Shortbus (2006)
Speaking of John Cameron Mitchell, what do you make of "Shortbus," his 2006 film about people having sex and looking for sex, and which has actual non-simulated sex within it (including Mitchell oerforming cunnilingus on a woman); but which was filmed in as de-eroticized a way as possible?
It was heavily publicized at the time, and there was tons of excitement before it premiered here on Datalounge. But it was mostly a big fizzle. People really never talk about it anymore. Who wants to see unsexy sex?

If was an okay movie. The hype was idiotic for what it was

It was just weird and boring and very unsexy it also ruined the careers of everyone who appeared in it.

I thought it was fantastic, especially the group of scenes near the end of the film where Winter’s Love plays in the background. @ 1:23:00

I'm always surprised John Cameron Mitchell didn't do more after "Hedwig," because that was such a huge success (especially by the time of the revival, it was praised nearly as much as "Hamilton," even if it didn't get the ticket sales of "Hamilton"), but this film basically ended his career for a good long while.

I don't know if it's still the case but the last time I checked two years ago or so the actors who played the two Jamies PJ DeBoy and Paul Dawson were still a couple. They both had public Instagrams but now that I've checked one went private and the other deactivated both his Twitter and IG.
I saw it when it played the Sunset 5 in West Hollywood. I counted at least six walkouts in the first 30 minutes.
I was touched by it, though. It is unsexy sex but the sex wasn't meant to titillate but to show connection.

If it wasn't for Hedwig John Cameron Mitchell would have long ago completely disappeared from the entertainment industry. Mitchell may have had higher intentions R6 but the sex scenes came off as mechanical and awkward not to mention most of the acting, in general, was truly terrible.

It's pretty terrible. It feels like a self-conscious hipster exercise of 2006 that hipsters in 2019 would laugh at. Or find a reason to get angry with.

A piece of crap that belongs in the trash with the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy and Lars Von Trier's Nymphomania.

I thought Shortbus committed the only sin a movie can: it was boring. Not just the sex, but the characters and story too.
Can’t be bothered to see 50 Shades, but I actually like Nymphomaniac until the ending when he assaulted her. That came off as stupid and cheap.

Not OP, but now I recall seeing it in the theatre back then, and a lot of coverage, especially in the G&L press.
Until this thread, I'd honestly forgotten it even existed.

[quote] What is your point, OP?
I stated it very clearly in my first sentence, which I indeed worded as a question.
Please try to read more carefully next time.

Hedwig was unique and good - especially for its time. I think he just got lazy and indulgent after it became a big hit. No need to work - therefore he didn’t.

John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig) directed the new Scissor Sisters video for the song ‘Filthy/Gorgeous.’ The video, which is not out yet, features NY drag and burlesque stars: MURRAY HILL, THE WORLD FAMOUS *BOB*, G SPOT, MONA FOOT, SWEETIE, JEFFREY DEITCH, DIRTY MARTINI, and a handful of DAZZLE DANCERS. CHARLOTTE RAE, a/k/a Mrs. Garrett from The Facts of Life even makes a cameo appearance. (information from the Village Voice)

This and the also horrible I Want Your Love will be locked in an eternal battle for the most pretentious and dull piece of gay schlock cinema of the last two decades but in its defense at least Shortbus didn't have scary meth and bug chasing undertones.

Is this film where the guy jerks off and cums in his mouth?
Not to be confused with KEN PARK where a boy jerks off with a scarf around his neck. You see the cum-shot and everything. The actor is James Ransome from The Wire, Tangerine and that awful Prom Night remake.

Ransone is a decent enough actor and he would have probably had a more high profile acting career had he not done that jerkoff scene, most casting directors don't want to see an actor who did an actual autoerotic asphyxiation scene in a low budget indie film.

I remember the premiere at TIFF. Morgan Freeman was in attendance and walked out midway. I wonder if he had an event to attend... or he was repulsed.
The person I attended with was weirded out by the sex scenes.
I found it boring and the characters kind of insufferable. Sook-Yin Lee risked a lot for this movie and I don't think it was worth it.
I used to see PJ Deboy around Toronto. I remember him being a snarky bitch during a screening of Swept Away.

My old roommate was in this film. He ended up making a big film of his one. This film sucked and his did too. One take-way: more dialogue needs to happen with cocks in everyone's mouth.
