Voyage of the Damned (1976)
This film was mentioned in another thread and thought it deserved it's on. Melodrama about the voyage of the St. Louis, a Germany liner that, in 1939, carried approximately 900 Jews seeking refuge in Cuba - they were denied entry there, then denied entry in the US and Canada before turning back to Europe, where they were accepted into a variety of countries -- it's estimated that a quarter later died in the Nazi death camps.
Despite the somber topic, the film is both compelling and campy, with an all-star cast: Faye Dunaway, Oskar Werner, Max von Sydow, Lee Grant, Malcolm McDowell, Orson Welles, James Mason, Katharine Ross, Ben Gazzara, Helmut Griem, Julie Harris, Wendy Hiller, Fernando Rey, Maria Schell, and Janet Suzman. Most of them are just cameos -- if I recall correctly, Suzman's appearance is actually over before the opening credits end! Grant was nominated for Supporting Actress at the Oscars, primarily for a scene where her character suffers a breaking and starts madly cutting her hair. The great movie poster designer Richard Amsel created the initial poster, which was later much-reworked.

It was a great movie.
It would never get made today because leftist would be offended and label it pro-Israel propaganda.

I do love an Amsel poster!!

Badly directed IMO. It should've been a much better movie given the story and cast.

Could someone with the peer create an Amsel thread? Much obliged!

There is still a survivor of the St. Louis living in a retirement home in Newton, Mass. Very nice, intelligent, cultured guy, from what I'm told. He was one of the lucky few who got taken in by Britain.

1939: The St. Louis in Havana, filled with refugees, before they were turned back.

Which face on the poster above is supposed to be Katharine Ross'?

Judging from the hair alone, I think she's in the bottom corner (right).

Why wouldn't Cuba, the US or Canada accept the passengers?

It’s airing Sunday at 4 pm on JLTV, if you’re interested. I’m recording it.

R10, Ross is not in OP's poster; she is, however, in this poster, in the lower right, taking the place of Janet Suzman from OP's poster.

Trump would do the same today if Palestinians had to flee from their country because if Israeli persecution. Those who don't remember the errors of the past are doomed to repeat them, fascist America and Israel.

They should make a film about the German/Austrian Jews who fled to the Philippines, only to have to endure Japanese occupation. This would be a great vehicle for Glennie.

Glenn already endured a Japanese prisoner of war camp.

Paradise Road is a good film. G is pretty great in it. I won't spoil the ending but her slight sadness while others are celebrating at the end has always stayed with me.

Faye Dunaway looked perfectly divine in this film. In sort of a soft focused version of her CHINATOWN look.

no r25 it is a true story
Ship of Fools was fiction and set post WWII

Oh then never mind. It said on imdb that Ship of Fools is set in post war Germany. I guess they meant WW I.

The ship's manifest was.....too Jewy, although the fear of German spies was claimed.

'Ship of Fools' was black and white, cheap-looking, studio-bound and wasted the divine Vivien in a cliched role opposite ugly actors.
This latter movie had a few more interesting actors (such as Wendy and James) but was there enough time for them to properly show off their abilities?
Were they overshadowed by that Dunaway woman? Was this movie a studio-bound, lachrymose exercise to please 'a certain audience' but bore the others?

Glenn should do a remake of A Star Is Born. It would work in her favor. It worked for Gaga, Judy, and Janet — 75% of the actresses who played the role were nominated for an Oscar, so gets her back in the race. Perhaps this time, she should play the one on the slide down.
VOTD had too many people and stories in it, was like the tv series Hotel, but on a ship. Wait, LOVE BOAT without the love and happy ending.

[quote]R30 Were they overshadowed by that Dunaway woman?
Well, she shows up in her first scene boarding the ship at high noon in a long evening dress, so, kind of, Yeah.
Pauline Karl wrote something like, [italic]“Dunaway must have flipped through the lukewarm script and figured she should at least give the audience something to look at, at point descending in a black satin gown, jackboots, and a monocle.”

Ship of Fools wasn't cast with ugly actors.. Lee Marvin , Barbra Luna , Elizabeth Ashley , George Segal . Simone Signoret , and others. Also nominated for 8 Oscars. I thought it was a great film.

^. Poor Vivien was being romanced by an ugly man named Klemperer who soon afterwards was playing a slapstick German in a witless trashy TV comedy

Oskar Werner and Simone Signoret aren't ugly, at least to me -- maybe they're not gorgeous, but they have unique quality, and their performances in Ship of Fools are magnificent.

Faye asks for “Cuban music. Something fast and cheery. A Conga. Play a Conga.”
From Voyage of the Damned, 1976.

So a monacle is a costume? Or is it because its paired with the boots? Faye is TOO much in this!
Amazing how she just blows this entire cast out of the water.

I have this on one of my cable servers, but I avoid it because I wasn't even born when it was made but the stories are known of so many countries turning away Jews. So it's a glamor story about that? Kind of a holocaust disaster movie? The giddy demonizing of Faye Dunaway on this site might be warranted, But does she belong with other old gay man tropes I don't understand. Helen Larson? Caftans? Someone's pussy stinks? Some weird hatred of women is on display here. But they have to be beautiful? Seems the lowest of the low. There are some smart men who post here. I don't get it. I'm under 40 - 3. Where are the non gay monster men? YUK.
I will watch the movie but a glamor holocaust film is not really my mood. (She's before my time but I watched Murder in Texas with Farrah on YouTube and Katharine Ross is the worst actress I have seen so far in life) I do enjoy looking at Miss Dunaway. Why can't everyone reduce their feeling about her to the same?
