David Tennant is a ridiculous ham
I just finished "Broadchurch" season 3, which was so politically correct about women's issues that it could have been written by Andrea Dworkin. (According to the series, pornography leads in a direct line to rape.)
But even more ridiculous was David Tennant's ridiculous hambone performance. Why do the British take him so seriously? He treats every role like Barty Crouch, Jr. William Shatner is a subtler actor.

ITA with you, OP.
I used to love him on Dr. Who but I didn't watch his seasons for a few years then revisited and was instantly horrified by his hammy acting.
CONSTANTLY, mugging and screeching with the eyes either poppin' or wellin' up with big, pendulous tears.
All he can do is various variations on Bertie Crouch.
And, don't get me started on Billie Piper as Rose.

I think pretty much all the actors who have played the Doctor have been hammy but I think that’s part of the job description to be honest! It is a family show at the end of the day.
I gave up on Broadchurch after the awful second series. It was such a letdown after the brilliant first series.

I think Matt Smith was the BEST Doctor--hands down (of the latest crop). The others were great in their own way, but I think Smith encapsulates everything a modern Doctor should be. He's charming, light on the quirk, appropriately menacing when needed to be, but most importantly, somehow both odd-looking AND cute. Eccleston was a good way to start the reboot, but to me, he was wayyy too dark and sexy to be the Doctor. There was no ambiguity there. You WANTED him to fuck you. He was too distracting. Tennant was a little over the top for me. I stopped watching after Smith left.

OP, I'm quite sure the director was more than happy with his performance as Barty Crouch, Jr. or he would have directed him to perform the character in a different manner. The character was a crazed, evil, lunatic. I think he did a stellar job of displaying the character as such.

Agree with OP -- he is the most extraordinary ham -- it's as though he thinks acting is all about pouting, eyebrows, and wild eyes.
Also agree with above poster that Matt Smith was much better. But actually, Peter Capaldi was surprisingly good -- at first he was awkward in the role, but he had the best scripts and he had the most interesting relationship to his companion in Clara, who taught him as much as he taught her.
Also interesting -- as unattractive as Capaldi looks now, he was once a handsome man,

Roger Ebert's review of 'Local Hero'.
[quote] Here is a small film to treasure, a loving, funny, understated portrait of a small Scottish town and its encounter with a giant oil company. The town is tucked away in a sparkling little bay, and is so small that everybody is well aware of everybody else's foibles. The oil company is run by an eccentric billionaire (Burt Lancaster) who would really rather have a comet named after him than own all the oil in the world. And what could have been a standard plot about conglomerates and ecology, etc., turns instead into a wicked study of human nature. . The movie opens in Houston, but quickly moves to the fishing village of Ferness. The oil company assigns an earnest young American (Peter Riegert) and a whimsical Scot (Peter Capaldi) to go to Ferness and buy it up, lock, stock and beachline, for a North Sea oil-refining complex. This is a simpler job than it appears, since a lot of the locals are all too willing to soak the off company for its millions of dollars, sell the beach, and go in search of the bright lights of Edinburgh. . But there are complications. One of them is old Ben, the cheerful philosopher who lives in a shack on the beach. It turns out that the beach has been the legal property of Ben's family for four centuries, ever since an ancestor did a favor for a king. And Ben doesn't want to sell: "Who'd look after the beach then? It would go to pieces in a short matter of time." . The local negotiations are handled by the innkeeper, Urquhart (Denis Lawson). He also is the accountant, and sort of the mayor, I guess, and is so much in love with his pretty wife that they're forever dashing upstairs for a quickie. Meanwhile, Riegert and Capaldi fall under the spell of the town, settle into its rhythms, become wrapped up in its intrigues, and, in general, are co-opted by a place whose charms are seductive. . What makes this material really work is the low-key approach of the writer-director, Bill Forsyth, who also made the charming "Gregory's Girl" and has the patience to let his characters gradually reveal themselves to the camera. He never hurries, and as a result, "Local Hero" never drags: Nothing is more absorbing than human personalities, developed with love and humor. Some of the payoffs in this film are sly and subtle, and others generate big laughs. . Forsyth's big scenes are his little ones, including a heartfelt, whiskey-soaked talk between the American and the innkeeper, and a scene where the visitors walk on the beach and talk about the meaning of life. By the time Burt Lancaster reappears at the end of the film, to personally handle the negotiations with old Ben, "Local Hero" could hardly have anything but a happy ending. But it's a fairly close call.

Well, 'Local Hero' may not be in the hallowed ranks of filmdom that some motion pictures achieved, but I'm sure those who found it "boring" would find something like this more to your liking. It's right up your alley. You won't have to use your little brains even once to figure out what's going on. It'll fairly slap you in the face from start to finish.

The woman from Posh Nosh (forgot her name) I believe was his landlady when he was an aspiring young actor.
I saw David T during his stint playing Hamlet for the RSC. He's a better stage actor IMO which makes sense as that's his training and background although he's made a more decent crossover than some. I prefer him in the hammier roles than more serious stuff like Broadchurch - I don't think that's his strength and possibly why he hasn't been able to crack the US despite numerous attempts.
There have always been odd rumours circulating about his personal life since Dr Who but he is notoriously private (doesn't do social media and interviews are mostly strictly business talk). His marriage is a bit of a curious affair by all accounts, there used to be long running blog a few years ago run by fanatics called The Sisters of Pervitude but I believe it was taken down after a C&D. Like other celebrity stans they dug deep into anything they could find and endlessly analysed. It was entertaining but ridiculously hyperbolic.
However there is still enough gossip out there that does point to an unusual arrangement with his wife. They appear to live quite separate lives despite 3/4 kids or at least that was the case a few years ago - I haven't really taken much notice in recent years since the tabloids bored of him. Possibly some of that separation was him endlessly trying to make it in the US.

His wife is pregnant with their fifth child.
The whole thing is bizarre. For year they lived mainly apart and he barely ever saw his kids, and refused to publicly acknowledge that she existed (making her walk behind him and enter events separately). Even though the family are notorious famewhores. Her dad was even selling looks at their wedding photos at a fan con.
Now she’s gone full famewhore and is pimping out their marriage and aspiring child actor kids all over social media.
The relationship between them and his female best friend Jennie (who is married to but living apart from Georgia’s best friend who lived with her while David was living in Canada) is also deeply odd, especially as the two women openly hate each other.

I love David's work. He's a scene stealer and that's what some consider hammy, but everyone is entitled to their opinion when it comes to art.
Good Omens is perfect for him. When I found out he was cast, I didn't have to know what role he took. Pratchett was a genius and Gaiman knew it. I hope more people become curious about his work. We lost a great one when he passed.

I miss Pratchett very much and I'm sad there won't be another book. R98 It isn't certain that there won't be a second season. Neil Gaiman who wrote all the episodes and co-wrote the orginal book, has made it clear that this season was always designed to be a limited series. But, he and Terry Pratchett had sketched out a sequel, so there is an idea for more. Amazon and the BBC could always commission more.

He’s hellaciously bad in Good Omens. Michael Sheehan acts circles around him (granted I’m a huge MS fan), but David T is just atrocious. He shreds scenery and plays the character like Jack Sparrow - lite. Everyone else is okay, but with an already jokey show, you’d think they’d want to rein him in, but no, he pouts and mugs and screeches his way through every scene.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | June 11, 2019 9:20 PM

I agree, he was horrible on Broadchurch. Every time he had one of his little 'freak outs' the acting was like watching an episode of Neighbours. He contorts his facial muscles and bulges his eyes so much I honestly wonder if he's double jointed in the face. Not to mention his terrible theatre voice which completely lacks modulation or nuance. It's either roaring at the top of his lungs and sneering at Olivia Colman's character, or doing his fey 'vulnerable' Nicole Kidman whisper in the more emotional scenes. There is no in between.
And he's like that in most things i've seen him in. I'm sure he's got great presence on stage but on screen I just never see the character. It's always David *~*ACTING*~* (with a capital A).
I miss series like Posh Nosh though. Joanna Lumley's narration was great. They could easily do a similar concept today, especially with all the upper-crust food products that have inundated our culture, or even a version about beauty treatments or something.
