Is There a Correlation Between Deafness and Gayness?
I have been hounded with hearing problems all of my life...infections, periods of deafness, tinnitus for a few decades. On my father's side all these things are common. Yet, it is clear that gayness is on my mother's side. I have a maternal gay male cousin that has been profoundly deaf since 25 or 30.
When I go to events at the Gay Center in NYC, I see more deaf people in an evening then I will ever see in a year or two. I also think that gays might be more receptive to sound but I have no proof of this.

Left-handedness also seems more prevalent in gay people.

I have cookie-bite deafness and tinnitus.
It's horrible.

I think there has been a lot of speculation that homosexuality and deafness can correlate, but I've yet to hear anything that says gayness is genetically carried on one's maternal or paternal side. If so, I'd be really curious to read about that.

I've noticed this too. Autism also seems to be fairly prevalent among gays.

You're not the only one who has noticed this, OP.
Polyglots are more likely to be gay too!

The autism-spectrum claim is ridiculous.
I've met a lot of deaf or hearing-impaired gay men. Oddly, they have been more attractive than the average man!
The only downside to having sex with them (deaf-from-birth guys) is that hotel tricking is impossible because of the inadvertent vocalizing that accompanies their pleasure. No one needs contact from the front desk checking into claims of assault and fighting at such times.
But the best was a pair of deaf twins I met in high school attending school for the deaf events to mix the hearing and the deaf kids together. Their parents were deaf, too, which made the hooting and hollering in their room when we had sex feel like a weird freedom.

R3, I should have said that my reference to gayness along maternal line is completely anecdotal, but has been proven true many times.

OP, I've noticed this correlation, too, and was always curious about it.
In college, I took an audiology class. One day, we had a guest speaker come to talk about capital-D Deaf culture (which, as I learned, is different from lowercase-d deaf). This guy was flaming gay. I loved his lecture, and went up to him after class to ask, through an interpreter, the same question you've posed here: "Why does gayness seem to be so common in Deaf communities?"
He responded that, in his opinion, people who have had the experience of being different in one way (Deaf) are more open to other kinds of difference (gayness). In other words, gay Deaf people are more likely to accept themselves than gay hearing people, and straight Deaf people are more open-minded than straight hearing people.
After that conversation, I did some poking around in the literature on Deafness, and found that homosexuality does, indeed, appear to be more prevalent in Deaf populations.

Too much loud music (bars, clubs) causes hearing loss.

[quote]The autism-spectrum claim is ridiculous.
Research suggests that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) report increased homosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality, but decreased heterosexuality. It is important to increase awareness about increased non-heterosexuality in ASD among autistic populations, medical professionals and care-takers, so as to provide specialized care, if needed and increase support and inclusion for non-heterosexual autistic individuals.

R9, I'm baffled as to why you would FF my post. I think you may have misunderstood me. To be clear, I'm gay, and outed myself to the lecturer before asking my question in order to give it some context.
R13, it made sense to me, too! I know others on this thread are talking about a possible genetic connection, but I thought the cultural angle was worth bringing up, as well.

R8, even a small experience of deafness and you will realize the immense capability of human cruelty. Deafness opens one up to nothing except that cruelty.

That is sad. I wish I know this about Birdman before I die to save him, because I think wrong that he is man happy with wife.
Now I am find he cannot use ears without battery and also he will fuck me with pleasure if I ask? Well, it is too late now.
Birdman is not handsome and not clever and everyone forgets he is in room, and he is useless with his deaf ears - but, when I lived, I enjoyed to look at him.

Accepted, R17. Incidentally, I'm near Gallaudet University, which is very gay-friendly these days. If we have any DLers there, hopefully they'll weigh in!

I had an internal growth in one ear and had to have surgery twice as a child to remove it. Basically deaf in that ear now and should wear a hearing aid, but don't.
