I'd say there are a few reasons men seemed more comfortable with being nude around other men then. 1)These are professional athletes, but really all men back then had grown up around same-sex nudity in gym class, swimming, etc... 2) Porn wasn't as available therefore they were not worried about the size of their penises. 3)Male nudity wasn't seen as sexual. 4) Homosexuals and Bisexuals were much less visible in society, so many men didn't even think that one could be around looking at them.

I do not think the change has a thing to do with better acceptance for homosexuality.
