Aretha Tribute on CBS

They just announced Celine and I heard some gays in my building shrieking in the background.

Who's watching?

by Anonymousreply 4403/14/2019

no thank you

by Anonymousreply 103/10/2019

She's shrieking

by Anonymousreply 203/10/2019

I'm watching and pretty underwhelmed so far. Is Celine Dion I'll? She does not look well.

by Anonymousreply 303/10/2019

No singer should attempt to sing Aretha.

by Anonymousreply 403/10/2019

Not the right singer for A Change is Going to Come. The voice is too nasally for the sentiment.

by Anonymousreply 503/10/2019

I thought Kelly Clarkson was great.

by Anonymousreply 603/10/2019

didn't this already happen?

by Anonymousreply 703/10/2019

It was recorded a few weeks ago r7 but hasn't aired until tonight

by Anonymousreply 803/10/2019

Don't they know I'm the Motown queen?

by Anonymousreply 903/10/2019

John Legend was fantastic.

However I agree Celine picked the wrong song.

by Anonymousreply 1003/10/2019

by Anonymousreply 1103/10/2019

Who was that white gal in the sparkly suit?

by Anonymousreply 1203/10/2019

[quote] However I agree Celine picked the wrong song.

I pick my nose.

by Anonymousreply 1303/10/2019

Digging Rob Thomas and Fantasia. Robs hair looks better shorter.

by Anonymousreply 1403/10/2019

Digging. Yes.

by Anonymousreply 1503/10/2019

At which theater was this filmed?

by Anonymousreply 1603/10/2019

Where was it filmed?

by Anonymousreply 1703/10/2019

It was filmed at the Shrine Auditorium.

by Anonymousreply 1803/10/2019

Useless shilling for ratings using Aretha's name. She had a long and glorious funeral. Leave the Queen alone.

by Anonymousreply 1903/10/2019

Thanks r18!

by Anonymousreply 2003/10/2019

So many American Idol alumni, Fantasia, JHud, Kelly Clarkson and Ricky Miner, the orchestra leader. Why haven't they been able to fight any great talent since Idol's early glory years?

by Anonymousreply 2103/10/2019

You can watch it here:

Those sisters singing the Eurythmics song were pretty bad

Always enjoy Fanny and Miss Patti

If only Miss Tyler Perry would come out of that destructive closet.....

by Anonymousreply 2303/10/2019

[QUOTE]No singer should attempt to sing Aretha.

Agree, and this show has proves it. None of the performers comes close to her greatness.

by Anonymousreply 2403/10/2019

Did the audience love Celine? I think they did. She’s so over the top and earnest that I think black audiences don’t mind her doing Aretha. Although Kelly Clarkson (IMO) did a good job, I didn’t feel the love for her.

Maybe since Celine is Canadian she gets a pass.

And I agree that John Legend sounded good.

by Anonymousreply 2503/10/2019

Kelly Clarkson is the only white girl who can sing Aretha well. By that I mean in a way that works and is not offensive. Kelly has soul. Aretha like Kelly.

IMO if you want a someone over the top to sing Aretha, there is no other choice but Fantasia. Not Celine. And I agree Celine has looked unwell for a while now.

by Anonymousreply 2603/10/2019

Screeching sows, every last one of 'em.

by Anonymousreply 2703/10/2019

r27 All singing is now is screeching like a cat getting raped by the neighborhood Tom. Somehow, we've started to accept that "good" singing is screeching. No thanks. Yelling and being loud does not equal a good voice.

by Anonymousreply 2803/10/2019

The previews looked awful. Just show old Aretha footage for an hour. That would've been much better.

by Anonymousreply 2903/10/2019

Here. Chaka Khan sings Dr. Feelgood, one of Aretha's signature blues tunes. For Aretha....

by Anonymousreply 3003/10/2019

I taped it, will watch later. I'm looking forward to seeing Jennifer Hudson sing Aretha.

by Anonymousreply 3103/10/2019

Aretha may have been respected, but she was never truly beloved, ala Dolly or Whitney or Cher. She always came off as aloof and unlikable.

by Anonymousreply 3203/10/2019

WTF? R32

by Anonymousreply 3303/10/2019

None of them were Dusty Springfield.

by Anonymousreply 3403/11/2019

I wasn't impressed.

by Anonymousreply 3503/11/2019

R32 is actually right.

by Anonymousreply 3603/13/2019

Whitney was another rare one that used to do Aretha justice at her concerts. Beautiful arrangements, understated and effortless with no screaming. This how you sing Aretha younguns.

And I like that her live version of Baby I Love You has more verve than Aretha’s laidback, country-sounding, studio version.

by Anonymousreply 3703/13/2019

Celine did a nice cover of A Natural Woman a few years ago. Did she sing that?

by Anonymousreply 3803/13/2019

They should have had Darlene Love do "A Change Is Gonna Come". Some might this version too churchy and pushed vocally but it's my favorite.

Darlene Love: A Change Is Gonna Come

by Anonymousreply 3903/13/2019

Darlene Love is so underated. I miss her annual Christmas song on Letterman

by Anonymousreply 4003/13/2019

Wasn't it Fantasia that Aretha wanted to play her if they made a movie?

by Anonymousreply 4103/13/2019

Fascinating story about an Aretha impostor. She had everyone fooled!

The Counterfeit Queen of Soul

A strange and bittersweet ballad of kidnapping, stolen identity and unlikely stardom

by Anonymousreply 4203/13/2019

^ What a story.

by Anonymousreply 4303/14/2019

r41, maybe at one point but apparently before she died, Aretha picked Jennifer Hudson to play her. They announced that when they introduced Jennifer to kick off the tribute show.
