Aretha Tribute on CBS

They just announced Celine and I heard some gays in my building shrieking in the background.

Who's watching?

by Anonymousreply 44March 14, 2019 7:56 PM

no thank you

by Anonymousreply 1March 11, 2019 1:46 AM

She's shrieking

by Anonymousreply 2March 11, 2019 1:47 AM

I'm watching and pretty underwhelmed so far. Is Celine Dion I'll? She does not look well.

by Anonymousreply 3March 11, 2019 1:47 AM

No singer should attempt to sing Aretha.

Ever.

by Anonymousreply 4March 11, 2019 1:48 AM

Not the right singer for A Change is Going to Come. The voice is too nasally for the sentiment.

by Anonymousreply 5March 11, 2019 1:49 AM

I thought Kelly Clarkson was great.

by Anonymousreply 6March 11, 2019 1:50 AM

didn't this already happen?

by Anonymousreply 7March 11, 2019 1:51 AM

It was recorded a few weeks ago r7 but hasn't aired until tonight

by Anonymousreply 8March 11, 2019 1:54 AM

Don't they know I'm the Motown queen?

by Anonymousreply 9March 11, 2019 1:56 AM

John Legend was fantastic.

However I agree Celine picked the wrong song.

by Anonymousreply 10March 11, 2019 1:58 AM

Meh-

by Anonymousreply 11March 11, 2019 2:01 AM

Who was that white gal in the sparkly suit?

by Anonymousreply 12March 11, 2019 2:03 AM

[quote] However I agree Celine picked the wrong song.

I pick my nose.

by Anonymousreply 13March 11, 2019 2:03 AM

Digging Rob Thomas and Fantasia. Robs hair looks better shorter.

by Anonymousreply 14March 11, 2019 2:07 AM

Digging. Yes.

by Anonymousreply 15March 11, 2019 2:08 AM

At which theater was this filmed?

by Anonymousreply 16March 11, 2019 2:20 AM

Where was it filmed?

by Anonymousreply 17March 11, 2019 2:21 AM

It was filmed at the Shrine Auditorium.

by Anonymousreply 18March 11, 2019 2:21 AM

Useless shilling for ratings using Aretha's name. She had a long and glorious funeral. Leave the Queen alone.

by Anonymousreply 19March 11, 2019 2:22 AM

Thanks r18!

by Anonymousreply 20March 11, 2019 2:36 AM

So many American Idol alumni, Fantasia, JHud, Kelly Clarkson and Ricky Miner, the orchestra leader. Why haven't they been able to fight any great talent since Idol's early glory years?

by Anonymousreply 21March 11, 2019 2:41 AM

Those sisters singing the Eurythmics song were pretty bad

Always enjoy Fanny and Miss Patti

If only Miss Tyler Perry would come out of that destructive closet.....

by Anonymousreply 23March 11, 2019 3:01 AM

[QUOTE]No singer should attempt to sing Aretha.

Agree, and this show has proves it. None of the performers comes close to her greatness.

by Anonymousreply 24March 11, 2019 3:10 AM

Did the audience love Celine? I think they did. She’s so over the top and earnest that I think black audiences don’t mind her doing Aretha. Although Kelly Clarkson (IMO) did a good job, I didn’t feel the love for her.

Maybe since Celine is Canadian she gets a pass.

And I agree that John Legend sounded good.

by Anonymousreply 25March 11, 2019 3:14 AM

Kelly Clarkson is the only white girl who can sing Aretha well. By that I mean in a way that works and is not offensive. Kelly has soul. Aretha like Kelly.

IMO if you want a someone over the top to sing Aretha, there is no other choice but Fantasia. Not Celine. And I agree Celine has looked unwell for a while now.

by Anonymousreply 26March 11, 2019 3:38 AM

Screeching sows, every last one of 'em.

by Anonymousreply 27March 11, 2019 3:41 AM

r27 All singing is now is screeching like a cat getting raped by the neighborhood Tom. Somehow, we've started to accept that "good" singing is screeching. No thanks. Yelling and being loud does not equal a good voice.

by Anonymousreply 28March 11, 2019 3:44 AM

The previews looked awful. Just show old Aretha footage for an hour. That would've been much better.

by Anonymousreply 29March 11, 2019 3:47 AM

Here. Chaka Khan sings Dr. Feelgood, one of Aretha's signature blues tunes. For Aretha....

I taped it, will watch later. I'm looking forward to seeing Jennifer Hudson sing Aretha.

by Anonymousreply 31March 11, 2019 3:56 AM

Aretha may have been respected, but she was never truly beloved, ala Dolly or Whitney or Cher. She always came off as aloof and unlikable.

by Anonymousreply 32March 11, 2019 4:49 AM

WTF? R32

by Anonymousreply 33March 11, 2019 5:59 AM

None of them were Dusty Springfield.

by Anonymousreply 34March 11, 2019 2:29 PM

I wasn't impressed.

by Anonymousreply 35March 11, 2019 4:15 PM

R32 is actually right.

by Anonymousreply 36March 13, 2019 2:17 PM

Whitney was another rare one that used to do Aretha justice at her concerts. Beautiful arrangements, understated and effortless with no screaming. This how you sing Aretha younguns.

And I like that her live version of Baby I Love You has more verve than Aretha’s laidback, country-sounding, studio version.

Celine did a nice cover of A Natural Woman a few years ago. Did she sing that?

by Anonymousreply 38March 13, 2019 2:40 PM

They should have had Darlene Love do "A Change Is Gonna Come". Some might this version too churchy and pushed vocally but it's my favorite.

Darlene Love is so underated. I miss her annual Christmas song on Letterman

by Anonymousreply 40March 13, 2019 3:14 PM

Wasn't it Fantasia that Aretha wanted to play her if they made a movie?

by Anonymousreply 41March 13, 2019 3:18 PM

Fascinating story about an Aretha impostor. She had everyone fooled!

by Anonymousreply 42March 13, 2019 3:30 PM

^ What a story.

by Anonymousreply 43March 14, 2019 1:35 PM

r41, maybe at one point but apparently before she died, Aretha picked Jennifer Hudson to play her. They announced that when they introduced Jennifer to kick off the tribute show.
