Olivia Colman sucks.
91st Academy Awards Thread - Part 7
by Anonymous | reply 602 | February 26, 2019 1:39 PM |
So unfair to Glenn. The Oscars are too political.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 25, 2019 3:13 AM |
Working into the 7th thread is pretty decent. Will be interesting to see if the same interest is reflected in the TV ratings tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 25, 2019 5:41 AM |
Hah! HAHAHAHAHA! Not only did this closet case, drug addled, baggy eyed mess fall of the stage, he broke his Oscar too. Don't fuck with Freddie, Rami! Look what you did.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 25, 2019 6:02 AM |
He did seem drunk or high on something...
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 25, 2019 6:04 AM |
Why do so few people actually prepare speeches that a) are good and b) fit the allotted time? We all know you get drowned out by music if you ramble so why not goddamn prepare for it?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 25, 2019 6:09 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 25, 2019 6:21 AM |
Anybody want to take a guess at the TV rating? Least watched ever?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 25, 2019 7:20 AM |
I think it's going to be even worse than last year's and last year's was the least watched ever.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 25, 2019 7:30 AM |
Since Bradley isn't a professional singer, why didn't he wear an ear monitor so he could stay in tune?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 25, 2019 7:32 AM |
R5, because they don’t think he will win.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 25, 2019 7:36 AM |
I still cannot believe the way they pandered tonight. This was the Academy Awards for goodness sake yet it looked like a rigged low-rent version of a BET awards show. The presenters were comprised of no-name or long forgotten black actors, black musicians, black athletes (why was Serena presenting?) and a black politician. The winners were also a joke.
It would be an understatement to say the Academy committed suicide tonight. They're officially over.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 25, 2019 7:40 AM |
People in their 20s don't watch these shows...that is why they need some old stars, like Julia Roberts. But should they have held her too the end? No one even said she was there.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 25, 2019 7:42 AM |
Just drop dead, racist pig. Those who won tonight should have one except for Glenn.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 25, 2019 7:48 AM |
Where was Clooney, Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock, Daniel Day Lewis, Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, and Hugh Jackman?
Couldn't they have been asked instead of getting Pharrell Williams and Serena to present who have never acted in a movie???
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 25, 2019 7:49 AM |
The Favourite fucking deserved that Oscar, best film of the year for me and I'm mexican. Green Book is more pandering bullshit that no one has time for, Oscar films are becoming more and more culturally marginal and they choose that POS. Fuck them.
Olivia's win was worth it just to see Yorgos Lanthimos shed some tears and kneeling in front of her, such a heart-warming moment. You can see he fell in love with his cast despite appearing so aloof in general.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 25, 2019 7:50 AM |
However woefully pathetic the irrelevant Oscar ceremony was, they redeemed themselves slightly by mentioning the largely unknown in the US Swiss actor Bruno Ganz in the In Memoriam.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 25, 2019 7:50 AM |
Can any american please enlighten me on why Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are such a fixture at awards shows? Tehy're boring af.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 25, 2019 7:52 AM |
I have no idea why they invited Serena? Maybe she is looking to mAke films...but she should not.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 25, 2019 7:55 AM |
How on earth is a win for Colman "political?"
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 25, 2019 7:56 AM |
Pharrell Williams is a recent nominee who had major success when he performed "Happy" at the Oscars a few years ago.
People saying he had no right to be there are jackasses.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 25, 2019 7:58 AM |
R18 They get presenters who have nothing better to do than to show up three to four hours before the live broadcast plus endure another hour, two or more until they're "on".
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 25, 2019 7:59 AM |
I do feel they did a decent job in the Memoriam part this year. I liked that they showed a very fair blend of behind the camera people along with actors. Some got a "double shot", and it was nice to see Tab Hunter and Penny Marshall get that treatment. I am sure they missed some important people, but they did mention that in the opening to the segment. There was one very notable miss, but thanks to being fucking old I can't recall who.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 25, 2019 8:00 AM |
R14 you seem to have anger issues and difficulty comprehending the fact we all are entitled to post our observations of the awards ceremony.
Take heart for I won't be watching next year because tonight proved to me the Academy is more interested in pandering to the incessantly squeaky wheel than they are to awarding presenting slots and nominations to those who are truly deserving of the honor. #RIPOscar.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 25, 2019 8:02 AM |
They are admitting me to the ER momentarily. I’m sure I will be OK... but, please pray for me just in case.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 25, 2019 8:03 AM |
What a pile of dogshit that reeked of anti-while bias, and pandered to females throughout. No doubt, this will have the worst ratings ever. If women are so wise and powerful why do they need incessantly to be told how strong they are. Fucking sick of this crap.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 25, 2019 8:05 AM |
Plenty of white people won tonight. What're you talking about?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 25, 2019 8:08 AM |
Just drop dead, racist jerk at r26. You are an ignorant liar.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 25, 2019 8:09 AM |
R12 last year Get Out won for best Screenplay. Though it wasn’t a bad movie, it was mediocre at BEST. The Oscars have been pandering for awhile.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 25, 2019 8:12 AM |
My only disappointment is the actress who played Shuri in Blank Panther wasn’t nominated for best supporting actress.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 25, 2019 8:13 AM |
I don't really care that blacks are pandered to and awarded at these show more then they deserve. It's the endless pathetic begging for approval by women that makes me sick. If you're so equal then shut the fuck up.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 25, 2019 8:16 AM |
It's sickening how much society has regressed lately. The board has been all "A man wore a dress, that's disgusting" and "There are too many black people on TV."
It's insane that so many have fallen back to 1962. How the hell did we get here?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 25, 2019 8:19 AM |
Yes R29, but you have to admit tonight was intentional on the Academy's part. They catered to one specific group throughout the entire awards ceremony. I can't wait to see the ratings for this shitfest.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 25, 2019 8:20 AM |
For the record, 37 out of the 49 winners were white, which makes up 75% of the victors, so for those complaining about race you're still safely in the majority.
Of the minority winners, only 7 were Black, 3 were Asian, 1 was Mexican, and 1 Iranian.
The uproar in response to this is mind boggling.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 25, 2019 8:30 AM |
So very sick of dumb ass DL racists that have absolutely no idea whatsover how stupid they look.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 25, 2019 8:37 AM |
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 25, 2019 8:42 AM |
R34, tonight's broadcast was an exercise in pandering. If you can't see that, well, such is life.
R35, brush up on your grammar, dear. If you're going to accuse someone at least use proper syntax.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 25, 2019 8:49 AM |
Is it all really old racist people on DL? There was no pandering. The black people who won deserved to win. You can’t really argue that the costumes and set design were undeserved for Black Panther. And Regina King and Ali have been the front runners and favorites to win since their films came out. The only thing that maybe shouldn’t have won was Greenbook and of course Olivia Colman.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 25, 2019 9:01 AM |
One could argue that the strongest bit of pandering was that full blown Queen opening, and that was full of white people.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 25, 2019 9:04 AM |
Incel alert at r26. Incel, we have your IP address. We have reported you to the authorities.
Why? For existing.
There was no pandering. The black people who won deserved to win.
Subjective opinion. One can equally opine that the black people who won were pandered to.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 25, 2019 9:08 AM |
Someone on the last thread (perhaps the last to the last?) said the stage reminded them of Trump's hair. Well...

Who was the woman who came dressed as the Milky Way galaxy?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 25, 2019 9:12 AM |
One could opine just that R41 but the one that does is signalling in irrefutable terms their conviction that black people are undeserving and any focus they get can only be due to unfair attention. Such opinions produce all the effects of racism, because they are racist , you and your fellows here of the same stripe may as well declare your hatred for black people as a time saving preface if you ever feel the need to opine again.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 25, 2019 9:28 AM |
I think the racist are young people, extremely ignorant young people, or Russians.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 25, 2019 9:32 AM |
There are very few young people who come here and fewer still who have any interest in the Oscars R45 and even fewer than that who would use the word 'opine' as R41 does, I think we're looking at racists well up in years.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 25, 2019 9:43 AM |
R44, I'm not R41 but if you could possibly present your point without using someone else's thought process and canned talking points that would be greatly appreciated.
As for your point of "unfair attention" if you don't think Serena Williams, Congressman Lewis, and every D-List black actor was not pandering to a certain group then I don't know what to tell you. They didn't belong at the Academy Awards and they cheapened the ceremony and tarnished the brand. I would say the same if the Academy was trying to appease any other group by bringing in no-name actors, athletes, and politicians to present for the most prestigious award ceremony in the business.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 25, 2019 9:44 AM |
Most older people have learned about race problems by living through the 60s, most are not completely ignorant. Most of us know who the bad guys were and they were all fucking white.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 25, 2019 9:55 AM |
They don't belong there according to you, a history of 'white's only' attitudes is coming to an end, black people are getting a share of attention and you don't like it. I remember Bob Hope having military figures on his Oscar telecasts with no fuss about non actors. The imbalance between a black persons' potential for success in America and their white counterparts is still very much in evidence, something like the Oscars' trying to give visibilty to black people is not to the detriment of others, white people being threatened by black people being given a share of the spotlight is ugly.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 25, 2019 9:56 AM |
R49 for R47
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 25, 2019 9:57 AM |
How sad does your reality have to be when you're bitching about the fucking presenters? These people just want something to bitch about.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 25, 2019 10:01 AM |
R46, we've frequently had trolls on DL who go into that ridiculous high-tone writing style people put on when they feel insecure and want to give themselves an air of superiority. They think they come across as intellectual, and if someone is [italics] intellectually [/italics] racist, then surely that means racism is just good thinking.
I've seen a lot of that tonight, including a couple who curiously disappeared when teased for their posts, only to have others who sound just like them take their place.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 25, 2019 10:06 AM |
They know what they are bitching about R51, they think the blacks are getting unfair advantages, they hate anything that smacks of affirmative action, with those lazy good for nothings getting a leg up over decent hard working white people.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 25, 2019 10:06 AM |
It's "italic," I guess. Should have stuck with the tried-and-true ALL CAPS for emphasis.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 25, 2019 10:07 AM |
How is Rami Malek playing Freddie Mercury NOT cultural appropriation? Mercury was born of Indian parents, while Malek is Egyptian? Where's the outrage?
Not that I give a shit, but it would be nice for the SJWs to at least be consistent.
I guess if Mickey Rooney were still alive, Hollywood would have given him a shot at the role.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 25, 2019 10:11 AM |
Well, I for one , loved the whole show except for the the fools that won the 2nd or 3rd Oscar, the three that kept passing around the thank you list.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 25, 2019 10:13 AM |
You should be on Twitter r55, because a lot of people pointed that out. Also that Freddie was bi but portrayed as gay, and Rami kept calling him gay in his acceptance speeches.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 25, 2019 10:17 AM |
R51, how many times does it have to be explained? The Academy Awards used to have major stars presenting awards. It used to be a big deal and it's what people tuned in to see. For you to tell me I just want something to bitch about is so beyond the pale (no pun intended because you assholes have no sense of humor) it's absurd.
No one and I mean NO ONE tunes into the Academy Awards to see a bunch of nobodies. And that's what we saw tonight - a bunch of nobodies with a few athletes, a politician and a musician who's pushing 50 but still feels the need to dress in shorts for formal functions. What an embarrassment.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 25, 2019 10:22 AM |
Hi wanted to be perceived as straight R57 by the public, had a girlfriend who , when he said he was 'bi,' corrected him by saying 'no , you're gay', he was a pretty fucked up closet case but ultimately a gay man. Perhaps if he'd lived he would have become a queen mother figure like Elton John, another formerly tortured gay soul who trod the bi route ( even marrying an available random woman ) before becoming supergay of the world.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 25, 2019 10:23 AM |
Perhaps the show is not for you anymore R58 Greer Garson is dead and black people are allowed out in public these days, I'm exaggerating slightly, which I'm sure your keen sense of humour will appreciate, but you get the point, you think you are the exasperated voice of common sense but you merely sound like someone angry at the passage of time and certain people not knowing their place.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 25, 2019 10:28 AM |
I was surprised more movie stars weren’t in attendance, like any. Were they not invited?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 25, 2019 10:33 AM |
R60 you sound so white and foolish.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 25, 2019 10:34 AM |
you merely sound like someone angry at the passage of time
That could describe the majority of the bitching tonight. They wanted those featured in the In Memoriam to be presenters.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 25, 2019 10:35 AM |
Like where were Tom and Rita Hanks? They have a black grandbaby, that should’ve secured them tickets.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 25, 2019 10:36 AM |
This is why gestures of tokenism are meaningless and end up doing more harm than good in the long run.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 25, 2019 10:38 AM |
I'll tell you one thing R60, John Lewis's place is not presenting at the Academy Awards. Neither were half of the D-List actors trod out there solely based on the color of their skin.
You're making it about race and I keep telling you (and others) it is supposed to be about entertainment. I could go to dinner theater and see half of those actors who appeared on stage tonight. What's so hard to understand they're not A-List Oscar material? If they had Denzel or Halle or any other number of former Black Oscar winners that would have been great but they intentionally filled the bill with any warm black body they could find and it cheapened the awards ceremony.
R62 is confused but that seems to be par for the course in this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 25, 2019 10:40 AM |
I am surprised how many people are devastated that Viggo lost. Parody of Mercury won, lol
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 25, 2019 10:41 AM |
How awful for you R64 you may have had to look at yet another black face...oh the humanity! R65 No they just annoy people like you who would rather things stayed the same with white people having the upper hand, what a shame old boys like you are not running the show anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 25, 2019 10:42 AM |
Here in the UK there's quite a bit of delight going on at Olivia Colman's surprise win. The Academy Awards are getting more coverage than usual over here.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 25, 2019 10:43 AM |
R68 The Hanks are white.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 25, 2019 10:45 AM |
Where were the black stars? No Denzel, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Haille Berry? Why so many B and C listers giving out awards?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 25, 2019 10:46 AM |
That's a good question, R71.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 25, 2019 10:49 AM |
R66 'Any number of former black Oscar winners' ? That number would not amount to much more than Denzel and Halle, in fact I think they are the only lead actor winners, and only a handful in support, this is in itself an example of the white/black imbalance . The Oscar show has been crap for years, I don't think this years has been worse. The Kevin Hart thing threw the still ancient regime into a panic and they have tried in their hamfisted way to make amends, however I appreciate the effort rather than bitch about it, I don't mind seeing black people get a look in, it has been a very long time coming and I'm not upset or threatened or offended by it.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 25, 2019 10:56 AM |
I think we are being horribly myopic here. This year in film was like no other. An all black cast movie was the blockbuster of the year. A movie with three women leads and a Mexican production were arguably the best films of the year. The romantic comedy of the year had an Asian cast. A biopic about a gay/bi singer who died of AIDS, starring a minor actor was a huge smash and made more money than the expected to be huge Hollywood music remake with two huge stars.
To trot out George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks again would have been ridiculously tone deaf. They didn't do anything this year but coast on their celebrity.
This show, like the year in film was not about stars. It was about movies bringing together people from all walks of life. It was clumsy but that was the point of the interracial presenters. It was the point of having an athlete, a politician and a musician present awards
by Anonymous | reply 74 | February 25, 2019 10:58 AM |
if anyone said Pharrell didn't deserve to be there amoung the many many that truly didn't deserve to be there are just wrong. What bothered me about him is the insulting way he dressed.

R74 They didn't do anything this year but coast on their celebrity. " And what Pharell did or Serena ? Nothing, they are black, thats why
by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 25, 2019 11:01 AM |
Excellent observational skills R70, but R64 was referring, in their fevered race baiting way, to the Hanks' 'black grandbaby' as a bargaining chip to score tickets to what R64 considers a show biased towards black people.

1. Oscars do not need a host.
2. I really dislike Lady Gaga

It was not tokenism, asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 25, 2019 11:10 AM |
R90 is correct. Tokenism is the inclusion of one. Pandering is the inclusion of many.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | February 25, 2019 11:12 AM |
Isn't it great R76 that black people are now seen as valid in the same ways as white people and that even extends to triviality like being able to coast on their 'fame' in the same way white C and D listers have been your years, this in turn will promote racial acceptance in more everyday situations, which can only be a good thing, I'm sure you'll join me in in raising a glass to equality in all its forms.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 25, 2019 11:12 AM |
Oh please, R74. People tune into the Oscars to see STARS! Just curious but how many of the presenters could you name on sight? And how many of the presenters do you still recall at this point a few hours after the broadcast? I remember Barbra, Julia, and Charlize because they're stars, damnit!
I can't believe people in this thread are trying to turn what used to be the most glamorous night of the year into a teaching experience.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 25, 2019 11:13 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 25, 2019 11:15 AM |
black people are now seen as valid in the same ways as white people
Black people are seen as insecure people who need validation from Whites and whinge incessantly when they don't receive it. Which has turned the Oscars into a platform for pay-back rather than talent.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 25, 2019 11:18 AM |
And how many years was that situation in reverse R85? About 60/70/80 years worth of white supremecy at the Oscars not enough for you? You like your blacks like Hattie McDaniel, grateful, sat and the back and long dead.

Why is everyone shitting on Glenn? Every actress in Hollywood of a certain age has been looked over in favor of Mary Louise, Glenn is one of them. Mary Louise makes sure to kiss appropriate asses and the public buys the bullshit she sells as acting. The Oscars are political and before Harvey Weinstein came along looking for legitimacy that Mary Louise could give him, Mary Louise's career had stalled. "Harvey Weinstein is god."
You have to kiss ass in Hollywood or just be connected, people are not chosen on their merits very often. Glenn doesn't play the game very well. Neither do other actresses who apparently expect to get by on their abilities.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | February 25, 2019 11:21 AM |
God forbid if the ratings are good. More of the same next year.
Of course they would mention Penny Marshal and Tab Hunter . It is a major disgrace that Oscar winner Dorthy Malone was ignored twice.
I am very disapointed in DL being too kind to Glen Close. I think it is hilarous she dressed like an Oscar and lost. Anyone who loves the movies should be happy the rightful winner Olivia Colman (without the e) won..
On the other hand I thought DL has been too mean to Rami until I saw his obvious phony display of love to the actress who Freddie's beard in the movie. I hate him now. He fell off the stage and broke his Oscar ? God and Freddie is trying to tell you something.
I must admit the presenters were lacking. Someone should of said in honor of Black History month. Although I was very happy Barbra was included even though she cheered on the biggest asshole of the night Spike Lee. Okay maybe tied with Rami.
There wasn't a single winner I wasn't unhappy with. I have to say this to maybe stop the race war and I'm white...

r86 I would suggest you watch Sandra Oh's acceptance speeches this awards season. She mentioned several times how important it has been to be acknowledged and seen. Also if receiving acknowledgement and being seen isn't important or is a sign of weakness, then no one white should have a problem not getting their ego stroked.

When people make fun of the Jewish cheap reaction to OscarsSoWhite and the hamfisted response, they are accused of being racists towards blacks instead of disgusted about Jews.
And Spike Lee is the black filmmakaer Hollywood gives us -- one who embodies every negative black stereotype and who looks like what a Alabama KKK Grand Dragon would envision a black director while making films whose clips always talk about Jews.
Lets see how the Jews misinterpret this post.

For those whining about diversity in Hollywood take your heads out of your asses. The idea is to draw in as many dollars as possible. Black Panther out performed at the box office. Hollywood responds to money. Hollywood is very liberal yes, but money is still dictator in La La land.
So when you see women being favored or minorities or the gay community, that is Hollywood trying to seduce more people to pay attention to it. Movies need all the eyes they can get because TV is kicking their asses. If Hollywood can appeal to more groups more groups will give movies they might have otherwise ignored a look. It's about the money. So calm down white boys.

r99 spoken like someone who knows nothing about acting. Sandra's part is way more difficult to pull off. Part like the one Jodie Comer is playing always get attention, that's a no brainer and I'd argue that it's not even her best work to date.
You like showy parts, fine. Sandra is a technician. Jodie is one too but as I said Villanelle isn't even her best work.

Pray for me, R84 for I am lost in the delusion the Oscars are supposed to be about rewarding the best in their respective fields. Please pray for me so that I will one day see the light and learn to appreciate and savor the day when Jimmy "Dy-no-mite" Walker presents Best Picture because the Academy Awards are no longer based on the content of their talent but the color of their skin.

I sensed the field was split with each best film nominee having strong and vocal fans, but it seems all of these canceled each other out to the point that it was Green Book left standing. But it really could have been any of those films.

r83 Oscars are trying to get a younger audience so you are seeing new faces.
Too much of the complaining and bitching in these threads makes no sense. Do none of you possess critical thinking skills or do you just like hysterically reacting to whatever you see?
Think about money and Hollywood. How does Hollywood stay relevant? How do they bring in more viewers? What are the trends.
Most of you should be embarrassed.

i hate people who whine about the whiners.
It wasn't diversity it was a lot of very new black actors that a minority thought were slighted for Oscars and people with no connection to movies. That silly country girl with her special needs designer would have been torn to shreads by Joan Rivers...
Crazy Rich Asians made a lot of money so maybe a few should be presenters. I finally saw that movie at best it was a decent romantic so so comedy. There was certainly nothing Crazy about it...

It wasn't, but to say that Asians and Hispanics haven't spoken up about the Oscars' lack of inclusion is plain wrong. This year was huge for Asian visibility, even if they didn't start hashtag campaigns about it in the past. Also, a few years ago Hispanics held protests in LA about their lack of visibility. It's not just a black thing, even if they're the most vocal about it.

I did think the line up was over weighted to black performers, but I also saw a number of other racial and ethnic backgrounds represented. This is diversity and inclusion at work. They plainly tried to send a message and accomplish something. It's going to be awkward sometimes and heavy handed and artificial at others but people are learning so while I found it irritating and contrived sometimes I get where they were trying to go and that's not a bad thing.
That said, the thing lacked star power like I've never seen it before. Almost nobody of note or stature seemed to attend.

r106 I have heard Asians talk about not being seen. I have heard about Hispanics not being seen. Check out the press when "Crazy Rich Asians" came out. Or when George Lopez had a show or when "Jane The Virgin" hit the scene. Every group talks about it. Difference is those groups aren't getting shot in the streets. Those groups aren't the American poster child of everything wrong, bad, criminal, undesirable, dangerous. . .
The reason being seen is so important is because the Black community is still fighting for their humanity in a world that was taught by the white media that they are inhuman monsters. That is why being seen is important. That is why they fight for representation. Because the Black community has those in it who are the worst stereotypes of the community but there are also decent good people.
White people have been all over the globe destroying groups of people. Starting wars that lead to the raping and destruction of the most innocent. The level of greed and avarice, hatred, anger and disregard for human life well documented yet white people still enjoy that shiny golden halo as most perfect desirable, wonderful everything that is right and good. Meanwhile holding up Black faces as the destruction of everything "holy" and good.
That is why positive Black representation is important.

I said this on an earlier thread, but it got buried at the end. Of the four major acting categories the award was given to actors who were playing gay characters, all of who were real people, and to our knowledge all of them are straight. Is it time for #oscarssostraight? Do more people need to be like Darren Criss and step back from taking roles away from gay actors? Are our lives so fucked up and full of drama that they are Oscar bait performances? Will we see more gay characters because of this and that visibility is a good thing? Did any of the winners actually acknowledge their charcters’s sexuality and pay homage to their struggle? I kind of feel like Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant might of for their also gay real life counter parts if they had won. Discuss.

Whishaw didn’t know how to play a role that isn’t 100% choreographed. The role wanted the actor to be spontaneous like Freddie. Ben said he didn’t know how to go about that, it’s not for him.
Rami learning piano and his movements etc. are part of why they gave him an Oscar. He even paid for his own movement coach, something not provided
by Anonymous | reply 241 | February 25, 2019 12:41 PM |
People watch the Oscars to see stars. Where the hell were the stars ? Like her or not, when Julia Roberts walked out, that was a star.
I loved how the technical category winners proved the Academy's point that they should be given off camera and presented later. Those people would not shut up.
I preferred when cast members would introduce the clips of Best Picture. Who wants to see these people who have nothing to do with film.
Aside from Adam Lambert and Chris Evans brother seated prominently in front, was there any openly gay representation on stage ?

R205, I'm firmly against people being cast because they resemble a character in real life. I don't mean physical resemblance obviously, I'm talking about the constant PC uproar because a trans person does not win the role of a trans person. Too bad. If there is a non-trans actor who is a better actor they should get the role. The same goes for gay playing straight and straight playing gay and so on.

by Anonymous | reply 287 | February 25, 2019 1:11 PM |
To illustrate the pervasiveness of what I would describe as the “Gay for Pay Problem” — Hollywood’s preference to pay and reward straight actors for playing gay — consider this list of straight or closeted folks who have recently won Oscars for playing gay roles:
In 1994, Tom Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a gay man who is an AIDS patient in Philadelphia.
In 2004, Charlize Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos – who was a lesbian – in Monster.
In 2006, Phillip Seymour Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of gay screenwriter, novelist, and playwright, Truman Capote, in Capote.
In 2009, Sean Penn won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of iconic gay rights activist, Harvey Milk, in Milk.
None of these actors are openly gay.
In fact, no openly gay actor has ever won the Oscar for Best Actor.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | February 25, 2019 1:11 PM |
I thought Lady Gaga was the low point of the night. If anything seemed like heavy-handed pandering, it was toward her.
"ASIB" was crap.

by Anonymous | reply 289 | February 25, 2019 1:12 PM |
It’s a point that Sir Ian McKellen – who is openly gay and who was nominated for a best actor Oscar in 1999 for Gods and Monsters and in 2002 for best supporting actor in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – has often brought up.
“My speech has been in two jackets,” he told The Guardian in 2016. “‘I’m proud to be the first openly gay man to win the Oscar.’ I’ve had to put it back in my pocket twice.”
McKellen continued: “How clever, how clever. What about giving me one for playing a straight man?”
by Anonymous | reply 290 | February 25, 2019 1:12 PM |
One need not look far to see that Hollywood often fails to provide both representation of, and employment to, members of marginalized communities. Movements like #OscarsSoWhite, and continued pushback against cisgender actors playing trans roles, have been increasingly covered in media the past few years. Yet the Gay for Pay Problem has not had the same attention, at least in the recent past, as other ways that Hollywood is willing to tell stories from marginalized groups without hiring marginalized people.

discriminatory casting practices, and deeply held beliefs that LGB actors are less marketable. A 2013 study conducted by UCLA’s LGBTQ+ think tank, Williams Institute, surveyed 5,700 SAG-AFTRA members and created an image of an insidiously homophobic Hollywood.
The study found that 53% of LGBT respondents believed that directors and producers are biased against LGBTQ+ performers, and 31% of non-LGBTQ+ respondents agreed with that assessment. Furthermore, the study discovered that nearly half of lesbian and gay respondents believed casting directors and studio execs saw them as being less marketable for romantic leads, and that more than half of LGB performers who responded “have heard directors and producers make anti-gay comments about actors.”
by Anonymous | reply 295 | February 25, 2019 1:14 PM |
Though one might be tempted to ask whether gay people shouldn’t play straight roles, it’s important to note that the number of notable straight roles per year is limitless, while the same cannot be said for gay roles, especially on the silver screen.

If people really intended to address racism in the industry, they would first have to admit that Latinos are the largest minority in the industry and the most underrepresented ethnic group in film. Yet, how many Latinos apart from Cuaron won an award or presented an award? about 3 ?
If you work in Hollywood long enough, you would know that from catering to sound production, from lighting to boom mikes, and from screenplay to Directing there is a lot of Latino people working in producing all these films yet they are rarely acknowledged. I would say they are now 36-41% of the film industry and growing.
Case in point, when AMPAS came out with their film report, Latinos were almost equaling whites in ticket sales of independent cinema yet the Indie Spirit Awards rarely acknowledge them. They were the most frequent returners to a movie theater besting white majorities. It would be interesting to see when their 2018 report pans out.
I understand what AMPAS is trying to do, but I'm skeptical when I hear that AMPAS is trying to diversify.

I'd love to see more Latino stories produced and highlighted for awards. I think the Independent Spirit Awards had one film... We the Animals I believe it was called. I think a couple Latino stories were nominated for the John Cassavetes Award. One of them won I believe. A couple Latino actors were also nominated.
Unfortunately none of these films were recognized by the Academy.

r338: actually, no, I hate that and am pretty sure that is harming kids in the long run.
What I mean is precisely what I said. EVERYBODY should have the opportunity to access the means to make a film -- meaning, nobody should be denied entry to a film school based on their race, ethnicity, sex, or sexual orientation; nobody should be denied employed at a studio due to their race, ethnicity, sex or sexual orientation, etc. -- then, when they get the chance to make their film, or participate in the making of a film, if it's a quality effort, give them a nomination for an award. Not just because they showed up and not just because they happen to be the right race or sex or ethnicity or sexual orientation.

First, the Oscars.
Second, this thread.
Except for the Glenn Close jokes and the notes on how distorted the show and awards are.
The "Biggest Historical Victim Awards" with confusion about the basis of the Oscars, first and foremost: MOVIEMAKERS DOING THEIR BEST TO SELL MORE TICKETS. That's why they were founded, adding some cachet to the grimy business, and for the studios to make more money. Turning it into historically-underrepresented-populations-wearing-borrowed-shit-while-acting-out-and-demanding-their-rights doesn't do much for movies, viewers, human rights or the quality of filmmaking.

r351, to a certain extent, yes. Historically speaking, by that I mean recorded History and culture, Latinos are not recognized as part of American culture. When president Hoover removed Hispanic achievements from school textbooks, they were practically erased from American history forever. You have entire generations of people that only view white and black people as the creators and sole protagonists of American culture. That type of damage is almost irreversible. It’s history that is lost forever and so is their importance and acknowledgement.
AMPAS trying to diversify is a noble step, but in reality is kind of window dressing to be honest.

WTF has Glenn done that she lost? This is the first time since Julie Christie in 2007 that an actress had won the Golden Globe and SAG then lost Oscar. I was sure she was going to win.
I'm in the UK and just saw the clip, she really gave a dignified but honest response which I'm glad about. It must have been hurtful and humiliating. I loved Melissa McCarthy's response - her open-mouthed shock. Nothing against Olivia who is terrific, I just feel Glenn did a sterling job in her movie and would have been a very worthy winner.
by Anonymous | reply 387 | February 25, 2019 3:25 PM |
Glenn was in a movie that so few people saw that she could not get enough Academy voters to lie that they watched it and were able to appraise her performance. That IMO is what sank her.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | February 25, 2019 3:27 PM |

Giving it to Colman instead, in what was category fraud and should have been in supporting.
by Anonymous | reply 389 | February 25, 2019 3:27 PM |

"Everybody's going on about black, brown, white, blah, blah, blah when the only color that matters in Hollywood is green. If there is an audience for films featuring minorities the studios will increase the output."
Painfully slowly. Okay, "Crazy Rich Asians" made money, and there hasn't been a major studio film with a mostly-Asian cast since what - "The Last Emperor"? So... the studios greenlight a few scripts starring more Asians, since there "CRA" made money, and that means most of those scripts don't get made and maybe one or two get made in, what... 2-5 years. And the low-budget "Love, Simon" made a profit, so maybe another gay studio film will be released in 2-5 years.
The reality is that studio executives are chickenshits, they're comfortable pandering to the white male demographic that likes superheroes, and don't feel they have the fingers on the pulse of any other market, so they're hesitant to give a budget to anything out of their comfort zone - anything too gay, too female, too colorful, etc. I don't see changes happening fast, because film production is such a slow process, and because as long as white men dominate movie studio decision-making, they're going to keep thinking that anything other than movies about white superheroes is risky and different, and maybe they can take a chance every couple of years. But it will NOT OCCUR TO THEM to regularly put out movies about gay people, or Hispanics, or Asians, etc. Pandering at the Oscars doesn't mean real change.
by Anonymous | reply 391 | February 25, 2019 3:29 PM |
If you rank the best actress nominees for memorable though, or distinct performances or quirky performances... Glenn comes last or close to it. Of the five, Olivia Coleman and Melissa McCarthy were distinct... Gaga was maybe in the middle for emerging and surprising... at the bottom you've got Roma girl and Glenn, who did an excellent job in a fairly cliched vehicle. McCarthy nailed that damaged creature who in her desperation did something that seemed like a good bad idea at the time and then lost control of it. Coleman made a fat, dumpy, dumb character shine... you liked Queen Anne, at least I did. She owned her screen time. Glenn was earnest, proficient, moving and consistent with a Glenn Close performance. I haven't seen Roma or Star.

I don’t understand it. Love Regina and Mahershala and happy for them, but I question it when the Academy pats itself on the back when they pander. They did this with Sidney Poitier when they gave him an Oscar for that tripe LILIES OF THE FIELD. Ignoring the superb work by Angela Bassett, but gifting Halle Berry for her mediocrity. It’s wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 393 | February 25, 2019 3:30 PM |
I don't disagree r390, but the problem is that Coleman was not in the leading female role in the movie. I think she was so good in her supporting role, people just decided to designate it as a leading role.

by Anonymous | reply 396 | February 25, 2019 3:35 PM |
Was there a leading role in The Favourite? You could argue not. But the story revolved around Coleman's character and she had enough screen time to be lead. I think the story was really shared equally, with Coleman's character at the centre yet not wholly the protagonist.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | February 25, 2019 3:35 PM |
We've had category fraud conversations non stop this Oscar season. People argue that Mahershala's lead while others argue that he doesn't appear until half an hour into the film and supports Viggo's growth. People argue that Olivia's lead since the drama revolves around everyone attempting to be her main support, whereas others argue that since Emma Stone has the most screen time and most obvious arc, she's the lead.
I can see where everyone's coming from, but what I'm tired of is how endlessly back and forth these conversations go. Doesn't matter though. The actors won in their respective categories and this wouldn't be the first time fraud has happened. And it certainly won't be the last.

Yes, Mahershala was committing category fraud. That's why it's particularly galling that Richard E. Grant, giving a fantastic performance in a genuine supporting role, lost.
And I'd argue that all three of the ladies are the leads in The Favourite, but if I were pinned down to one whose character's path through the film is central to the story, then it was Emma Stone who was the lead.

Ellen Page has been consistently vocal about Hollywood’s preference to cast straight actors in LGB roles. Page discussed the issue when she played a leading lesbian role in 2015’s Freeheld.
“There was something about being out, getting to play a gay character, and getting to play a woman who is so inspiring to me — it was such an amazing experience for me,” she said in an interview for TIME.
Page called it “borderline offensive” for straight actors to be called ‘brave’ for playing LGB roles, “I’m never going to be considered brave for playing a straight person, and nor should I be."
by Anonymous | reply 423 | February 25, 2019 4:20 PM |
Tu agrees that applauding straight actors for playing gay roles suggests an inherent negativity attached to LGB character and storylines.
“I think it’s usually because we’re telling a queer person’s life as some sort of hardship,” Tu says. “Our default is to think that everyone is straight, and so casting a straight person to play a queer role is like they’re stretching their acting muscles to play such hardship.”
Her co-host, Tobin Low, points out how movie marketing plays off of this implicit homophobia.
“Nowadays the way movies are promoted, they want to highlight actors for how ‘brave’ or ‘empathetic’ they are for taking on this role,” Low says. “I am not a Hollywood insider, but as far as I can tell there’s something like this person is ‘threatening’ the future of their career by playing an LGBTQ character.”
by Anonymous | reply 424 | February 25, 2019 4:22 PM |
It’s instructive to read about how well-known, straight actors themselves describe the environment for LGB performers in Hollywood, as they too confirm the perception that such actors actively endanger their careers by being honest about their sexuality.

I know a continent here can't stand that BR wasn't closer to Cruising, but in the end it was a feel good movie and nostalgic. People enjoyed it. Hollywood probably enjoyed it (sleazy Sling notwithstanding.). Rami wasn't the best actor of the year but I can see how he won it. It was an evocative performance.

Is Glenn disliked in the same manner that Lauren Bacall was when she was the sentimental , career acknowledgement award favourite and didn't win? Close's status as a film great ( of sorts ) is really only based on a couple of films early in her movie career, she has done little of note for a long time .The Wife is a fairly muted affair but should have been good enough for a win for someone who's been around a while unrewarded and beloved, it seems Close isn't the latter.

Precisely, r431; what I think critics forget about the phenomenon of Bohemian Rhapsody is that a movie featuring two men kissing & falling in love and a montage of visits to leather bars was marketed as a "family-friendly" movie and grossed nearly $900 million worldwide. I honestly never thought I'd see such a thing happen.

Really feel sorry for Glenn. You can feel she really did expect to finally get that Oscar. She’s so ready to act surprised as the winner is announced but then that British biatch stole her thunder. And that biatch even said she expected Glenn to get it , adding to her embarrassment.
Not Glenn’s fault, she was made to believe she has it in the bag. And damn she really deserved to win imho.

R349 Roma is not a film about Latinos, it is a film about Mexicans and more importantly indigenous people of Mexico. Latinos or Latinx are people of Latin American descendents living in the USA. I think people are underestimating how much love there was for The Favourite, not that Glenn is hated. The Fave tied for having the most noms of any film last year in a variety of above the line and below the line categories— which means a lot of people saw it and a lot of people liked it. Obviously not enough to win the other nine categories it was in, but it’s one of those films that was probably second place for many, many voters.

Agree about THE FAVOURITE. It was an entertaining and entertaining film that combined comedy and drama flawlessly. Olivia Colman is a very skilled actress, and I believe she could give M a run for her money at any time. Her win was totally justified, in a role where she drops this line: "I like when she puts her tongue in me."
Melissa McCarthy was another winner, even though she didn't take an Oscar home. I think this performance has shown she has the acting chops for better dramatic roles, and she can finally move away from all those shitty comedies.
The Academy should reset the nominations bar at FIVE in all categories, ESPECIALLY Best Picture. It's like the Democratic primary - too many contenders fractures the vote and allows a mediocre choice to slip through the cracks. If there's a "snub", so be it. Movies are so ghastly these days it's hard to come up with five serious contenders, much less make room to cram in some politically correct/pandering choices.
Glenn should take heart - her heyday is long past, and she should have been satisfied with just the nomination at this late stage. Especially in such a blah movie. Lot of great actors have never won an Oscar - Malkovich, who was so great with her in DANGEROUS LIASIONS, doesn't have one, neither does Cary Grant, Hitchcock, etc etc. Sadly, her mistake was being talked into wearing that gold getup with the cape. Willem Dafoe is a GREAT actor and doesn't have one - he was great in a terrific IFC film called THE FLORIDA PROJECT a year or two go. But these days a lot of great performances on indie films are never even noticed, much less rewarded. (although he did bag a supporting actor nom for FLORIDA PROJECT).
And FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, the Academy should pass a rule that A STAR IS BORN can never, EVER be remade again! Even a Lego version!!!
That's it, I'm exhausted. Congratulations, Olivia Colman; you're at the top of your game. And Melissa McCarthy - pick and choose carefully from her on out - your star is rising.

R415, that's called "distinction without a difference."
I don't mind them queers, I just don't want them living next to me, and I don't want to see them holding hands.
I have no problem with blacks, I just don't think they should be a major part of my white movie-awards show.
They are American citizens in the entertainment business; period. I could argue that the majority of male actors are 'mos, and the cheesy-ass "Bohemian Rhapsody" was pandering at its best. The obsession with skin colour and race among Americans is unbelievable. You are all quick to condemn right-wingers like Roseanne Barr and Donald Trump for racism, yet I have never read more sit-in-the-back-of-the-bus sentiments on apparently "liberal" DL like I have in these Oscar threads.
And when you guys have nothing to say, or break away from the hive mentality, you bleat "Okay Boris. Another Russian troll." Excellent minds at work here.

And where do they change? I know it sounds stupid but with LA traffic do they nonetheless all wait for their SUVs to come around, go back home or to the hotel, change and restyle and then head out again? What time do the parties start?

The BoRhap sound awards are a complete joke - the general Academy members don’t know anything about those categories. The Editing one is for Best Salvage Job given the flawed production and lack of stewardship.
Malek’s win is perplexing. Bradley Cooper did his own singing, take after take, played his own guitar, recorded it all live and created a wholly believable Southern rock superstar character who was a bigger star than Lady Gaga (and landed a No. 1 record around the world for it) as well as wrote, directed and produced his film and they give it to Malek who mimed along to Freddie Mercury records and pranced around the set - he didn’t even have any extended emotional dramatic scenes. Cooper’s film - filled with original music, some of which he wrote - grossed $420M with original musical materials and characters. That’s quite an accomplishment.
It’s no surprise the Queen grossed $780M - so did Mamma Mia!
by Anonymous | reply 485 | February 25, 2019 7:12 PM |
There's a rumor going around that GaGa is the reason Olivia Colman won. GaGa met with the Academy's Board of Governors late last week and turned down the Best Actress Academy Award. She said that she was good with winning Best Song. However, if Olivia Colman did not win Best Actress, GaGa would never have anything to do with the Academy Awards for the rest of her career. They acquiesced and Olivia Colman won for THE FAVOURITE. Olivia Colma has GaGa to thank for her Academy Award.

I am annoyed by stars who feel entitled to an Oscar, as if they are owed. Not only Spike, but Ian. There is so much more that goes into the voting process. I gasped when Close lost, though I am a huge fan of Colman. If you look at her and the over winning Streep I can't help feeling Close is punished for not playing the game or at least helping to cover it up. Everyone knows about HW and Streep and she played the clueless fool where Close admitted she had heard rumors. I've seen interviews where based on having been in a cult Close says she understands why some of the women froze or did what was demanded of them. She was so literate, articulate, and able to explain the victimization. I dont think some segments view her as a team player, unlike Streep.

Whether Rocketman will earn nominations will depend on the end product, don't you think? It'swon't be considered a flop if it makes profit, but it won't come near to BR probably. Still the success of BR will help it making more money as people will want to repeat the positive experience of watching the former.

There was a gorgeous hunk/model sitting in the audience that was caught on camera for a couple of seconds. Did anyone else notice him? Who is he?

Thoughts:
No problem with who won what--but probably because I didn't see most of the films. I was happy when "Bao" won for animated short. I think it's brilliantly twisted for an obligatorily heartwarming Pixar film.
Spike Lee's still a brat after all these years.
The wins weren't pandering, but the whole presenter thing was--it got to be a joke. We were trying to figure out who was who and what possible connection there was to film. Yes, Serena Williams is famous, but not for anything to do with film. Okay with John L. Lewis--it's like RBG, ancient-icon status, and Pharrell--"Happiness" is better known than the Minions film it came from.
Shorter was better and didn't miss the host, though it got kind of tedious in the middle.
Gushy GaGa, so grateful she didn't win best actress, just so she didn't do a second gushy speech. If I were an Academy member I would have a bias for the Brits just because, as a group, they know how to give an acceptance speech. Even Olivia, who didn't expect to win and kind of went all over the place, had that British sense of occasion.
Sorry Glenn, but you're in good company: Sigourney, Michelle, Willem, Amy, Cary, Richard . . . skip the gold cape next time. And remember, it's the roles not the award that people remember. I'd rather have Cary Grant's career over what'shername--oh, right, Luise Rainier's.

Marilyn should have been nominated supporting for Some Like It Hot.

I love Olivia Colman. I feel bad for Glenn but very happy for Olivia.

On what planet is Marilyn supporting in Some Like it Hot??
by Anonymous | reply 551 | February 25, 2019 9:30 PM |
R551 In a planet that Mahershala Ali and Weisz and Stone are nominated at supporting category.

They’re all supporting

Colman did ZERO campaigning and rightfully won!
by Anonymous | reply 556 | February 25, 2019 9:41 PM |
Colman was the center of it all. The lead.
by Anonymous | reply 557 | February 25, 2019 9:41 PM |
The story arc depended on Emma Stone but Olivia was the beating heart of the film.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | February 25, 2019 9:44 PM |
^^^ She already had the lead actress Oscar, she want one in the other category too.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | February 25, 2019 9:50 PM |
Colman did ZERO campaigning and rightfully won!
I was thinking about that earlier— she really did not campaign as she was off filming The Criwn for most of the season. That’s pretty unprecedented of late. Who’s the last winner prior to Colman that won without campaigning? Even DDL shows up to the award shows, and Ledger was well, dead.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | February 25, 2019 9:58 PM |
It would be nice if Weisz and Stone are okay with being shuffled off into the supporting category when they had co-lead roles, and guaranteed a loss in that because they cancelled each other out.
I mean, they've both got Oscars of their own sitting on the mantlepiece, surely they're okay with category fraud and losing last night?
Sure they are...

Pathetic.

Put me down in the "no host needed" column. It saved at least twenty minutes, and we didn't have to endure sending out for pizza, taking selfies, having embarrassing interviews with people sitting in aisle seats, or stupid video hookups.
Also I read today that Glenn's golden frock weighed FORTY TWO POUNDS!!

by Anonymous | reply 572 | February 26, 2019 4:17 AM |
Glenn must be disappointed but there are a ton of performers who never even got 1 Oscar nomination and deserved one.
I'm thinking of Alan Rickman. He was always excellent in every role and no one was ever out campaigning for him to get an Oscar.

Disappointed that Queen + Adam did not get more time. But there is rumor now they will do next yest’s Super Bowl.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | February 26, 2019 4:59 AM |
I would have loved to have seen Rickman in Dangerous Liaisons. He managed to make dreary Colonel Brandon sexy in Sense and Sensibility, I'd love to have seen what he did with an actual seducer. Anyone know why he wasn't used in either filmed version?
by Anonymous | reply 575 | February 26, 2019 5:06 AM |
^^^ He and Lindsey Duncan were magnificent on the stage, one of the most transcendent nights of theatre I have attended. And the wonderful reveal of the highboy becoming a guillotine at the end was a great twist. Remember there were three versions of it, and he wasn’t in Cruel Intentions either! I think they just weren’t bankable enough stars for Hollywood.

by Anonymous | reply 577 | February 26, 2019 5:24 AM |
R575-Sadly, I think they had wanted an actor who had done film and up to that point, Rickman had only done British TV. He did a similar type of Valmont character in a film called Closet Land - he did a great job in that even though the film really wasn't that good.

r575
An interesting footnote to Dangerous Liasions is Glenn was hired with Kelly McGillis and Kevin (molester) Spacey to take over from Rickman and Duncan in the Broadway cast when the British Visa's expired. The producers decided to close the show rather than put in an American cast because of poor box office.
About 2 months later Fatal Attraction opened and Glenn was the most talked about woman in the country. Dumb move. People would have come to see her. She was able to then get the movie though (with Kelly McGillis too but then Pauline Kael convinced Stephen Frears to fire her and get Michelle Pfieiffer.)

Has someone mentioned how off the people calling the Globes irrelevant were? One of their picks won BP, the other won the most Oscars of the night. And obviously they started Rami's triumph, which no one disagreed with except the Critic's Choice - which chose the GG's other best actor pick. Ha! The Golden Globes can't be taken seriously anymore, they said.

R589 Yeah, many of those Golden Globe winners managed to stick around 'til the big show. We probably should have seen Green Book coming as well considering the PGA win. In retrospect there are many reasons to see why it'd win. I think we were just hoping that the big show would make a more interesting decision.
