Threads like this and the one linked are why I can't really take Beto seriously as a candidate. Half of the comments about him are directed to his looks and sex appeal. Sorry, that's not what I'm looking for in a President. I suppose Beto has a lock on the vapid vote though, for what it's worth.

He's not faking anything.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 14, 2019 5:31 AM |
You queens and Bernie Bros are the shitstains of the electorate. If you’re even part of the actual electorate. For every criticism of Beto, you should have to make it substantial and tell us who your preferred candidate is and why they’re better than Beto on a specific issue.
And you can only do that once his platform has been fully revealed.
Of course you can’t do that, so your shit-talking now is as vapid as you’ve accused him and his fans of being.
Kamala Harris will not beat him. Biden is possible but unlikely. Bernie is possible but not likely. If it comes down to Beto v Trump, Beto wins based on height, ability to speak intelligently off script, and lack of corruption and criminal behavior.
Pete B is wonderful but he’s a super-long-shot.
In the meantime, can’t we all just enjoy Beto’s bare feet? No?

Wrong political era for the "Vanity Fair" treatment. Half of American voters already think most media is unified in a conspiracy against them. This sort of thing isn't going to help him, it will probably hurt him in a general election in 2020.

R76 Some people don't get it. Just because they don't want to personally be friends with some Americans in this country, doesn't mean Beto doesn't need their votes. DLrs can write off 70% of America, culturally, when it comes to forming coastal hang-out cliques but you can't write off 70% of the country in a general election and expect to win.
The radicals who are adored by pockets of college campus "Fidel Casto Appreciation" Leagues won't just not run well in a handful of American communities, they'll outright fail in 30+ states. If Generation Z of Brooklyn wants to acquire some learning about culture that they don't already have, they should take a cross country road trip on college break.

I had a Beto sign in my front yard, as I was desperate for him to beat the Lizard Alien. No dice. Now I would rather Beto to accept a VP role. But Trump showed us anything can happen. Maybe something good can happen this time. I'm like most people, I suspect: choose whoever is left standing vs. Trump.
I'm leaning towards Klobuchar now. There will be so much to learn in the coming months that I'm sure I'll change my mind multiple times, except for ANYBODY BUT TRUMP. We need the Senate.

Fox and Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade on the Vanity Fair article: "They also point out that (Beto) has this huge library. As if it’s a big plus that he reads books.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 14, 2019 12:41 PM |
Beto would make a great life model at any art school. He would probably be a fine relationship manager in a corporate bank. He could be the top seller in any real estate company. If he opened a hair salon and did hair while wearing a tight t-shirt and jeans, women and men would be lined up down the block.
Other than being young, white, male, filthy rich and photogenic, I'm not seeing Beto's resume as particularly presidential. Any Democrat over any Rethuglican, absolutely. But the Democratic Party is big and, at least at this juncture, there seem to be better candidates for the Democrats to back.
I'm not suggesting that Beto is unable to be president, or even unsuited to it. But he's getting ahead of himself. He's inexperienced and, therefore, not yet qualified.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 14, 2019 12:44 PM |
Ok r87, is Pete Buttigieg equally unqualified?
by Anonymous | reply 88 | March 14, 2019 12:47 PM |
God spare us: another Trudeau. And the same queens who fingered themselves here into a frenzy over that hollow piece of shit are doing it all again. Some losers never learn. Not that, of course, their policies matter. Heaven forbid!
by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 14, 2019 12:52 PM |
R88, Buttigieg's educational resume is far richer than Beto's. But Beto has served three terms in the House of Representatives.
Some significant experience in the federal government is necessary to be successful in the White House. If Obama had been more seasoned in D.C. when he became President, he might not have pissed away valuable time and opprotunity in his naive pursuit of grand bargains and compromise. He was totally stonewalled by the GOP and didn't seem to even see it happen. I don't want to go through that again. Ever.
So to answer your question more specifically, I think Buttigieg is even less qualified than Beto, vis a vis 2020 Democratic Presidential candidacy.

Chris Matthews and his panel was practically swooning over Beto tonight. Like one of the panelists said, "You can teach a candidate on policy, but you can't teach charisma, and this guy has charisma."
He also said that every Democrat who's broken through in recent times has been aspirational in tone, like Bill Clinton and Obama. That's what Democrats ultimately respond to. They don't respond to attacks and negativity in the way that Republicans do.

The Beto hate on DL is very interesting. Some of you must really be worried about his candidacy, or the candidacy of your preferred politician, to be exact.

[quote]Lol [R130]. Okay. Sure. We’re terrified of this guy who’s most famous for losing to Ted Cruz.
You are constantly misframing his loss, obviously intentionally. Cruz won the race 50.9 to 48.3 percent, the closet U.S. Senate race in Texas since 1978. For comparison, Sanders's lost in the primaries by 12 percent.
You can bend the narrative all you want, the facts are not on your side. And I'm not even a Beto fan, I just see it as it is.

If you’re a decent, honest American (or a decent, honest human living anywhere in the world) there is no denying the inspiring, progressive message in this video. None of the other candidates have this. Anyone who disagrees is just in denial. Or they’re a Republican. Or a Russian troll. Or a Bernie cultist.

Beto will wilt under the pressure when the time comes to confront Trump. He couldn't even adequately that weasel Cruz. He has no ability to go for the jugular. We need a fighter, not a wimp.

Beto is actually the only candidate who has been thoroughly vetted by the worst of the GOP. Which is probably why the GOP's going nuts attacking him. The cupboard is bare. Here's Ted Cruz's campaign manager. He's the one who dug up the Melania lesbian nudies.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | March 15, 2019 5:23 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 147 | March 15, 2019 5:23 AM |
I can't believe how are falling over themselves for him. Beto couldn't even win the debates with Cruz, which is not hard to do when you're dealing with a scumbag and liar. How can we expect him to debate Trump? Beto is full of platitudes, but lacks any substance.
Oh, I'm Mr. Nice Guy, and i promise to work with Republicans. That's not going to work.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | March 15, 2019 5:26 AM |
Beto was fine in the debates and Cruz is a professional debater. Austan Goolsbee who hates Cruz's guts, was on the Princeton Debate team with Cruz. He said Cruz wins debates on technicalities - he lies continually which forces his opponent to waste time correcting the lies instead of pursuing their own argument.
Trump is 1/100th as intelligent as Cruz though every bit as big a liar.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | March 15, 2019 5:31 AM |
R149 If you're a decent debater, nobody forces you to do anything. Beto just has no real ethos, and by the way he's advocating take down all border fences and walls in a border state. Sounds like magic to me. What could stop him?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 15, 2019 5:37 AM |
Yes, R148, it is going to work. And Beto will pull out the big guns if/when necessary. No idea why you’re assuming Trump will be running again in 2020, though.
People are indeed tired of the hatefulness and dividedness of this country. This WILL BE a “change” Election, and Beto is going to be the change people are looking for.
Don’t believe me? Just watch.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | March 15, 2019 5:40 AM |
R151 Ok, I'm trying to thread the needle between "pulling out the big guns" and fighting hatefulness/ divisiveness in the US. How does that look IRL? Sounds like Beto is going scorched-earth, if you have the inside knowledge you allege. Doesn't sound like toning down division to me.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 15, 2019 5:43 AM |
EXPERIENCE?
a) Trump won the presidency with zero government experience. And even zero legit corporate experience! He always worked in a family business, hidden from shareholders and obscured from the government!
b) Beto served three terms in the U.S. House — TWO MORE THAN ABRAHAM LINCOLN, who was later elected president. (Beto also served as an El Paso city councilman; very relevant and valuable experience, as it's a U.S.-Mexico border town that also happens to be one of the safest cities in the U.S.)
Pelosi weighed in on the experience question perfectly.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | March 15, 2019 6:11 AM |
Let's face it, Pelosi has very little idea of what's going on at any moment. Beto's experience is not so much the issue --t his accomplishments and ideas are. He's very vapid. And what he doe say, for instance eliminating all borders, is ridiculous. Which means he is too.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | March 15, 2019 6:29 AM |

Nobody who wants to be taken seriously or thinks critically post feels the need to include the words 'and anybody who doesn't think so is...' by Anonymous | reply 168 | March 15, 2019 1:29 PM |
Dear r129, once upon a time there was a band called "The Dead Kennedys". They were a punk band popular during the 80's and had a song called "Kill the poor". It was satirical in nature and quite catchy with "the punks". What I was getting at in my post is that I can imagine someone pulling up a blurb/photo where Beto is wearing a DK (that's Dead Kennedys) t shirt and them pulling up lyrics to the song and taking it out of context. Idiots would eat it up due to their extremely short attention span and complete lack of individual thought and nuance, much like you. You may want to do a little research before you post an ignorant comment such as yours. And it's just called punk, not "punk culture". Now, go eat a filthy truckers musky, unwashed hole.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | March 15, 2019 3:27 PM |
For those two things alone I would never vote for him in a primary. How could he ever identify with working people or the poor. However, if he's the nominee I would vote for him even if I can't stand him. If Satan is the Democrat running I would vote for him.

I will say the same to anyone who complains about Sanders, and his hand waving and finger pointing.

Beto was a great choice to run against Ted Cruz. He is the opposite of Cruz in every respect. It was easy to cheer him on in that confined space.
But early in this Presidential campaign season, when Beto is not so strictly evaluated against a festering pustule like Ted Cruz, he looks a good deal more lightweight.

I don't really give a damn who wins the Democratic nomination. I expect whoever wins will stomp the shit out of the presumptive Rep nominee. More important to me, I want a Democratic House and Senate. And then more Supreme Court justices. I think we'll get the presidency in 2020, and if that goes well, perhaps a Senate/House majority in 2022. Supreme Court justices? A plurality of justices who aren't pro-corporate sometime in my lifetime would be nice. But I'd be a fool to believe any of this is inevitable.

R213 I doubt seriously Annie Leibovitz wanted to pay hommage to B- list actor Ronnie Raygun. Talk about digging. Beto wouldn't tell Annie if he was running or not so she said to him "look, wear the blue shirt to the cover shoot if you're running, the white shirt if you aren't." There was an article about Annie photographing him in El Paso. Annie grew up in El Paso - her dad was stationed there. And she sounded like she developed a crush on him.He made her breakfast - pancakes from scratch. If he can seduce 70 year old left-wing lesbians, he's in folks.

We already have a House majority, we need a Senate one and we can get it in 2020. The point will be to not lose either in 2022.
