I don't know exactly what it is called, but it's frozen chicken in a bag. lightly-breaded chicken breast with Italian herbs and parmesean or something like that. You bake it in the oven. It's around $5/bag and one person can make 3-5 meals with it.
Their Belle Vie carbonated water is as good or better than LA Croix, and quite a bit cheaper.
Vegetables are pretty cheap there. You can usually get a 3-4 pack of zucchini for less than $1.50. I live near newer, high-traffic Aldi stores and produce freshness hasn't been an issue at the stores near me, although it seems to be a problem at some stores I've read about here.
Don't go on a Sunday, the shelves are bare.

The eggs are usually 50 cents a dozen and way better than the tasteless ones at Kroger and Meijer. Smoked gouda slices. Heavy cream half the grocery price. Giretto Pinot Grigio is really good for five bucks. Their hams are good. They recently added their own version of Smartfood and it's delicious at less than half the price. The big bags of restaurant style tortilla chips are excellent, though On the Border are still my fave.

Aldi buys from the same manufacturers as everyone else. You can see that their 'generic products' have the same size packaging but is printed with different words and colours.

They have their own brand of low carb bread that's identical to the Schmidt 647 brand, but half the price. I love their cheeses, white cheddar with cranberries yum. I like the random stuff too. I got a cast iron griddle plate for $20 and a mini Dutch oven for about the same price, quality of both is great.
As long as you're flexible brand wise, you save a lot by shopping there without losing quality.

I like eggs, dairy (hald&half, heavy cream), cheese, winking owl wine ($2.99 I cook with it, but it's drinkable), the g.s. cookie knockoffs, flour, sugar, baking spray (Pam knockoff).

Aldi has been promising to open a store in my city for over 2 years now. A newspaper story said the building permit said they'd start construction in Oct '18, to be completed by end of 1st Q '19. The location happens to be 3/4 mi from where I live, and the empty lot is still there, no sign of anything going on.

I'd be more excited about an Lidl opening in my area than an Aldi. I do like Aldi but Lidl seems to sell products that are higher in quality than Aldi.

Does the use of a cart still cost a quarter at Aldi?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 14, 2019 3:26 AM |
R21 Lidl is 100x better than Aldi. Their stores are actually nice and you don't feel like you are shopping in a dark backstreet warehouse. Their fresh vegetables are nicer and they have bakeries. And, you don't have to put a quarter in the shopping cart to use it.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 14, 2019 3:28 AM |
It doesn't cost you a quarter, R27. It's a deposit. You get it back when you return the cart.
If you live in a state that permits wine sales in grocery stores, then you can get perfectly acceptable cooking wine at Aldi for $3. But if you don't live in such a state, you probably don't need Aldi at all.

Lidl is in trouble in the US market. Americans are not shopping with them. The biggest complain is store locations. And why are the only on the East coast? Odd.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 14, 2019 3:34 AM |
Lidl is slowly expanding up the East coast. They bought a chain of supermarkets on long island that will be converted to Lidl stores.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 14, 2019 3:38 AM |
R30 It is easier to start in one geographic area and then expand. It is how most retailers, especially grocery stores develop.

Aldis are quite off putting.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 14, 2019 3:45 AM |
R29 Being from South Carolina, I fully expect to not be able to buy liquor in grocery stores, but until your post I didn't realize there are states where you can't buy wine in a grocery store. That seems very backwards, thankfully this is one time we aren't the backward ones.

Our Aldi's in Sydney are great. Their day and night facial serums and night serums are amazing value. Have been using them for years. Love their meat and dairy, fresh and frozen foods. It's only an issue if you would like something in particular that they don't stock, but majority of the selection is quite good and has improved over the years. I'm a sucker for German/European cookies and specialties, especially around Christmas time.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 14, 2019 5:08 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 14, 2019 10:09 AM |
That may be correct, R36, but only in the same states where you can buy Aldi's Winking Owl label. You're either all in on this one, or all out.
In any event, this is not a thread about what you can buy at Trader Joe.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 14, 2019 6:55 PM |
I was shopping at Aldi a lot earlier this year but stopped after the third time in a row that they were out of the 3 or 4 things I went for - they're terrible about restocking.

The Aldi version of Golden Grahams and Wheat Thins. My friend buys out their sweet potato chips whenever she goes. She also likes the goat cheese and pear flatbread pizza. Someone upthread mentioned some kind of frozen chicken. I bought a bag of the panko-crusted breasts for $9. Absolutely delicious and the bag was huge! Haven't been able to find them since. Ugh to that. I am a total Aldi nerd.

Well goddamn, where doth a woke shopper such as R45 shop, then? Do you always trace the history four generations back when deciding where to shop?
I guess we all have our own special interests. I like that Aldi charges people for plastic bags (and as such, most of the shoppers at my Aldi bring their own or use a box). They're going to phase out a lot of their unnecessary plastics in the next year or two. Many of their packages are labeled as to which parts of the packaging are recyclable and what needs to go in the trash. I don't see this done as often in other stores. And I like that they pay a relatively decent wage. The fact that they're cheap is the icing on the cake-- I don't need to spend $8 on a loaf of brioche just to show I care.

I have found that the produce at Aldi and Lidl rots very quickly. However the diary and deli meats are good deals. Jarred and canned items are well priced. Nuts, seeds. Some household items. Juice and bottled water. Bread. They import specialty items for limited runs that are hit or miss but at least add variety to the shopping cart. I don't buy the wine, any I have tried is mediocre and averagely priced. I like looking at the JUNK aisles, which frankly remind me of dime stores and dollar stores of old. Where else to buy ping pong paddles, citronella candles, or snorkel fins, for a song? 10 years ago I would buy some sportswear specials at fair prices. Synthetic but functional crap one does not need to pay designer prices.

Their parmesan cheese in the container on the shelf is strangely flavored grit with no resemblance to cheese.

Fuck them, they discontinued their sugar free coffee creamer which was better and cheaper than the name brands. Since they remodeled their stores the quality has definitely gone down.

This was nearly 20 years ago, but upon moving into my first apartment, I literally bought my entertainment center there, lol. I was initially put off by how "cold" and "uninviting" the stores were relative to the other grocery chains around here, but it eventually grew on me. I like that it's streamlined so you can get in and get out - the cashiers don't fuck around either, they're fast as hell. There is actually a sense of urgency to get people rang up and out of the line right away. It's not a place for passive aggressive bitches to shop, hem haw around, block aisles, bring all their brats along with them to bother everyone, chat on their phones the whole time, and peruse.

I went to Aldi for the first time today. What a depressing shithole. There was one register open and lots of sad looking products for sale. I bought a sponge so I could get some cash. It took forever because I had to wait in line behind the typical assortment of old people and fat women with children. There was nothing magical about it. It's like a cross between Trader Joe's and Fiesta (Mexican grocery store).

They have recently added Parmesan cheese crisps. Very much like “Whisps” if you have those in your area. They have zero carbs and are DELICIOUS. Especially the jalapeño version. I also vote for their bagged Cesar salads. The dressing is shockingly good for being so inexpensive.

No. The Aldi Brothers are not war criminals. For that they are mich to young. Remember WW II ended 1945, 74 years ago. So the youngest fighting on each side during that war are mostly dead.
Theodor "Theo" Albrecht and his brother started 1948 with a very small local grocery store which based on her mothers heritage bakery with a new business. They struggled many times, also cause serviced groceries dies. The reinvented themselves many times.
And finally they got the idea to sell their goods literally right away from the delivery trucks. This was ALDI shops looked like until the very late 90's.
