Facebook has been down for hours!!
What will all the selfie-sharing political meme-regurgitating people do? I have a funny cat video to share, dammit!
Oh, wait. DLers are too shy/afraid/elder to have an account, or pretend to be too young and cool for it.
What do you think the problem is? Russian hackers? Elizabeth Warren's anti-monopoly ads? Zuckerberg farted?

I worked for a streaming internet company and an outage that lasted this long would be a disaster. This has nothing to do with a feature release that went wrong or anything internal. Facebook is WAYYYYY too careful for that. This is a malicious attack, even if they don't want to admit it. They may not want to comment until they can say for sure where it is coming from. But It's very strange that they have had little comment all day long and act almost as if this was planned.

someone posted on reddit :
I work for an IT security firm that supports major companies across NA.
Google had an attack overseas last night / this morning around 12:30-330am EST And now Facebook is being targeted.
They will be releasing a formal statement when their investigation is conclusive but this appears to be a eastern sourced attack on various American tech companies.
It's extremely complex, and won't get into details.
From all the support I've been giving, it seems that this is a coordinated assualt on Worldwide American infrastructure, but I don't state any governments and companies possibly responsible for this.
I would not be surprised if this leads to counter warfare.

I don't use Facebook that much, but sometimes I post when I'm on a trip or going to someplace interesting locally. Today I was on one such local trip, and I had endless problems trying to post from my phone (in California.) Couldn't post, or reply to posts, or send messages via Messenger. But I could read posts, and see what I'd posted earlier. Very frustrating. Because I was in a remote area, I originally blamed the problem on bad cell service--but when everything else was working OK, I figured out it was just FB.

R124, R123 here - the reason why I posted is not because I think that my access is important to anyone but me, but because, having a professional understanding of how global I.T. outages work, I know that the fixes are rolled out in waves. These are often based on “time zones” - being American, this may be a foreign concept to you.
As I’m currently working on the east coast of Australia I’m in roughly the same time zone as a couple of the largest metropolitan conurbations in the world - Tokyo/Yokohama in Japan population 40 million and the Pearl River delta (Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangdong and Macau) in China population 60 million.
The outage impacted us at the start of the working day here (see time zones above) so it may be interesting for those of us of working in the region and who have an understanding of the technical concepts (not you, obviously!) to see its resolution as it rolls across the globe.
Keep smiling R124!

What I find really strange is that both Google and Facebook are being so quiet about what happened. Let's be real here - this was a major attack on them. Facebook's longest outage EVER (where they likely lost millions of dollars in advertising) and they have nothing to say about it????
They must be kind of scared that it was so easy to do and it literally took them hours on end to fix.

I look forward to a weeks-long blackout. Just to see the people freak out.

I’d love it if I woke up tomorrow and there was no more FB & Insta. People should have to get their own separate websites to spew their shit and sell us crap on.

Whatever advertising we may have lost in the outage will be made up (and then some!) by the payoffs we get for harvesting user data yesterday.
Don't cry for us, suckers.

Yesterday's Russian hack of Facebook and Gmail seems to have taken down DL's search function, as well.

So Facebook has not divulged anything beyond it was not an attack - it was a server configuration error.
Do you think they owe us more than that?

So what has happened to DL?

It's been infiltrated by right-wing and Russian trolls. But that was over three years ago.

I read only 2 days ago that they were going to "out" the country of origin for every FB group. Perhaps they were so stunned by the number of hate groups based in Moscow, they just pulled their own plug before getting rid of them.
doubtful, but...

Exactly. The only thing that stops western christians from killing us again is the law. In Africa, christians are actively killing homosexual people.

Sure because all Facebook is good for is to share stupid selfies, never mind the millions of small businesses depending on the platform to survive.
