Why Does Everyone HATE Glenn Close?

Seriously? What has she done to make people in Hollywood hate her so much?

Remember this is the ENTIRE Academy voting for the acting categories - it includes behind the scenes crew

Olivia Coleman did win LA Film Critics and National Board of Review award, plus Golden Globe and BAFTA so she should have been pegged as a favorite.

BUT

in 1989 Michelle Pfeiffer swept all four major critics awards (LA & NY Film Critics, National Society and National Board of Review) to win Best Actress for "Fabulous Baker Boys" but lost to Jessica Tandy for Driving Miss Daisy - strictly for sentimental reasons.

So if Glenn should have won for sentimental reasons, this was the year. But she didn't, which proves she not likes in Hollywood. As the Oscars are popularity contest

by Anonymousreply 1February 25, 2019 1:05 PM

She looked like a fucking idiot last night, dressed up like an Oscar to collect what she clearly felt was her due. And her movie was boring as hell. She wouldn’t even be in the conversation if she hadn’t been nominated so many times and lost for better performances.

by Anonymousreply 2February 25, 2019 1:11 PM

That movie was barely a movie. Come back with a better vehicle and we'll give you that damn award you want so much.

by Anonymousreply 3February 25, 2019 1:13 PM

Do you think her background may incite envy in some voters? There are so many actors who come from old money like Armie Hammer and Kate & Rooney Mara but I'm wondering if there is some form of resentment for those who don't come from humble beginnings. You'll notice Armie was the only actor from CMBYBN who was not nominated last year and Rooney was passed over for one of those dragon sequels.

There is also the nepotism angle in Hollywood but that's another discussion for another day.

by Anonymousreply 4February 25, 2019 1:13 PM

They should create the Lauren Bacall Honorary Oscar for distinguished actresses who were so hated in Hollywood that nobody would ever vote for them during their active careers.

by Anonymousreply 5February 25, 2019 1:17 PM

No one hates her, it's now become a thing NOT to vote for her. Every year she gets more press than the winners.

Once she wins, no one will ever give a fuck about her again. It's a GOOD thing she keeps losing.

by Anonymousreply 6February 25, 2019 1:30 PM

I don't think she's hated... she's respected because she gets nominated all the time. But there always seems to be someone or some politics that gets in her way. She's Jan Brady or Edith Crawley.

by Anonymousreply 7February 25, 2019 1:31 PM

[quote] ut there always seems to be someone or some politics that gets in her way.

There is not a single political reason Olivia Colman won

by Anonymousreply 8February 25, 2019 1:32 PM

Olivia is charming, people who meet her want to be her friend. Glenn is just so graaaaaaaand.

by Anonymousreply 9February 25, 2019 1:34 PM

Glenn Close won the SAG - so obviously she has actors in the Academy on her side

It is the industry producers, directors, DOP, technicians, all the behind the scenes crew that voted AGAINST her

That says something.

by Anonymousreply 10February 25, 2019 1:34 PM

Just the 7? Sometimes losing is the best thing for your career. (Well, your bank account anyway).

R8, no there isn't. So in this case she was the someone. Tough being a genius?

by Anonymousreply 12February 25, 2019 1:47 PM

All opinions about Glenn and/or this role aside, I think G's handicap here was that her role was the ONLY thing her movie was up for, so I think fewer people saw it.

Even The Favourite, which wasn't exactly a barnstorming hit, had a few other nominations.

by Anonymousreply 13February 25, 2019 1:50 PM

G is the poor man's M I've heard tell. No one likes fakes and wannabes.

by Anonymousreply 14February 25, 2019 1:50 PM

I know she's been nominated a bunch of times, but she deserved the Oscar for Dangerous Liaisons.

by Anonymousreply 15February 25, 2019 1:56 PM

She’s ugly!

by Anonymousreply 16February 25, 2019 2:04 PM

Glenn's movie was also released in the summer- lots of time for the buzz to dry up.

Producers need to hurry up with the Sunset Boulevard movie

by Anonymousreply 17February 25, 2019 2:20 PM

sit back with a 20th anniversary viewing of Cookie's Fortune and let future generations figure it out.

I think she will be more known for never having won an Oscar than having won one last night.

by Anonymousreply 20February 25, 2019 2:30 PM

Didn't she grow up in some cult? Was it a rich cult? Have I confused her with someone else?

by Anonymousreply 21February 25, 2019 2:42 PM

The Oscar is not an ENTITLEMENT, Millennials. It's hit and miss, and Glenn missed it.

by Anonymousreply 22February 25, 2019 2:52 PM

R20 You're right!

by Anonymousreply 23February 25, 2019 3:06 PM

It wasn't robbery, robbery.

by Anonymousreply 24February 25, 2019 3:08 PM

Whenever anyone mentions how Susan Lucci was nominated 47 times for a soap Emmy before finally winning, or however many times it was, they always fail to mention that, despite her popularity, she started out on "All My Children" as a terrible actress and never really improved.

by Anonymousreply 25February 25, 2019 3:30 PM

They better not hurry that Sunset movie for her.

Nothing's wrong with playing 50. Unless you're actually 70. She past it.

Ding ding ding.

Also I think a lot of people didn't vote for her because they assumed she'd win.

by Anonymousreply 27February 25, 2019 3:42 PM

[quote] Didn't she grow up in some cult? Was it a rich cult? Have I confused her with someone else?

She grew up semi-wealthy in Greenwich and her parents later joined a cult which later became Up with People.

by Anonymousreply 28February 25, 2019 3:48 PM

She has always lost to mediocre performances from other actors. Cher and Jodie Foster for starters.

by Anonymousreply 29February 25, 2019 4:03 PM

Yes....

by Anonymousreply 30February 25, 2019 4:19 PM

Everyone should have a fried like Glenn Close!

by Anonymousreply 31February 25, 2019 4:21 PM

it's the rabbit karma: she killed one in Fatal Attraction, she lost her oscar to a rabbit aficionado character. Don't mess with rabbits, bitch!

by Anonymousreply 32February 25, 2019 4:36 PM

Semi-wealthy, r28? She came from a wealthy family in Greenwich who were very much part of New England social elite. Her grandparents founded the Round Hill Country Club. She went to boarding school in Switzerland and Rosemary Hall (Greenwich). Yes, her family were involved in the Moral Re-armament/Up With People thing, but they never gave all their money away, or anything like that.

by Anonymousreply 33February 25, 2019 4:42 PM

I said it last night, Amy Adams lost for the 6th time. Does that mean people don't like her? Peter O'toole lost 8 times. Did people hate him? I wanted Glenn to win. Maybe people do hate her. It must feel like a bitter joke to get the nominations time after time and no win.

by Anonymousreply 34February 25, 2019 4:56 PM

It only means she's fat, R34.

by Anonymousreply 35February 25, 2019 4:57 PM

[quote] I said it last night, Amy Adams lost for the 6th time. Does that mean people don't like her? Peter O'toole lost 8 times. Did people hate him? I wanted Glenn to win. Maybe people do hate her. It must feel like a bitter joke to get the nominations time after time and no win.

Amy Adams is considerably younger than Glenn Close. Amy Adams will probably win one before Glenn.

by Anonymousreply 36February 25, 2019 5:15 PM

Amy Adams is so overrated.( Good in Proof and that Disney Movie thing though) But once you start getting nominated, they just check you off in the box even though they haven't even seen your movie. Like people just used to think Pacino and Nicholson should be nominated. They were probably good right? Wrong.

by Anonymousreply 37February 25, 2019 5:30 PM

I HATE HER

by Anonymousreply 38February 25, 2019 5:30 PM

I think Academy people are still nominating Amy Adams because they are trying to make up for not giving her the Oscar for JUNEBUG. She should have won for that.

by Anonymousreply 39February 25, 2019 5:47 PM

R32 So by that logic, Olivia’s characters being a rabbit aficionado in the Favorite made her a shoo in for the award with and extra level of “fuck you” to go along with it. Good thing Emma didn’t step on that rabbit for real or she would doom herself to no more Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 40February 25, 2019 5:56 PM

If Melissa would have dressed up as The Wife, would Glenn have won?

by Anonymousreply 41February 25, 2019 6:01 PM

You people will know what hate is when Sunset Boulevard with Lady Gaga is released.

by Anonymousreply 42February 25, 2019 6:01 PM

^^^ No, starring Patti Lupone would be the bitterest pill for her.

by Anonymousreply 43February 25, 2019 6:14 PM

Glenn is now too old for the part, Patti too wide.

by Anonymousreply 44February 25, 2019 6:22 PM

1989 was 30 years ago r1. The Academy can't have been completely static.

by Anonymousreply 45February 25, 2019 6:24 PM

They don't OP- DL is not the world you know.

by Anonymousreply 46February 25, 2019 6:48 PM

R40 is a BLAST at parties!! a BLAST!!

by Anonymousreply 47February 25, 2019 7:05 PM

They won’t nominate her again. They’d probably be afraid of what she’d dress up as next time - The Pyramids?

by Anonymousreply 48February 25, 2019 7:37 PM

Up With People was a cult?

by Anonymousreply 49February 28, 2019 2:22 AM

She knows what she did.

by Anonymousreply 50February 28, 2019 2:31 AM

R49 Glenn has described it as a cult, and others have stated that it is cult like, if not an actual cult. One interesting aspect of Up with People, is that it originated with the group Moral Re-Armament , which grew out of the Oxford Group, just like AA.

by Anonymousreply 51February 28, 2019 3:24 AM

Glenn Close is a skilled actress who has all the warmth and charisma of an iceberg plotting to sink a ship. That arch, patrician persona that worked so well for Bette Davis , Roz Russell, Kate Hepburn and others in the first half (or so) of the 20th century just does not play to modern audiences without that "wink" that Glenn just can't pull off (unlike Meryl). Frankly, I was quite pleased she lost. Primarily because I detest "career achievement" Oscars, secondly because it truly was just an OK performance in a really bad movie, and lastly because Olivia Coleman was fucking masterful in The Favorite.

by Anonymousreply 52February 28, 2019 3:57 AM

well, I met her. Hung out in her dressing room once. She wasn't very nice. She wasn't mean either but....

by Anonymousreply 53February 28, 2019 4:23 AM

She regurgitated in my breakfast cereal.

by Anonymousreply 54February 28, 2019 4:30 AM

I’m still laughing at her loss! She wore that stupid dress thinking that she had a lock on the win. What a cunt. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Bitch!!

by Anonymousreply 55February 28, 2019 5:02 AM

She definitely does have an old fashioned arch style at times that doesn't translate to all the young folks who think someone like Rooney Mara is an acting icon because she "like, does so little, man. That's real acting." There's a grandness to Close just like there was a grandness to Bette Davis. It doesn't work for every role, but for a role like Alex Forrest or Norma Desmond, you HAVE to play it grand or no one will give a shit. Can you imagine a little charisma void like Kristen Stewart playing a role like Norma Desmond? They just don't make 'em like Glenn anymore and I think that's a shame. Maybe she was born too late to really be appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 56February 28, 2019 5:06 AM

She gives me the creeps. Maybe she gives the Academy the creeps too.

by Anonymousreply 57February 28, 2019 5:32 AM

I think the heart and soul of the Academy has shifted. Over the past several years, the industry has been wanting the Academy to become younger and more diverse. Well, not only this year, but in the past several years, the Academy has been heading in that younger and more diverse direction. As a a result--and the downside of all of this--is that that younger and more diverse Academy membership has no connection to Glenn Close. They have heard of Fatal Attraction, but it hasn't reached cult status, so the younger, more diverse members don't realize what a powerhouse Glenn was in that movie. Glenn was Fatal Attraction.

Next....the film that Glenn really should have won for was Dangerous Liaisons. Glenn was brilliant. But if Fatal Attraction is somewhat forgotten, Dangerous Liaisons is not even a blip in history for the younger, more diverse crowd. Plus, Dangerous Liaisons isn't even a movie that would appeal to this new crowd. So the bottom line is: Glann has appeared in blockbuster, outstanding movies that today's crowd don't find relevant today. The mentality today is why vote for a Hollywood icon we hardly know anyomre, when I can vote for the flavor of the month such as Olivia Colman, who is the shiny penny, while Glenn is kind of old hat.

Glenn should have won this year. I'm pissed. But that's my theory.

by Anonymousreply 58February 28, 2019 5:39 AM

I don't recall if any of older classic Hollywood was even really represented at these awards. What happened to the Thalberg Award and such?

by Anonymousreply 59February 28, 2019 5:59 AM

Tell me more, r53...’cause she sounds like a drag.

by Anonymousreply 60February 28, 2019 10:23 AM

Who? One must be aware to detest. I don’t know her.

by Anonymousreply 61February 28, 2019 10:34 AM

She just needs to complain like Spike Lee.

by Anonymousreply 62February 28, 2019 11:18 AM

I love Glenn. And not for any reason other than her extraordinary talent. From Damages to The Wife, she gives the highest-caliber performances that we see today. She is one of the best. And it’s all the more remarkable (being honest, not shady) that she is still able to spell out her characters’ thoughts as they flow through her even despite facial fillers and probable Botox. This all sounds hyperbolic, but she’s just one of the greatest living performers, period.

She doesn’t deserve a sympathy award or a consolation prize. Mostly, she is probably a victim of bad timing, nominated in years when other performances stand out as much as hers. It is very strange to me though that the Academy has not recognized her the way it does Streep, who regardless of awards receives public applause and acclaim, deference to her opinions, is always mentioned as THE great. I really don’t get it. I know many here don’t like Streep. I do. I think she’s a huge talent. I also think Close is Streep’s peer, on par with her. And it’s just weird.

Streep did Bridges of Madison County—one of the snooziest movies I’ve ever tried to watch—and people built altars to her.

Close did The Wife—an OK script transformed into a compelling, driving film mainly because of Close channeling her character’s thoughts onto her face and into her voice and mannerisms—and she gets a cool “that was pretty good, old girl” from the industry.

Streep does trifles like Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods, and people call her daring and unpredictable and lighthearted. Close does 101 Dalmatians and people wonder if she is washed up, resorting to a campy cartoon role.

It’s fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 63February 28, 2019 12:04 PM

Why is Meryl so liked? She has been making some crap like Mama Mia and Ricki and The Flash.

by Anonymousreply 64February 28, 2019 12:28 PM

R64 = bunny boiler

by Anonymousreply 65February 28, 2019 12:30 PM

She SHOULD have won the Oscar for The Stepford Wife’s.

by Anonymousreply 66February 28, 2019 12:35 PM

Bridges is one of M’s best roles - great performance, great film.

by Anonymousreply 67February 28, 2019 1:40 PM

If she wasn’t such a bitch, maybe people would vote for her to win an oscar.

by Anonymousreply 68February 28, 2019 1:54 PM

I DON'T hate Glenn Close. I hate Meryl Streep.

by Anonymousreply 69February 28, 2019 2:05 PM

Glenn really was fucking hilarious in The Stepford Wives. She and Bette almost made that movie tolerable.

by Anonymousreply 70February 28, 2019 6:24 PM

not counting her 40 year career, she would deserve a fucking Oscar just for Damages. She was terrifying as Patty Hewes, one of the greatest villain in tv history

by Anonymousreply 71February 28, 2019 6:27 PM

R71 I agree, even if it was a TV show. Oscar-worthy performance.

by Anonymousreply 72February 28, 2019 6:37 PM

[quote]Glenn should have won this year. I'm pissed.

Why? Coleman was brilliant, Gaga gave a raw and natural performance nobody expected. McCarthy surprised in quirky little dark comedy that every one likes, and Aparicio gave one of those one off, out of nowhere performances that sometimes wins (a la Marlee Matlin). Glen was the only tolerable element of a truly forgettable film.

by Anonymousreply 73March 1, 2019 1:50 AM

When G dies she'll be left out of the Oscars in memoriam slideshow.

by Anonymousreply 74March 1, 2019 2:14 AM

If you have anything to say about it.

by Anonymousreply 75March 1, 2019 5:31 AM

R71, yes. Absolutely brilliant and terrifying.

Well this here old fart had seen enough really misbegotten Oscar wins to no longer give much credence to that award.

by Anonymousreply 76March 1, 2019 5:35 AM

It's Olivia Colman, not Coleman, dears.

by Anonymousreply 77March 1, 2019 5:39 AM

[quote]Coleman was brilliant,

I didn't this so, at all. Her character flattens halfway though and it doesn't evolve further than misery in the last thirty minutes.

I though she was more interesting in Broadchurch.

by Anonymousreply 78March 1, 2019 5:49 AM

“Why? ...Glen was the only tolerable element of a truly forgettable film.”

That alone is a good reason. Best Actress isn’t awarded for ‘best movie’ or ‘best writing.’ It’s for acting. If the star alone elevates a mediocre movie to something memorable, then that star is among the best. I would say that Lady Gaga did that, as well; both her acting and her musical performances are the only element that made ‘A Star Is Born’ better than a Lifetime movie of the week in my opinion.

I haven’t seen ‘The Favourite’ and so I can’t say Colman didn’t give the best performance. But Close’s performance was great. The Wife had a slow-burning plot and Close kept me interested the whole time, and at the very end of the movie her line delivery and expressions alone made me go...oh...oh! OH! and want to watch it again immediately.

by Anonymousreply 79March 1, 2019 6:59 AM

Glenn was in the absolutely dreadful father figures earlier this year, that couldn't have helped

by Anonymousreply 80March 1, 2019 8:03 AM

Colman's teeth bother me. I thought British women now get that fixed.

by Anonymousreply 81March 1, 2019 8:38 AM

50 year olds in the 50’s looked 70.

by Anonymousreply 82March 1, 2019 9:14 AM

William Holden is 32 in the movie but looks much older

by Anonymousreply 83March 1, 2019 9:18 AM

Sunset Boulevard? Why yes, the Academy are sure to award her chewing the scenery while singing flat.

by Anonymousreply 84March 1, 2019 9:39 AM

Her age isn’t a problem, Close definitely looks younger than 70.
