Andrew Rannells
His book came out yesterday. Never really a fan of his and hadn't even really heard of him until I saw him in a play on Broadway this past summer, and he's been on my radar since. He was on Good Morning America yesterday talking about his book release, so out of curiosity I purchased it.
I'm about halfway through, but taking a break to say: his book flows well, he's entertaining and funny as hell, and he's been molested/taken advantage of sexually...like... A LOT.
Totally caught me off guard, and it's not at all the focus of the book, but all this is to say that I keep getting stunned by his genuine honesty. It's worth the read, if any of you are looking for a good book to pick up or download.

He was the best thing about "Girls."
I'm sad to hear that he was sexually assaulted / molested.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | 03/13/2019 |
He seems obnoxious and his face looks like it was made out of wax.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | 03/13/2019 |
Didn't people used to wait until they DONE something before they "wrote" an autobiography?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | 03/13/2019 |
What age was he first molested?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | 03/13/2019 |
He doesn't mention Girls at all. I skimmed the ebook for keywords.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | 03/13/2019 |
Does most of America even know who he is? It seems like everybody gets a memoir these days, no matter who they are.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | 03/13/2019 |
I adore him. One of the best talk show guests out there.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | 03/13/2019 |
he's too fat, i don't believe he was molested
by Anonymous | reply 11 | 03/13/2019 |
He does have a strange plastic looking face, but I do find him rather funny. He was great in The Boys in the Band last year.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | 03/13/2019 |
Does he talk about The New Normal and co-star Justin Bartha? I liked that show and thought they were cute as a couple
by Anonymous | reply 13 | 03/13/2019 |
Saw him in "The Boys in the Band" on Broadway. His was definitely the weakest performance.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | 03/13/2019 |
The book is only 13 dollars on IBooks so I downloaded it.
Jesus Christ! So you’re from Omaha! Get over it!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | 03/13/2019 |
I’m sorry but a priest briefly frenching you during confession does not count as molestation.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | 03/13/2019 |
He looks like an Asian woman on the cover.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | 03/13/2019 |
He’s a gay theater kid from the sticks who moved to the big city. Why is that news? Aren’t we all?
I like him but his tales of woe seem to have a humble-brag angle. Like the time he converted a straight guy— the relationship turned out to be a nightmare but don’t forget that he’s hot enough to convert a straight guy. Ugh.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | 03/13/2019 |
He's his own biggest fan.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | 03/13/2019 |
R23, the better question is why is he molesting US?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | 03/13/2019 |
Of course no mention of "Girls". That's for volume 2 of the 10-set Magnum Opus of his glorious life.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | 03/13/2019 |
So on a scale of Tim Tebow to Andy Cohen, how big of a slut was Rannells?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | 03/13/2019 |
Writing a memoir at such a young age is a sign the author realizes he's all washed up. He wanted to publish the memoir before he's entirely forgotten.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | 03/13/2019 |
Saw him on Kimmell and he said this book was from his early years to his broadway debut. Saving that for another rainy day, I presume.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | 03/13/2019 |
I wrote a memoir too so anyone can do it, guys!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | 03/13/2019 |
He has the gay equivalent to resting bitchface. Resting gayface.

Jake Shears's memoir has 34 reviews on Amazon and ranks #297,382. Hopefully, Andrew will do better.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | 03/13/2019 |
R36 I heard Shears admit on TV that his career is on the wain. He had to fly out to the Sydney Mardi Gras to get a full-house of paying customers (who actually paid to dance and take drugs).
by Anonymous | reply 37 | 03/13/2019 |
Is his career big enough that we need a memoir from him?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | 03/13/2019 |
How much detail does he use to describe the rapes?

He wasn't raped, he was fellated.

Mind you, I ordered the book. I find Andy dee-lightful. But "Republican" just because someone doesn't?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | 03/14/2019 |
The book reviews have been pretty great - it’s supposedky great insight into being a young person trying to make it into Broadway. I’ll definitely read it.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | 03/14/2019 |
He wrote a column for the Sunday NY Times' "Modern Love" page a few weeks ago. It was about how he fell for a long term bf. He's a good writer

Coward had written a number of hugely successful plays which premiered on the West End and Broadway and toured all over, was on the cover of Time, the film of his play Cavalcade won the best picture Oscar and he was a famous personality before there were TV interview shows. I don't think if your best known work is a featured role on Girls it's quite the same thing
by Anonymous | reply 67 | 03/14/2019 |
He did The Book of Mormon and that was at least a decade ago. He was a supporting actor on Girls, which had a very niche audience. Most of the public has no idea who this guy is.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | 03/14/2019 |
He was also the lead in that shortlived network TV show about a gay couple
by Anonymous | reply 69 | 03/14/2019 |
Which alone is worth two autobiographical volumes.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | 03/14/2019 |
I adore him. He's hilarious, seems to have a big heart and is so hot. He's not just nice to look at from an aesthetic angle, he radiates raw sex appeal. I'm sorry to hear he was molested and exploited. Very difficult stuff to carry.
R69 He proved to be unexpectedly talented at drama on "The New Normal". He pulls you in with his great comedic timing but it's the unexpected dramatic moments that he also delivers with perfect timing, that really hit you.

OP and R71 are the same person.
The guy can sing but he's a dime a dozen in the Broadway community. Guess the difference is most actors don't have the inclination to write such a book. Didn't realize Jake Shears book didn't get much traction. So who is going to buy this??
by Anonymous | reply 74 | 03/14/2019 |
R74 I'm not the OP, unless you meant we're both a dime a dozen in our appreciation of Rannells.
R72 Oh, I'm so glad to hear it. I like to imagine him keeping the prissy "Book of Mormon" costume on and passive-aggressively berating me between moans, while I take him.

Andrew Rannells was not a stand-out in The Boys in the Band, whoever it was above who said that every person in the cast was brilliant or whatever. There were some great performance and there were some bad ones (the redhead from Desperate Housewives was awful). That hot guy from "One Life to Live" was one of my favorites. I didn't get Zachary Quinto's performance. Jim Parsons was excellent. Matt Bomer was completely miscast.

The bitchy, superficial, fickle character that he played in GIRLS would never be friends with dumpy, plain Hannah in real life. But since Lens Dunham writes the show, the two characters were diehard besties. Bleh.

by Anonymous | reply 95 | 03/14/2019 |
For the person who keeps asking what age he was first molested at, it depends on what you would count as molested because there's multiple things he talked about- kissing, petting, actual sex, but he was a 15 /16 year old in a relationship/having sex with a 40 something year old. SOOO... pretty young.

That and his Tony for a very cool Broadway show (where's the movie?) are enough to merit a book (the revival of BITB too, for me, anyway). But not if he's going to pull a Sally Field and write about his feelings only. bullshit.

Each state has their own laws with the age. Just cause the age of consent in your state is 15 doesn’t mean you can fuck a 15 year old when you’re 40. There’s also laws in place based on age difference

Also R105, I get what you're saying but to be fair the aim of this memoir isn't to document his fabulous life and talk about how great he is, he's really honest about the shit that happened to him and how the path to success isn't as easy/clean as is it seems. The book actually ends well before what we all know him from (Girls, The Book of Mormon, TBITB, Black Monday, or etc) even happens. He essentially said that he wrote it to share with young aspiring actors what it's truly like trying to break it in the business, so that they don't get discouraged when they don't get from point A (the start) to point B (fame & success) so easily.

I just got finished reading the book. While it is certainly not Kafka, it is a very easy and enjoyable book that every boy who has dreams of making it on Broadway should read, especially the gay or naive ones. There really isn't graphic sex, so it would be appropriate for a junior or senior in hs to read. His life was not terribly tough; most Broadway kids didn't have a tough life, just one checkered with failure and disappointment. But, he knocks out some of the glamour with which kids look at the stage and theatrical careers.

Bomer only likes much older men. He always has even before his husband.
Rannells and most of the cast of tBitB, had known each other for 20 years. The entire cast was very touchy feely with each other.
However, being that Bomer's husband was doing PR for the play, he got him into the play because Ryan Murphy is his client and Bomer and Rannells are both bottoms, they were just going on as girls sometimes do. Bomer spent most of his time with Quinto, Parsons and Michael B Washington. Rannells was much closer with Carver even continuing to spend time with him outside of the play, taking him to fire island and spending holidays with him.
Either way, that clip that was posted by an actor from the show (who wouldn't have posted it if there was something going on since he knew them both decades ago), showed Bomer not even lifting his arm when Rannells went to put it around him. The two were noticeably publicly separated from one another after they finished doing promotional appearances from the show as if one told the other to back off.

Considering Doyle and he had a major relationship for a number of years as one saw from Doyle's Twitter I imagine he devotes a number of pages to Mike and their relationship.
Or does he pretend Doyle never existed in his life or played a tiny part and it was all in Mike's head? Which seems a very Rannells' thing to do.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | 03/18/2019 |
R158 maybe you didn't read any of the rest of the thread, but it was clearly pointed out that this memoir is written with the purpose of explaining how the path to success isn't always as glamorous as it seems. He felt like he achieved success once he had his broadway debut, so that's where the novel stops, he didn't even know Mike Doyle then.
"a very Rannells thing to do" lol, calm down Mary. Doyle was at one of his book signings, so clearly they're still friends and significant to each other.

Does Andy Randells mention Lens Dunham in his book? They were, afterall, at one time besties! Does he get into that script carrying fiasco on Brodway a few years ago?

What was the script carrying fiasco?
by Anonymous | reply 164 | 03/18/2019 |
r164 - Falsettos. The pages were a-lying! Actors tripping over the loose pages!

'He's a snippy flyover transplant.'
Arriviste!

New York is an island stuffed to the brim with flyover transplants. The rest of the country isn’t dumb enough to believe in native New Yorkers.

Wrong R63. There were several bad performances. Tuc Watkins fucked up a couple of his few lines the night I saw it. The show was miscast. To have Rannells playing Larry, the gorgeous guy that men were lusting over was a mistake. Should have been Bomer. It took a lot of imagination to think that Rannels was taking Tuc upstairs to fuck him.

It looks like he's been having plastic surgery since the age of 7.
He makes me think of Conrad Veidt in The Man Who Laughs.

Rannells was fine in THE BOYS IN THE BAND but miscast and awful in FALSETTOS. The only bad performance in BOYS was Charlie Carver as the Cowboy, miscast and clueless.
[quote]However, being that Bomer's husband was doing PR for the play, he got him into the play because Ryan Murphy is his client and Bomer and Rannells are both bottoms, they were just going on as girls sometimes do.
Bomer's husband was not the PR rep for THE BOYS IN THE BAND, though of course he may have helped out behind the scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | 03/19/2019 |
Andrew was great in TBITB, and he had the audience laughing constantly especially during his phone call. Honestly the only performance that stuck out in a bad way was given by Brian Hutchinson who played Alan, and at times- as much as I love him- Matt Bomer's but it was his first time in a broadway play so we'll blame it on that lol.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | 03/19/2019 |
[quote]Bomer's husband was not the PR rep for THE BOYS IN THE BAND, though of course he may have helped out behind the scenes.
IIRC he wasn't be he did help. He helped set up interviews for the cast in various outlets, was thanked specifically for setting up the Times pieces/coverage, and handled getting interviews for his husband/Matt Bomer individually (who did more than anyone despite it being his Broadway debut.) He is the one behind his entire career. Plus, he's Ryan Murphy's primary PR handler. So yes, he was definitely involved even if it just was in that capacity.
But this is a thread about Mr. Omaha / Andrew.
[quote]Read the damn book, it's been said in the thread so many times that he only goes over his primitive years trying to make it in the business. Lena is from a later part of his life.
The part of his life that the book is about is the part that would be most interesting to a general audience. I don't think there are enough people who would be interested in a book about Andrew's life now but since it was framed as a "guide" to help younger actors trying to get to the point where he was at the end of the book, it has much more of a mass appeal. It was rather smart of him and his team. It also seems like younger people really like Andrew.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | 03/19/2019 |
"It also seems like younger people really like Andrew."
I mentioned seeing Andrew Rannells at tea in Fire Island to my 20-something housemates and not one of them had heard of him.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | 03/19/2019 |
Rannells mentioned Bomer at his book signing in suburban Chicago, he said something like “Don’t fucking woo Matt Bomer.” Not sure what the context was.

I thought the whole cast of The Boys in the Band was excellent. Even Carver who got quite a few laughs the night I saw it. He just had to stand there, look cute, and act dumb. He did. Bomer was fine, too, but he really doesn't do much for most of the show except sit back and observe. DeJesus was the real scene stealer, though. The audience ate him up.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | 03/20/2019 |

R187, "Younger" people may have meant teens. A lot of theater kids think he is it thanks to Falsettos.
R189, He was being interviewed at the university. Matt's name was brought up because they had worked together and the audience woo-ed because he is hot. He said "Don't FUCKING woo Matt ......." It was a joke. He wasn't actually angry.
R190, His pics from there with Charlie are on his instagram and Charlie's. They also spent time together at the start of Christmas.

Speaking of which, I'm genuinely confused as to why Black Monday has gotten any bad reviews from critics- all of the people I know who have tuned in find it genuinely entertaining, myself included. It's such a fun and original show, and Andrew does amazing in it.

by Anonymous | reply 216 | 03/22/2019 |
No I don't but I didn't know Lauren Bacall in person either.
Rannells is known as a what can you do for me actor and every once in a while his oh so affable talk show/interview demeaner breaks and a snide/bitchy/arrogant edge breaks through. His tireless self promotion is exhausting for others. But many actors are like this. Oh I like this person so much! They seem so nice! They are acting.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | 03/22/2019 |
For someone who can't play straight to save his life, Rannells has had a pretty decent career so far.

Exactly what I assumed R217. Thank you for confirming. Reminds me of a drag queen I know (more well known than Rannells).

R217 You don't know him at all, and you're making assumptions based on nothing. If you have so much dislike for him, then go start a thread over someone you do like and dedicate your time there. But regardless of your feelings on him, his book is resonating with a lot of people, and he's experiencing steady success. Stuff like that doesn't happen for the type of people you're describing.

He's the definition of "niche." He's not really that famous.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | 03/22/2019 |
R221 Sure, but there's such thing as giving someone the benefit of the doubt. He's done nothing to you for you to say such nasty things about him, and I don't mean that in a "hey!!! Don't be such a big meanie!!" childish way- I mean that the only person your comments are reflecting poorly on are you, but by all means if you wanna come across as a bitchy queen feel free. Seems like a complete waste of time and energy to devote any time on, but like I said that's your prerogative lol.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | 03/22/2019 |
