Do we count Kubrick as an American even after he expatriated? If so, I can name two:

2001

Sunset Blvd

I’m tempted to say Streetcar, but many others could fit the third spot: Wizard of Oz, Citizen Cane, Mulholland Drive, The Shining (an eccentric choice but I stand by it), Snow White, Network, Alien, Star Wars...

I saw Network for the first time last year and was so excited given the hype. I didn’t get it. It was slow and rambling. I am probably not sophisticated enough for it; it’s so revered thst it must be me. But I really didn’t like it. I’d choosed Three Women over Nashville.

by Anonymousreply 57March 4, 2019 1:11 AM

Sorry, that last paragraph was about NASHVILLE, not Network.

by Anonymousreply 58March 4, 2019 1:13 AM

Kubrick didn't direct Sunset Boulevard, r57

by Anonymousreply 59March 4, 2019 1:17 AM

I think of Kubrick's movies as American through Lolita, then British after that, but I wonder what he himself thought, or if he cared one way or another?

by Anonymousreply 62March 4, 2019 1:25 AM

Kramer vs. Kramer was television-film quality.

by Anonymousreply 63March 4, 2019 1:25 AM

"Gone With The Wind"

by Anonymousreply 64March 4, 2019 1:25 AM

Manhattan, Annie Hall, Midnight in Paris

by Anonymousreply 65March 4, 2019 1:26 AM

Lady Sings the Blues

Mahogany

The Wiz

by Anonymousreply 66March 4, 2019 1:30 AM

R63 Kramer vs. Kramer won 23 awards.

by Anonymousreply 67March 4, 2019 1:31 AM

I know, R57. It was for 2001. If Kubrick didn’t count after his move to England, I’d have chosen Sunset Blvd and two others...not sure which ones, though.

I don’t consider any Hitchcock films really American, so I guess that no Kubrick films are really British.

by Anonymousreply 68March 4, 2019 1:32 AM

Thanks for clarifying r68

I love Carry Grant but never .liked Bringing Up Baby.

by Anonymousreply 72March 4, 2019 1:41 AM

I ranked Bringing Up Baby as among the "greatest" but, yes, his double-take schtick does wear thin.

by Anonymousreply 73March 4, 2019 1:43 AM

I love so many, I love The Shining.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Reds, or Casablanca or All About Eve or Vertigo or Godfather II. I’d say “The Haunting,” but technically it was a British film with an American director and star.

Goodfellas

Chinatown

Days of Heaven

Special mention: I've watched [italic]the Maltese Falcon[/italic] more than any other movie, but it has directorial flaws. It was Huston's directing debut; he didn't know how to get actors out of the shot, resulting in some overcrowded scenes. But excellent acting, great story and script, excellent mood, my favorite noir movie, and so very American.

Even though Hitchcock was British in origin, his most famous films are set in America and have American characters, so I would consider those American films. The same argument might be made about Kubrick's most famous films.

Time hasn't been very kind to Dr. Strangelove (or any other Peter Sellers film for that matter, with the possible exception of Being There).
