The Devil Wears Prada

13 years later and it's still one of my favorite Meryl films. What are your thoughts?

by Anonymousreply 42February 27, 2019 10:05 AM

M was just playing herself.

by Anonymousreply 1February 24, 2019 4:06 AM

It's half a good movie. If it is on a movie channel I might record it and FF through half the film, particularly the parts with her jerk boyfriend.

Really good editing in the transformation scene. Her contract allowed her to keep all the wardrobe.

The scenes with Andrea and her friends and boyfriend drag the movie down.

by Anonymousreply 3February 24, 2019 6:30 AM

The movie really has its moments but does drag a lot because of establishing these two different worlds that clash.

by Anonymousreply 4February 24, 2019 6:37 AM

It's a very good movie and one of Meryl's best performances.

by Anonymousreply 5February 24, 2019 6:06 PM

To me, it's one of Meryl's last truly great performances. She doesn't get hammy like she did in Ausage and I love how he entire film keeps Miranda mostly a mystery.

Agree with r3, Andrea's friends were fucking annoying. I would have ditched them for Miranda's glamorous lifestyle, too.

by Anonymousreply 6February 24, 2019 6:09 PM

Love Devil Wears Prada! Saw it 3 times in the theater. Hated Andy's friends tho.

I do love Miranda's line "Everybody wants to be us".

The bitch spoke the truth!

by Anonymousreply 8February 24, 2019 6:16 PM

The coats and purses montage is fantastic. Meryl is totally believable in this role in a way that she hasn't been since, including as Margaret Thatcher.

by Anonymousreply 9February 24, 2019 6:18 PM

I prefer the PORNO version of The Devil Wears Prada. THE DEVIL WEARS NADA!

by Anonymousreply 10February 24, 2019 7:21 PM

It was good fun but it's hardly a classic.

As an aside, Anna Paquin's new television series Flack is trying very hard to be the new Devil Wears Prada.

by Anonymousreply 11February 24, 2019 7:25 PM

I thought it was too serious. It desperately needed some more comedy.

by Anonymousreply 12February 24, 2019 7:56 PM

Meryl was great without being too Meryl-y. Emily Blunt is the funniest thing about this movie. It’s worth it’s weight in gold for the clothes alone. Oh, and AnnE, as always, is a bug-eyed, giant toothed annoyance.

by Anonymousreply 13February 24, 2019 7:59 PM

R13- The original NYT review of the movie praised Meryl Streep's and Emily Blunt's performance but couldn't stand SUNNY, CROSSEYED girl from Brooklyn.

by Anonymousreply 14February 24, 2019 8:01 PM

Streep, Tucci and Blunt are all excellent, but the film overall is cheesy and heavy-handed. The dramatic tension of some supposed plotting around Miranda’s character felt so stilted and soapy, implausible. Just dumb, blech.

by Anonymousreply 15February 24, 2019 8:02 PM

Meryl actually looks GOOD in this movie. She is put in clothes that are almost the exact opposite of her usual outfits that she for some unfathomable reasons chooses to wear. She has a horrid dress sense on her own.

by Anonymousreply 16February 24, 2019 8:16 PM

I watched the film for the first time a few years ago (Forgive me DL) and it was like watching my own life. My first job in my industry was a nightmare (though without that level of influence/perks) and almost 10 years later, I still avoid my old bosses.

by Anonymousreply 17February 24, 2019 8:39 PM

Love it. M and AnnE and Stanley are all great, but Emily kinda steals the show. She's amazing. And Adrian is SO pretty...

by Anonymousreply 18February 24, 2019 9:01 PM

I enjoyed the first episode of Flack, r11 - but you are right! This time it’s Sophie Okanedo as the Anna Wintour/Meryl character and another actress playing a carbon copy of Emily Blunt. Anna Pacquin is the weak link, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 19February 24, 2019 9:08 PM

Anne was not bad in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 20February 24, 2019 9:10 PM

Thanks for the Flack recommendations. Watched the first episode and now I'm hooked. The blonde colleage is such a hilarious cold bitch.

by Anonymousreply 21February 24, 2019 9:34 PM

I thought Emily was great in this movie. I still feel she hasn't reached her full potential since this movie.

by Anonymousreply 22February 24, 2019 11:56 PM

R22 - Have you seen Loopper?

by Anonymousreply 23February 26, 2019 2:32 AM

It's OK. I think it has classic status on Datalounge because so many queens here wish they could deliver the speech about the belt someday to someone. If it weren't for that one bitchy scene, the film would not be beloved as it is.

by Anonymousreply 24February 26, 2019 2:36 AM

Disagree R24. I think it very authentically portrays a job that asks EVERYTHING from you and spits you out. The first time I watched it, I FELT it.

by Anonymousreply 25February 26, 2019 8:03 AM

Is there a musical? Can I audition? Please call my agent.

by Anonymousreply 26February 26, 2019 8:10 AM

You still have one, R26? Are you sure?

by Anonymousreply 27February 26, 2019 8:12 AM

Andrea and her boyfriend and friend circle were the epitome of a sick and boring heterosexual life. Insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 28February 26, 2019 8:15 AM

Anne was great in this, and if you found her irritating, it's because you were supposed to. She nails the basic bitch snottiness that's needed to contrast the fabulous bitches in the industry.

by Anonymousreply 29February 26, 2019 8:23 AM

It’s a guilty pleasure to the point that I even read the terrible book it’s based on. The main character in the book is even more annoying and solipsistic, if you can believe it.

The weak link is Simon Baker. He just doesn’t fit in.

by Anonymousreply 30February 26, 2019 11:53 AM

Agreed, R21. Simon Baker brings nothing to the movie. I really hate that little hand twirl he does when he’s telling AndEE about Jaquelin Follet taking over.

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2019 12:16 PM

Meryl was great in it, and just as Pauline Kael said back in the 80s, Meryl is better in comedy than drama.

Emily Blunt came off like a Datalounge creation: witty, bitchy and elitist. Basically everything that many Dataloungers would like to be if they were a woman.

by Anonymousreply 32February 26, 2019 12:17 PM

I just love how OP just assumes that everyone has seen this movie, I haven't.

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2019 1:19 PM

It was fun the first time, but the second viewing revealed many reasons why I just despise most human beings.

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2019 1:29 PM

Streep should have won the Oscar that year over Helen Mirren for The Queen. Yes Mirren was great, but does anyone really remember or even talk about that movie or her performance anymore? But just like with this thread, people still talk about Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. She was really quite excellent in it.

by Anonymousreply 35February 26, 2019 1:50 PM

R32 She-Devil is my favorite Meryl

by Anonymousreply 36February 26, 2019 5:46 PM

R36 I love watching "She-Devil" and "Death Becomes Her" in a double bill. I almost wish Glenn had played the Goldie part.

by Anonymousreply 37February 26, 2019 6:24 PM

This movie improved so much compared to the book, the movie plot might be contrived and somewhat absurd but at least it offers a semblance of a dramatic arc whereas the book is just so meandering, It fleshes out the character of Miranda in such a way that you end up sympathizing with her which is just not true for the book.

by Anonymousreply 38February 27, 2019 4:51 AM

One of the rare movies I can watch over and over. Funny, sometimes witty, great clothes, cute Adrien Grenier, and an interesting character study in Amanda Priestly.

by Anonymousreply 39February 27, 2019 5:29 AM

This thread and DL in general are hardly indicative of "everyone."

by Anonymousreply 40February 27, 2019 5:52 AM

Some really great lines in the movie

by Anonymousreply 41February 27, 2019 7:23 AM

I love the stare that Meryl gives AnnE following this insult...it just hits the nail in the head!
