They don't make 'em like that anymore!

He was so handsome.

by Anonymousreply 1March 11, 2019 8:54 PM

Well he's gorgeous.

But listen. I'm a college prof and there are handsome young men of every variety, fresh and new, every year.

by Anonymousreply 2March 11, 2019 9:12 PM

And a stoner too.

Handsome men are still around but masculinity is dead.

R5 Deplorables are trying VERY hard to bring it back.

by Anonymousreply 6March 11, 2019 10:12 PM

Really R5? I doubt that. Move out of liberal elite enclaves perhaps.

by Anonymousreply 7March 11, 2019 10:12 PM

Mitchum was no deplorable.

by Anonymousreply 8March 11, 2019 10:13 PM

Mitch rode the rails with a lot of hoboes and was a powerful street fighter back before his acting days. He described himself a 'looking like a faggot's darling' with his mighty Charles Atlas physique when he finally arrived upon the Hollyweird scene and started getting bit parts in B westerns. I read this in 1975 in People Magazine and laughed my ass off! Mitch would have kicked the piss out of Trump, then kicked him for pissing........

Loved him. So sexy, great sense of humor. Very caring. He stood up for Marilyn Monroe till the day she died.

Does anybody remember The Winds of War miniseries in the 80's? I just loved it and his character carried the whole thing. Polly Bergen was his cheating wife.

by Anonymousreply 10March 11, 2019 10:44 PM

I've never seen The Winds of War but I do know it's not the first time he worked with Polly Bergen.

This is my favorite Mitchum photo from his pot arrest in 1948.

R15, on another thread someone described that movie as ahead of its time. You? I agree.

On a (shirtless) bike ride.

He had an affair with Shirley Maclaine. She adored him and said he was a very sensitive, introspective and intelligent man in spite of the macho image. That there was a whole other side to him that the public never got to see. Which sounds like a cliche but when you consider his acting roles were almost exclusively macho asshole tough guys (except he was warm and wonderful in A Holiday Affair with Janet Leigh...maybe that was more who he was really like?), the whole "sensitive poet" thing sure seems a bit "schizo." But so goes Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 19March 11, 2019 11:41 PM

He proposed to his wife Dorothy in 1940 with the words: "Stick with me, kid, and you'll be farting through silk."

He fucked around, but they were married for something like 57 years

I had the opportunity to be a stand-in on a TV movie with Robert Mitchum. We each sat on sofas arranged in an L-shape. While crew was setting up lighting etc. he quietly sang Cole Porter’s” Miss Otis Regrets She’s Unable to Lunch Today”. Only I could hear. When set-up was complete he rehearsed his line. The director asked him to try it again. He responded “Was that too Jewish?”

^Great story!

by Anonymousreply 22March 12, 2019 12:31 PM

Great actor - never tire of watching Robert Mitchum. His crazy preacher in Night of the Hunter is truely the stuff of nightmares.

by Anonymousreply 23March 12, 2019 12:38 PM

Night of the Hunter is a masterpiece. At the time it was a huge flop and Charles Laughton never directed another film. 'Marty' won Best Picture with Ernest Borgnine as Best Actor that year.

He fucked DL FAVE , Lucy ,. She wanted to get back at Desi , for the booze and broads.

by Anonymousreply 25March 12, 2019 12:53 PM

Mictchum didn't look like OP's pic once he hit his mid-30s. He appeared shirtless in many flicks, but was always sucking in his flabby gut.

by Anonymousreply 26March 12, 2019 1:21 PM

Booze ruined him.

by Anonymousreply 27March 12, 2019 7:50 PM

Gut or not, he was still sexy.

by Anonymousreply 28March 12, 2019 7:55 PM

He wasn't attractive

by Anonymousreply 29April 25, 2021 2:14 PM

Much of Mitchum's appeal came from his rather gnarly looks. Very blue-collar, unsymmetrical, "country" looking.

I liked him.

by Anonymousreply 30April 25, 2021 2:18 PM

Love him in Blood on the Moon, and The Lusty Men. The latter features DL fav Helen Lawson, totally worth the price of admission!
