US citizens will need visa to visit EU in the future

(CNN) - US citizens traveling to Europe without a visa will be a thing of the past come 2021.

The European Union announced on Friday that American travelers will need a new type of visa -- a European Travel Information and Authorization System or

ETIAS -- to visit the European Schengen Area.

Currently, US citizens can travel to Europe for up to 90 days without a visa.

On the ETIAS website, the European Union said it "has recently decided to improve their security level to avoid any further problems with illegal migration and terrorism."

as it should be.

It'll all be done electronically when you buy your ticket I should imagine.

by Anonymousreply 2March 9, 2019 5:24 PM

Right, R1. But if we implemented something like that, we would be considered racist assholes.

[quote]Visa-free travelers, including US citizens, will need to request ETIAS authorization before visiting the Schengen Area. They can complete an application and pay a service fee of 7 euros (about $8) online. The authorization is valid for three years.

[quote]"Completing the online application should not take more than 10 minutes with automatic approval being given in over 95% of cases," the European Commission said in a statement.

It doesn't sound like a big deal.

When was the last time you were in Europe, R3?

For travel to Australia you require an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which costs $20 aud and linked to your passport. I nearly wasn't allowed on a plane because the airline didn't have an ETA on record but I had printed a copy and they were able to use the reference number.

I'm not sure how it improves security. I thought it was just another way to collect fees.

This is well done & overdue. We can't allow those with bad intentions to use our passports to harm others. Excellent use of vetting. Will Canadians have to submit as well? What about Mexicans? US Virgin Island residents?

The article has been updated and the original post is no longer accurate.

It's not a visa; it's just a "travel authorization" and can be completed online. It will cost 7 Euros and last for 3 years.

[quote]But if we implemented something like that, we would be considered racist assholes.

The U.S. already has a similar system in place.

OP - ETIAS is not a visa. [R3] See ESTA.

Just a way to use security as an excuse for more fees

by Anonymousreply 9March 9, 2019 5:40 PM

R3 The USA already requires a visa from certain European countries and ESTA from the rest of the European countries. I would suggest you do your research before you write something like that.

by Anonymousreply 10March 9, 2019 5:41 PM

I am hoping that it means that once the application is linked to a specific American passport, we can use the European entrance gates as approved visitors.

by Anonymousreply 11March 9, 2019 5:43 PM

R3 has never traveled more than 50 miles from his hometown.

by Anonymousreply 12March 9, 2019 6:10 PM

Has R3 ever left momma's basement?

by Anonymousreply 13March 9, 2019 6:11 PM

R3 makes an excellent point. Time these SJWs cut the crap and have our fellow citizens' backs. They need to stop with the racist bullshit as they're projecting their own issues. By claiming racism for everything under the Sun they're injecting an issue that doesn't exist among people 45+ years of age. Older generations only cared about race and they all died off. Also using race as an excuse for everything exposes their belief that people of other races are some how flawed in character as a group.

Now our police officers (who aren't that bright and educated) need to be held to a higher admittance standard. THEY are the problem. Understandable how minorities in our country would miscontrue this as feeling under threat by the general public. Compound this with our court systems manipulating jurors into letting these murdering psychopaths skate charges and we're looking at rightful mistrust among our minority brethren.

POLICE OFFICERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE DIVIDING OUR NATION

Not Joe Public. They're ruining our life experiences on every side. Stoking resentment we have not seen the likes of since the 50s. Let us all please go back to innovating and inventing.

Whether inventing technology or new styles of music (jazz, rap, hip hop) borrowed by the entire planet, please allow ourselves to focus on being great at what we do.

R3, is your first name Dee? Last name starts with P?

It’s just a way to make extra money
