Why hasn’t Jean Dujardin had a bigger career in the states?
I know he’s huge back in France and he had his small stint here in the states after his win for “The Artist”, in films like Wolf of Wall Street and The Monuments Men, but he hardly does films here anymore.
He learned English well and he’s quite striking. Very handsome. I would love to see him do better here. Why isn’t he getting more work?

Because his English was and is still terrible, that's why. Same reason Ziyi Zhang didn't make it in Hollywood. You can wing it if you're a marvelous director, but an actor who needs to do junkets all the time? No.

How many films does Hollywood make that require a middle-aged Frenchman? They no longer make the continental romances of the like that Charles Boyer starred in back in the day. I'd love to see him in more American films, but c'est la vie.

Female foreign actresses who win Oscars tend to better then their male counterparts. He’d be great for a series or supporting roles. Unsure if his English has improved since his Oscar win, but there are many platforms today for any actor especially one with an Oscar.

French he-men go to Hollywood and can't stomach just how trashy it and everyone is. France has a very high tax bracket for the rich. Everyone who stays and works and lives in France who is rich is either very very very rich, or simply not that greedy and materialistic to be motivated to put up with non-French vulgarity.

I'm watching THE ARTIST now for the first time.... and I have more questions than answers!
Did the Academy go a bit overboard with the FIVE Oscars? I mean, this is basically SINGING IN THE RAIN, right?
Dujardin is wonderful, sexy, and charming, but was the expectation that he would work more in America? Or did the Academy just say, fuck it, it's time for another Roberto Benigni, it's fine if we never see him again?
Didn't fans of THE ARTIST find the musical score obnoxious, cloying, and intrusive? How the F did this win Best Score? I'm 30 minutes into the movie, and I want to watch the rest of it on mute.
How is it that the director, Michel Hazanavicius, has only directed 3 films in the almost 9 years since THE ARTIST?
And did anyone else think Penelope Ann Miller could have played Dujardin's mother as opposed to his wife, she looks so damn old?
Just saying.

I recently read a review with Antonio Banderas, and he said when he came to the US to work, he thought if he learned the language he'd be fine--but what he didn't realize is that even with fluent English he would be unable to master the accent. And by the time he really realized that, he had fathered a daughter with Melanie Griffith and was stuck here for the next eighteen years, and was stuck having to take basically any part that came his way in any genre that required a strong Spanish accent, since he could speak English no other way. Now his daughter is an adult he's moved back to Spain, where his choices are much broader.
I think Jean Dujardin was smarter than Banderas. His big film in the US did not require him to talk, and once he won the Oscar he could go back to France an even bigger star there than before. Had he stayed here, he would have had to scramble for whatever roles came up ever that require a French accent (his is very thick). He made the smart choice.

Again, as with Dujardin: Most of his work since has been for the Latin American cinema. There are not a lot of good roles written for men with heavy Mexican accents in Hollywood, so his choice there is very limited; there are all kinds of roles available to him in Mexican cinema, and as one of the biggest Mexican male film stars, he has first pick.

Personally I thought The Artist was by far the best film that year, and it's the one that's stuck with me over the intervening years whereas I can barely remember what films were acclaimed in the years surrounding 2012. It's a shame that Dujardin didn't get more work in American films, but I'd hate to see him suppressing his accent and turning himself into Bradley Cooper v 2.0 in pursuit of success here.

Overall he is a middle of the road actor. Not great, not bad just good/average. Also, he would be hard to cast in leading roles, however supporting roles should generally not be a problem.
Also, he has a huge career in France and may not be that interested in working in the US on a regular basis.

I’ve never understood why interesting actors like Banderas or Dujardin should only be cast in “foreigner” roles. Pretty much any action movie, rom com or thriller would work with a French guy or a Spanish guy in the lead, don’t you think? All they need to do is toss in a line into the script about the character having immigrated to the US or whatever. But no, the lead in every American movie has to go to some fucking bland guy named Chris

Well, that's pretty much what Banderas got--but they became few and far between. But he did not get the juicy dramatic roles he wanted.
Dujardin best likes doing comedy, and it's harder to be funny in a language not your own.

I think Dujardin's a classically handsome man and quite talented as an actor. ( In terms of looks, he reminds me a little of Jack Davenport, as Peter Smith-Kingsley, in [italic] The Talented Mr. Ripley. [/italic] ) To be honest though, I've only seen him in [italic] The Wolf Of Wall Street, [/italic] and [italic] The Artist [/italic] , despite him being in a number of other French and American films before and after those two. I'm aware they exist, I just haven't seen them around.

Also, you run into the "ONJ in 'Grease'" problem: even ju7st a line or two explaining you're something like a foreign exchange student seems pretty contrived.
In most of Arnold Schwarzenegger's films, they avoided this problem by just ignoring the thick accent altogether: but you can only do that for a huge box office star people will see no matter what,. and of course Scxhwarzenegger got mocked all the time for his heavy accent.

Finally, there's another truth we people from the US don't often like to admit, but is nonetheless true:
A lot of people from foreign countries just plain-out don't want to live and work in our country. They'd rather stay in their native countries, and especially not have to deal with the falsity that is Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 16, 2020 5:24 AM

If foreign-born actors want to work in American film and TV, how is it that some (like Banderas and others) are unable to lose their native accents?
American film and TV is filled with leading actors from all regions of the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa (eg, Charlize), Austria (Christophe Waltz), Kenya (Lupita N), India (Freida Pinto), just to name a few, all of whom can turn their accents on and off at will. Is it just a matter of training?
Of course, there are a handful like Sofia Vergara and Liam Neeson who never really shake their accents and work all the time, but they're exceptions.

It's too bad he was 10 years too late for the Ocean's 11 series because he definitely would have been great in those movies. He is classically handsome and is so suave in a suit. And he would have been able to use his comedic timing.

Dujardin is handsome in the way Jon Hamm is handsome. I love that dark-haired, masculine, mature look, but it's not in fashion in Hollywood at the moment.
Also, leading men in American movies almost never have an accent unless it's British or Australian. Even then, the Brits and Ozzies usually learn an American accent to get more roles. It's much easier to learn another accent of English than it is to lose a non-English accent. People who learn English as adults almost always retain a noticeable accent; French people especially tend to sound very foreign unless they learned English as children and use it all the time, as French Canadians do.

R56 nailed it. This is the case of Antonio Banderas also. DL can scream he is white all day, but he doesn’t get treated as white in this Country, or have top picks etc. like white actors. This is why he claims he is a man of color.
Being a white Hispanic doesn’t erase you being Hispanic, and automatically places you under “other” to most white people.

R47 Monica bellucci is like that. I remember an article saying she could never live in Hollywood because the women never eat and they're so frail and skinny and that she's Italian and she loves pasta and bread.

At this point Jean Dujardin is too old to be a leading man in American films. Plus he barely knew any English even well into his adulthood--he comes from a working class background I'm pretty sure and probably left school pretty young. He was really sexy in those early spy comedies he made in France, which were James Bond comic knockoffs. Also in France famous leading men work until they're over 70 so he can have much greater career longevity over there. Why should he come here? I'm sure he makes plenty of money in French films, relatively speaking, and he can enjoy life, which French people want to do.
