Kaye Stevens

Were you a fan? She died in 2011.

If ever there was a call for the I don’t know her troll...

by Anonymousreply 1February 20, 2019 5:47 PM

Honestly, I have never heard her sing, but she was possibly the single most annoying panelist on Match Game.

Her mugging for the camera was bad enough, but she wouldn't shut up when the camera was off her.

by Anonymousreply 2February 20, 2019 5:49 PM

Love her hair.

by Anonymousreply 3February 20, 2019 6:20 PM

I hated her, she was after my husband.

by Anonymousreply 4February 20, 2019 6:21 PM

I didn't know who she was until I saw her on Match Game. I agree she was as annoying as hell on that show - not many and acting like she was on something - she probably got drunk in the green room. You could tell the rest of the panel hated her. Her theatrics on MG made me wonder how she ever became a "star."

I guess she was best known for her DOOL work?

She was equally obnoxious on TattleTales where she appeared with her "companion" Tom Lindstrom, a tall and very much younger man who seemed gay to me.

by Anonymousreply 5February 20, 2019 6:22 PM

R5

You're pretty spot on about her being on something.

IMDB states alcoholism damaged her career and she then became a born again Christian.

by Anonymousreply 6February 20, 2019 6:27 PM

We used to scissor at the Lezbo bar.

by Anonymousreply 7February 20, 2019 6:30 PM

I wonder why she was popular?

by Anonymousreply 8February 20, 2019 7:25 PM

I did love Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall on TattleTales.

by Anonymousreply 9February 20, 2019 7:46 PM

She was a loud-mouthed nightclub singer and comedienne who liked to tell naughty jokes on talk shows in the early 60s. She tried hard to be outrageous. She once told Johnny Carson that she was disappointed dating Joe Namath because he had a "quick release" as she mimed throwing a football. She got a good laugh with that.

She also scored with a comedy-relief role in the movie The Interns, a surprise hit about young doctors' love lives. She was also in the sequel. Then nothing. She was washed up by the time she appeared on Match Game. It must've been a mercy booking.

by Anonymousreply 10February 20, 2019 8:16 PM

Was she an alcoholic or druggie. Sometimes her demeanor was very strange on ‘The Match Game’

by Anonymousreply 11February 20, 2019 8:18 PM

{R11]

IMDB mentions her alcoholism wrecked her career and ended her marriage.

No drug addictions mentioned.

She traded her alcoholism for religion and started a ministry....

by Anonymousreply 12February 20, 2019 8:30 PM

She seemed to have the hots for Richard Dawson.

It didn't appear mutual. He usually kept his back to her on air.

by Anonymousreply 13February 20, 2019 8:31 PM

Clearly she was on ‘something’ during Match Game with her manic over reaching laugh. She was too much, just too much.

by Anonymousreply 14February 20, 2019 9:18 PM

I bet she was popular.

by Anonymousreply 15February 20, 2019 9:19 PM

She looks like an off-brand Lee Garlington

by Anonymousreply 16February 20, 2019 9:27 PM

Scissoring aint all it’s cracked up to be.

by Anonymousreply 17February 20, 2019 9:29 PM

I saw her in a stock production of MAME. She was terrific as Auntie Mame. She worked a lot and was everywhere in the 1960s, though she never became a huge star.

by Anonymousreply 18February 20, 2019 9:36 PM

Susan Hayes punched her in the face in the ladies' room at NBC Burbank.

Or so legend has it.

by Anonymousreply 19February 20, 2019 9:38 PM

She was no Jaye P. Morgan.

by Anonymousreply 20February 20, 2019 9:46 PM

Kaye

Jaye

by Anonymousreply 21February 20, 2019 9:48 PM

OP, you're funny. I'm home sick and was watching Match Game this morning and wondered who the hell she was.

by Anonymousreply 22February 21, 2019 1:55 AM

Here's Kaye!

Man, these people cannot sing. You add celebrity to their name and they think they can do anything. Uhm no, she is not a singer.

R26 No she can't.

She got fired from Days after taking a billboard sized ad that was lewd, in an effort to get an Emmy nom. Betty Corday came to hate her. She was an unabashed Ronald Reagan supporter when he was gov of CA. Nancy got a kick out of her after she blasted Jane Wyman, saying how crazy was Jane to let Ronnie go.

by Anonymousreply 34February 21, 2019 11:01 PM

As I watched Kaye as a teen, I just kept saying "lesbian...lesbian...lesbian..."

This thread inspired me to search for old episodes of the Match Game. I haven't watched it in years. Anyway, discovered there is a whole youtube channel dedicated to this fine show.

If Bret or Charles were not in a episode of Match Game it was nearly unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 39February 22, 2019 3:44 AM

R39 I thought the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 40February 22, 2019 3:54 AM

Well, give her this, girls: she DID come up with the absolute, hands-down, all-time GREATEST answer in Match Game history.

Rayburn: "Cleopatra lost her (blank) on the Nile."

Stevens: "Asp!"

by Anonymousreply 41February 22, 2019 4:27 AM

R41 truth, you are correct.

by Anonymousreply 42February 22, 2019 4:28 AM

The 70s were a bawdy time.

by Anonymousreply 43February 22, 2019 4:03 PM

Who was she and what was she famous for?

by Anonymousreply 44February 22, 2019 4:13 PM

R 44 Match Game ‘74

by Anonymousreply 45February 22, 2019 4:17 PM

I saw her on Match Game the other day and she came across as very slutty and forward with men. When she nonchalantly placed her hand on Richard Dawson's back, I wondered if she had ever tried to seduce a man that was turned off by her aggressiveness. I sure was, but I'm gay. Do straight men like aggressive women?

by Anonymousreply 46February 22, 2019 5:12 PM

Her Wikipedia page states that she was somewhat religious and did Christian focused work only in her later years. Oh oh

by Anonymousreply 47February 22, 2019 5:25 PM

r47 Maybe she was trying to repent for her slutty younger days? Vanity (Prince protege) was the same way. She became very religious and anti-drug in her older years.

by Anonymousreply 48February 22, 2019 5:33 PM

Didn't she do Molly Brown in summer stock? Seem to recall her doing "I Ain't Down Yet" on the Ed Sullivan show. She tried to style her red hair like Tammy Grimes did in that role. She was as "talented" as Shani Wallace who was always doing "As Long As He Needs Me" on variety shows in the 60s.

She was always 'on'. She showed up at one of those early soap fests in the mid 70's and was introduced as Kaye Stevens, the star of Days of our Lives. I think it was in Greensboro and Ruth Warrick was one of the other 'stars' there yet the host gushed over Kaye and asked her how it felt to go from starring in prime time and film to doing daytime and Kaye said the show needed her and she was being paid the highest salary of any woman in daytime. She was something else.

by Anonymousreply 51February 22, 2019 7:12 PM

She was pretty/ugly.

by Anonymousreply 52February 22, 2019 9:27 PM

[quote] She was as "talented" as Shani Wallace who was always doing "As Long As He Needs Me" on variety shows in the 60s.

Shani Wallis (not Wallace) starred (with Juliet Prowse) in the famed Long Beach production of DL's favorite musical, "Follies."

[quote]If Bret or Charles were not in a episode of Match Game it was nearly unwatchable.

It was pretty unwatchable even with them, especially camera hog Brett.

by Anonymousreply 54February 22, 2019 9:43 PM

It’s on GSN every day and has a devoted following in 2019.

by Anonymousreply 55February 22, 2019 9:49 PM

Well she was no Cat Stevens.

by Anonymousreply 56February 22, 2019 10:30 PM

And certainly no Inger Stevens.

by Anonymousreply 57February 22, 2019 10:39 PM

Not to mention Craig Stevens.

by Anonymousreply 58February 22, 2019 10:49 PM

R44, Kaye Stevens was a singer-comic, worked mostly in night clubs and TV. Goofy like Carol Burnett but not as good in comedy, a better vocalist. Match Game was a side job.

R46, you imbecile, that's the "I'm desperate" kind of comedy she did, Carol Burnett did it too - very dated and not that much funny then either.

I bet you enjoy shitting!

by Anonymousreply 60February 22, 2019 11:05 PM

Shani Wallis played Nancy, the female lead in the movie version of Oliver. She was appealing, but I puked when Oliver Reed beat her up and then she went out and sang "As Long as He Needs Me."

by Anonymousreply 61February 22, 2019 11:08 PM

As game show personalities went, she was no Shadoe Stevens.

by Anonymousreply 62February 22, 2019 11:39 PM

Did you eat my pussy yet?

by Anonymousreply 63February 23, 2019 12:27 AM

And don't even THINK about Justice John Paul Stevens!

by Anonymousreply 64February 23, 2019 12:51 AM

And then there's comedian Brody Stevens, who just committed suicide. (I saw it on another DL thread.)

by Anonymousreply 65February 23, 2019 12:54 AM

Closeted all her life and tried to pray away the gay near the end with all those christian freaks.

by Anonymousreply 66February 23, 2019 1:33 AM

^ that sounds right

by Anonymousreply 67February 23, 2019 2:18 AM

R61 that song is really another version of "My Man" isn't it? Odes to masochism.

by Anonymousreply 68February 23, 2019 3:38 AM

I liked her better when she was living.
