect.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 16, 2019 12:10 AM |
To be honest, I agree with Dr. Angelou. It's a shame that we've gotten so casual in how we address one another. I liked it better when we referred to one another by our last names. It showed respect.

Loved her autobiographies, but her poetry sucked and she was a little pompous. It would have been better to take the girl aside afterwards maybe and talk to her about how to address her - not to humiliate her in front of everyone with some narcissistic rant about how long she has lived and what this young woman owes her. It came across as really hostile and condescending.

R26 Not sure about Ethiopians, but native American black people and Caribbean ones do tend to be strict about such things. I once ran an Anger Management course and one of my students was an elderly black lady, who was sent to us because she slapped her gang banging thug grandson, at school, because he didn't refer to her as ma'am.

One thing I will always remember about Maya Angelou, is that on one of her Oprah appearances, she went on about her love of country music. She stated that she considered Hank Williams to be America's greatest poet and she evidently had a major crush on Garth Brooks. You could see some of the people in the audience were shocked.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 16, 2019 1:05 AM |
R54 And, what words would you use? Sir and ma'am, are no more than honorifics that one acquires either by position or age. You are showing respect for their position or the wisdom one acquires with age. We might all like to think that we are all equal but we are not. An intern is not equal to the CEO, a teenager is not equal to their elders. It is the same problem, I have, with children or even adult children calling their parents by their name, yes, you might now be an adult, but you are and will forever be your parent's child, so you will never be equal in the context of that relationship.
I, once, had a job where I was friends with my boss outside of work. At work I always referred to him as sir or Mr. [his name], but outside of work I called him by his first name, because at work he was my superior but outside of work we were equal.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 16, 2019 1:53 AM |
That was cunty. I appreciate her apology. The young lady seemed very gracious about it all. Maya must have been battling with that enourmous ego all her life. Clearly not an easy going person. She reminds me of a college instructor that insisted we call her Doctor. She made such a fuss if one did not address her as doctor. I was embarrassed for her. It must be an indication of self importance and insecurity all at once.

r26 As an elder gay Black man, as a kid in the 60's I can tell you that when I was a child I was instructed to address an adult by Mr., Mrs., Miss. Any Black person with home training would have told you that. Highly disrespectful to call an adult by their first name.
My mothers best friend used to tell me it was all right to call her by her first name instead of calling her Mrs. Wright. I was in my 40's by then and I just couldn't bring myself to do it because of how strict adults in the Black community were on us young folks about things like that.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 16, 2019 2:16 AM |
I too was a kid (white) in the 1960s we never dared addressing an adult by their first name. And certainly not an older woman.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 16, 2019 2:17 AM |
R60 It was the same for this white Southern kid from the 1980's and 90's. If I dared to not address an adult with Mr., Mrs., Miss. and Sir or Ma'am, I'd get a spanking with a switch. A switch that I would have to go out and cut myself.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 16, 2019 2:34 AM |
It would've been easy for her to say "I know you didn't know, but I l like to be addressed as Miss Angelou when someone is asking a question. Go ahead"
Though, really, her apology was sufficient. The apology makes it a non issue.
Frankly, I don't think Kim was the brightest bulb. She didn't know what to call her, she didn't know to be mortified by her public, televised upbraiding, she didn't know to appreciate the apology... There's a whole other thing goin' on with Kim.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 16, 2019 2:56 AM |
It showed a momentary lack of class which she realized after the fact. There was a rumor back when she came out for Farrakhan's Million Man March that they were going to expose her as a lesbian if she didn't.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 16, 2019 3:08 AM |
Everyone should be called what they want to be called. But when someone makes a big show of being offended, it says more about that person and their insecurities than it does about the person who used the incorrect name. Most times.
But again, her gracious, unqualified apology negated the whole incident. I do not think less of her for it.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 16, 2019 3:14 AM |

I think the bigger offense is the audience applauding Maya’s takedown of that poor 14 year old girl. Imagine being her in that moment. No seriously. She probably worked up the courage to ask this question only to be harangued by Ms. Angelou and then the studio audience applauds the dress down? And this girl is 14?!? At an age when you can be humiliated for far less. Just awful.

Thank you for bringing up the phrase "home training." I wish it was in wider circulation (it's been used in black American families for decades) and both the phrase and the actual thing are in need of a comeback.
I do like the "Miz" or "Mister" construction with the first name when children address adults. It's a good middle ground for kids addressing friends of the family or friends of their parents, but I know some people find it odd to be addressed as "Miz Judy" or "Mr. Steve." If you're not used to it, it can sound like Romper Room or Pee-wee's Playhouse.

Some people just get too full of themselves. Especially those who are usually sought out for advice or made success out of very little. Both of which applied to Maya Angelou. You should not assume you are like a mother, aunt, or grandmother to anyone you don't know.

I hope this doesn't come off as condescending, but for Angelou it was about respect, respect she fought for really hard. Not that many black artists had that mainstream and critical success and respect and she didn't want to let it go for one second. She wanted to be seen as an authority figure you look up to and not as someone you casually talk to addessing her with her first name, like she's your friend or maid.

Serious question:
Could Maya have pulled off Mame?

[quote] She wanted to be seen as an authority figure you look up to and not as someone you casually talk to addressing her with her first name, like she's your friend or maid.
Respect is something you earn. The moment you demand it you're just an entitled asshole, like Angelou was. Not surprisingly this is the same type of behavior everyone I've ever knew who worked with Spike Lee says about him too. Two peas in a pod.

R123 no. For that, it's necessary to have warmth. informality, friendliness, an understanding of what it means to assume familiarity, and a sense of humor.
An actress can't fake what she can't comprehend.

[quote] [R118] you got half of that right -- she definitely thought herself superior.
You do realize that I was referring to the class system, right? She was all about class, the social class hierarchy system.

She was as ugly as sin.

Other than a politician, she was subject to more different impersonations than anyone I can think of on SNL. She was imitated by David Alan Grier, Tracy Morgan, Maya Rudolph, and Kenan Thompson. Her pompousness made her into a figure of fun, when what she wanted was dignity.

Profoundly insecure people behave the way Maya did to that girl and in those WF reviews. Insulting people and going for the easy kill is a mark of insecurity.

What exactly is "Black Twitter?"
Is it one specific Twitter account, or a random sampling, or what?
The idea makes no sense.

She was an unbearably pretentious cunt. Glad she’s dead.

R131 = Ooprah

She was a very strange woman. I agree with r129's point she was very insecure, which led to her at times very bizarre pretentious behavior. But I think at some level you can understand why she was so insecure--she came from absolutely nothing, and grew up to be hailed (as an adult) as one of the wisest women alive. It might turn anyone's head.

LOL, "disagree" when it comes to "gay", but "bigot" etc. when it comes to "religion", right?

I haven't read every post in this thread, but I'm black and I will tell you that this is a huge thing in my black family and I think you will find this in many black families. You do not call an adult by their first name unless you have been given permission to do so. And even when given permission make sure your Mother knows that you have been given permission. But even then, it just make it easier to call them Miss Thelma or Miss Louise or Miss Janet or whatever. There are clear lines that you just don't cross.

R124 Agree about Maya and Spike's similarly entitled attitude. However, Lee never worked his way out of poverty - he was always a spoiled, entitled little shit who did NOT experience any of the disadvantages and racially motivated rancor depicted in his films.
He grew up in Brooklyn Heights and attended the prestigious St. Anne's School. At 40,000 a year, it ain't cheap. Because I know this as fact [bold] and [/bold] knew Lee and his sister, I have always considered him the ultimate FRAUD.

Why is this coming up five years after she died?
by Anonymous | reply 138 | March 17, 2019 1:54 AM |
r136 I also grew up with the same social rules, but they applied to children. This was a young woman. Once you are an adult, you have to earn that kind of respect from other adults, its not a given.

Im 58 and to this day I dont address people by their first names until invited to do so. Honestly, some of you all sound like trash !

This is 2019, not 1819. People are busy. First names whenever possible, please. Skip the faux genteel antebellum antiquity.
