Angie Dickinson on #MeToo - "It's all out of proportion"

Angie Dickinson at age 87 gives a rare interview with CBS Sunday Morning. In the intro she says "I've been a lucky bitch"

Anyways back to #MeToo

When asked what she thinks of the #MeToo movement, she said, "I hate it. It's all out of proportion, like my [poker] hand. I say: an open robe is not a rape. Listen, I'm sure men misbehaved. But I wasn't there."

They must be glad that they didn't have to live through today's P.C. bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 3February 24, 2019 3:03 PM

I love her and she's right.

Marginal talents like Gweneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence would have never been cast in anything.

Boo Hoo. They made a choice. Period.

Shut up.

by Anonymousreply 4February 24, 2019 3:10 PM

I have always like Angie and agree with her. What she said was carefully stated and I hope everyone doesnt jump all over her. However, she was long an insider and treated as one of the boys. So, there is that too.

by Anonymousreply 5February 24, 2019 3:14 PM

Too bad about the bag-lady hair and makeup, other than that she looks very good for her age.

by Anonymousreply 6February 24, 2019 3:17 PM

Loved this piece this AM. And the poker game she played with Mo throughout the interview. I agree with her also.

by Anonymousreply 7February 24, 2019 3:17 PM

That's Miss Angie Dickinson, OP.

by Anonymousreply 8February 24, 2019 3:18 PM

Watched it, and loved it. She was fantastic, but lied about the JFK affair...you could see it in her eyes. I also agreed with her comments on #MeToo.

by Anonymousreply 9February 24, 2019 3:28 PM

r3 Umm ... we're living through it now.

by Anonymousreply 10February 24, 2019 3:41 PM

Oh, please! She wouldn't have had a career without being #MeTooed on every casting couch in Hollywood.

She spread her legs for EVERYONE -- even JFK on a private plane.

by Anonymousreply 11February 24, 2019 3:42 PM

I LOVE YOU, ANGIE!

by Anonymousreply 12February 24, 2019 3:46 PM

She was a married woman throughout most of her Hollywood career ... her second husband being an entertainment industry big wig at that, from 1965-1981.

This may have given her a slightly different experience than others. You can't compare what happens to Mrs. Burt Bacharach to what happens to a starlet like Rose M.

by Anonymousreply 13February 24, 2019 3:46 PM

I want all old people to sew their mouths shut.

by Anonymousreply 14February 24, 2019 3:54 PM

Septuagenerians - still nostalgic for the days when they had to suck cock and spread their legs for mere sustenance.

by Anonymousreply 15February 24, 2019 3:59 PM

Has she ever played mom to Ellen Barkiin?

by Anonymousreply 16February 24, 2019 4:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 17February 24, 2019 4:08 PM

R14, it has ever been so and I assume you will stop talking at 40? Younger people want and need the opportunity to repeat the mistakes of the old folks.

by Anonymousreply 18February 24, 2019 4:08 PM

Diane

Sorry - got excited at the prospect.

by Anonymousreply 19February 24, 2019 4:09 PM

Uh, most of these guys went much farther than just flashing someone in a bath robe. It sounds like she hasn't paid much attention to the stories in the news and is making a straw man argument.

Typical that some of the MRA types here would agree with her.

by Anonymousreply 20February 24, 2019 4:11 PM

"What's wrong with getting raped a little for a part? Especially if it's the goddamned LEAD!"

by Anonymousreply 21February 24, 2019 4:11 PM

Yes, it seems strange that moral puritanism, which I typically associated with right wing types, have been completely appropriated by the left. The vast majority didn't care about Bill Clinton's infidelity and from all accounts, they care even less about Trump's admitted infidelity now. This sexual puritanism is a movement that has been mostly manufactured and used to push an agenda.

by Anonymousreply 23February 24, 2019 4:31 PM

wut?

by Anonymousreply 24February 24, 2019 4:32 PM

She doesn’t look like an airhead in the op,s clip, r22, she is articulate and says no more than she wants to say, while implying a lot. She also looks incredible for 87, but couldn’t they just fixed her hair?

by Anonymousreply 25February 24, 2019 4:35 PM

Exactly r21. This whole, “well I got fingered in my trailer every day by the producer and I survived and didn’t get a payoff, why can’t other people just put up with it” attitude of these old idiots is draining. They’re too fucking stupid to realize they shouldn’t have had to put up with it either.

by Anonymousreply 26February 24, 2019 4:55 PM

I don't have an issue with chronically predatory and abusive types being confronted for their behavior. Perhaps our society will emerge healthier in some ways. I do believe that the damage that unwanted come ons and say, a groping does to the psyche has become hugely exagerrated by the media and culture. We've gone from "don't ever talk about it " to "You're life is ruined forever because someone fondled you! ". We don't have to go back to the former to find the latter a bit ridiculous. I think there is a spectrum of severity to the most serious type of sex abuse to the type of stuff that a healthy individual should be able to get over. I also believe that adults have should take ownership of their own sex lives and choices rather than just blabbering on about "power imbalances ".

A. Dickinson just loves the old boys' club. Doesn't she? My god, she has profited from her continued loyalty to that club, which requires a disloyalty toward women, especially those who challenge the old boys.

I don't think most people mind that Ms. Dickinson was herself whorish. It's that she doesn't have much of an honest platform from which to speak re: sexual harrasment in this day and age, considering her own business/casting couch practices.

by Anonymousreply 55February 24, 2019 6:09 PM

No R42,its more like we are old enough to understand that words are just that, words.Only a weak minded sniveling shit would get all ptsd over someone calling them a name. You think things are any better now than 40 years ago ? Really ? The hate and contempt was there then and still is very much here now. You cant change human nature,no matter how much you cry and scream. Some people are going to hate gays no matter what. How YOU handle it and overcome it is all on your ass. You young bitches have no idea what it was like in the 60s-70s ,yet your generation is now trying to judge our generation for how we handled it then. Like any of that shit matters in the here and now.

by Anonymousreply 56February 24, 2019 6:10 PM

Angie got to enjoy the gorgeous Burt Bachrach and I didn't!

by Anonymousreply 57February 24, 2019 6:10 PM

She was born and lived in an age in which everyone sexualized attractive women and just expected that to be part of the woman’s life — that she’d be treated like a sex object.

Her entire career was built on that. So she’s basically saying it’s no big deal.

I’m of two kinds about that. On the one hand, women should not be treated as sex objects but as human beings with the same respect everyone else is entitled to. On the other hand, certain women DO in fact build their careers around being sex objects so is it really shocking they’re treated that way?

by Anonymousreply 58February 24, 2019 6:11 PM

You know how people thought it was OK to refer to blacks as "boy" when they didn't know any better? This woman is no different. People are supposed to evolve over time. Yes, I think some aspects of the #metoo movement have gone too far (like that asshole ex-gf of Chris Hardwick or that idiot who went out with Aziz Ansari), but it doesn't mean women over the years haven't had their lives and careers destroyed by men through endless harassment or rape, and to dismiss it because of a few idiots and because she was probably some self-absorbed asshole who lacks empathy for others, doesn't make her right.

Blaming "pc" culture as a gay person who no doubt whines about gay jokes makes you a fucking hypocrite.

by Anonymousreply 59February 24, 2019 6:11 PM

[quote]You cant change human nature,no matter how much you cry and scream. Some people are going to hate gays no matter what. How YOU handle it and overcome it is all on your ass.

A) I don't give a fuck what they "think in their hearts" (what an expression!), if they just leave me the fuck alone to live my life.

B) You are wrong. Just look at attitudes towards Gay Marriage. They are very different now than they were only a decade ago. Yes, some people still hate gay people, but they are a smaller % of the country.

An open robe means plenty when it's your boss's. An open robe means plenty when it's Dustin Hoffman's and he's opening it up to his teenage daughter's school friend, etc.

R23, this discussion is over your head.

[quote]She spread her legs for EVERYONE -- even JFK on a private plane.

She made choices and she's not crying about those choices now. That's the problem. You can't make a choice, regret the choice, and then ask for a do-over where you take none of the responsibility and expect to be applauded for it. That's the problem with women. They turned fucking into a transactional act and now they want to play takesie backsies.

by Anonymousreply 89February 24, 2019 7:31 PM

I suspect lots of women were assaulted and raped. And while I do not consider myself a prude I do not want to be subjected to a man flashing his penis while discussing a job. As always men are able to keep women down because there is always a certain percentage of women that will support it.

by Anonymousreply 90February 24, 2019 7:47 PM

R89, you think very highly of her, don't you? She didn't make any choices, the men made them for her, you get it now?

In today's climate women have started seeing that they should be able to make their own choices , while the men still think they have to make them for them. The women do not agree, that's where the conflict starts

by Anonymousreply 91February 24, 2019 7:48 PM

So many of these posts seem to be from fish

by Anonymousreply 92February 24, 2019 7:51 PM

Such prudes on here. I took her “open robe” comment to mean that the actresses had a choice about sleeping their way to the top. Angie contends they did what they wanted to advance their career, so no complaining after (Goop!) Suck Harvey Weinstein’s dick for a huge career? Where do I sign up?

by Anonymousreply 93February 24, 2019 7:56 PM

[quote] In today's climate women have started seeing that they should be able to make their own choices , while the men still think they have to make them for them.

I don't think that's true in today's climate. In Hollywood, men can't really win. If they tell stories about female empowerment, they are accused of pandering. If they tell stories from the male persepective, they are being exclusionary. Yet no one has any problem of females writing for a male perspective, whether they are depicted as gay or straight. Also, women and gay men are more likely to be pitted against each other in their respective industries where they both dominate.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[quote]“First we get rid of the baby fat,” said the little man seated behind the wide desk. “Then new hair. Teach you to belt a song, and some decent dancing.” . . .

[quote]Best known as producer of the blockbusting The Wizard of Oz, Freed was rumored in some adult circles to have an adventuresome casting couch. At the time I knew none of this, not would I have recognized such furniture even when sitting on one. To visit an executive of such stature was enough to send my spirits soaring.

[quote]“I have something made for just you,” he continued, fumbling in his lap. “You’ll be my new star!” That phrase had last been used when I was three years old in Kid in Hollywood [one of Temple’s early shorts].

[quote]Obviously, Freed did not believe in preliminaries. With his face gaped in a smile, he stood up abruptly and executed a bizarre flourish of clothing. Having thought of him as a producer rather than an exhibitor, I sat bolt upright . . . Not twelve years old, I still had little appreciation for masculine versatility and so dramatic was the leap between schoolgirl speculation and Freed’s bedazzling exposure that I reacted with nervous laughter.

[quote]Disdain or terror he might have expected, but not the insult of humor.

by Anonymousreply 114February 25, 2019 7:49 PM

She went to Immaculate Heart, so I'm guessing Catholic.

by Anonymousreply 115February 25, 2019 9:10 PM

Her wiki page says she's German .... but i want to SEE THE RECEIPTS!

by Anonymousreply 116February 25, 2019 9:35 PM

R116 I've seen Germans with her features and complexion. Not all Germans are pale blonds with blue eyes.

by Anonymousreply 117February 25, 2019 9:50 PM

It's hard to get any sort of nuanced opinion from her saying eight words about it.

by Anonymousreply 118February 25, 2019 10:02 PM

The whole interview was sad.

Miss Angie was a *working* actress for 55 years, which is not bad at all. She beat Madonna’s record by 54 years and 6 months.

by Anonymousreply 120February 25, 2019 11:57 PM

We would love to meet her and play poker with her! (the card game)

BTW, we have a witness that she boned JFK.

by Anonymousreply 121February 26, 2019 9:20 AM

She's the kind of woman who puts men first, accommodates their moods and turns a blind eye the their excesses , in other words a real cocksucker and emblematic of 'the good old days' the rose-tinted spec wearing, old pricks of DL drool over and want inflicted on us again today.

by Anonymousreply 122February 26, 2019 10:38 AM

She looks Italian to me. Even more Italian than Monica Vitti.

by Anonymousreply 123February 26, 2019 11:51 AM

Her performance in Dressed To Kill was sublime.

by Anonymousreply 124February 26, 2019 2:24 PM

Attractive women like Angie who have benefitted immensely from sexism, always proudly stand up to defend men.

by Anonymousreply 125February 26, 2019 2:32 PM

I was a kid living in Boston and went to the opening of the JFK library. I said hello and asked for an autograph.

She was very kind. I don't it the autograph anymore, but I'll always remember how sweet she was.

by Anonymousreply 126February 26, 2019 2:38 PM

R126 Did they do the reenactment of Angie being fucked by JFK with clay or wax figures?

by Anonymousreply 127February 26, 2019 2:41 PM

I like Angie, but she was basically a jump off for the Rat Pack. #metoo is real.

by Anonymousreply 128February 26, 2019 3:09 PM

R123, Angie is of German extraction. Her family name is Brown, Anglicized from Braun.

by Anonymousreply 129February 26, 2019 3:10 PM

I don't know how De Palma did it, but he really did get a brilliant performance out of her in Dressed to Kill. I do remember there being Oscar talk, but the studio, Filmways, was too cheap for a campaign. I think they ended up folding a few years later anyway. Angie says so much without saying very much at all in the film and, after her death, her spirit lingers over the rest of the film. It's one of the few times where the death of someone in a "slasher" movie or thriller really has an impact. I remember being so upset when she checked out early. I think it had the same impact on me that Psycho must have had on audiences in the 60's (I already knew about the shower scene before I saw that film as a kid, so the shock was lost on me).

Why Angie walked out on "This Is Your Life".

Miss Angie Dickinson didn't put men first. She was devoted to her daughter Nikki, who was disabled. I believe she had another dependant, a sister, I think. Angie took care of her own.

I don't support her metoo summation. All this broad brushstrokes characterisation is counterproductive.

The worst are those that were professionally "managed" by their husbands.

Ann-Margret was always cooing, "When a man tells me I'm sexy, it's the ultimate compliment he can give me."
