Stepmom (1998) - Did you like it?
I haven’t watched this movie in years but do want to sit down and watch it. It came out when I was 12 years old. I used to love this movie so much cause I loved Julia Roberts and the movie as a whole.
Also had a crush on Ed Harris lmaooo.
It gave us Jena Malone, who I hated until I saw in The Hunger Games sequels. I thought she was the best part of those films, even with a small role in both Mockingjay movies.

I liked Julia Roberts' hair in this more than any of her other movies. Other than that, not so much.

I think this may be the last film where Ed Harris was still hot. He lost all that weight for The Hours and never recovered his looks after that.

It’s a classic example of it being hard to care to the characters because they are so well off. It’s like, oh poor you in your fabulous house in idyllic suburb where you want for nothing.

The MAD TV sequel was pretty entertaining.

Really maudlin and simplistic - has a very TV movie feel to it. That said, it's pretty watchable pablum. And it was filmed where I grew up so that was fun.

I remember in the trailer a clip from a scene where the little girl (Jena Malone) is making a getaway up the stairs to avoid a fight with her mom (Susan Sarandon). The father (Ed Harris) says, "Don't run out on your mother!" and the kid says, "No, dad...that's YOUR job!" And I thought it was sooooooooo cheesed!
You could practically see the writer carefully phrasing Ed Harris's line that way JUST so the daughter could deliver that tearful little zinger. (IRL, he would've said something like, "Don't walk away when your mother is talking to you" not "don't run out on your mother")

That line was so popular when the trailer debuted lmao

I saw this in theaters with my mom. I was 9 at the time. I remember coming home, hopping on a message board, and calling someone, "Frosty the snow bitch."
Here's Liam now:

‘One True Thing’ with Renee and M came out the same year and was a much better movie.

Susan Sarandon was great in the movie.

It’s a weird movie that I kind of like and kind of find ridiculous. The son was annoying as fuck. Jena Malone was great but the staircase scene was silly. My dad would have charged up the stairs after me and cracked me for mouthing off like that. Maybe that’s just my family? There was a lot of good acting but I found the constant depiction of wealth distracting. Like, I’d feel really bad for Susan Sarandon and the kids but then be like, “Omg-they each have their own horse?”

That nasty ass little kid read for the role of Cole Sear in Sixth Sense. Movie would have sucked donkey balls if he'd been in it.

R8 that's pretty funny. It's unfashionable to admit it, but I have always laughed harder at mad TV than snl. Speaking of mad tv movie parodies "Nice White Lady " is a really funny parody of the heroic white teacher genre. It should still be on YouTube.

I watched this last night. Such shlock. Susan Sarandon embodies the frau that is hated on DL. She was cold and calculating. I was hoping she wouldn't make it to the end of the movie.

Saggy Susan thought she was going to get another Oscar for this. She was knocked out by the great M as another suburban mom dying from cancer in the much less sentimental "One True Thing".

NO. Roberts is a shit actress who performs with her teeth and hair, and isn't remotely able to convincingly portray anything resembling a human being.

Jena Malone is fantastic in "Saved!" and also in the love it or hate it "Neon Demon". I've seen "Stepmom" but have no recollection of it. There's my review.

Hated baby dyke Malone as a child but I liked her in the Hunger Games series.
HATED the boy. Fucking HATED him.

My god, I've not thought of Neon Demon for years. Thankfully. A film as awful as Sarandon's politics.
Saved is amazing though, despite the presence of the Sarandon child.

The kid who played the son was originally cast as Harry Potter. He got canned after JK Rowling demanded a Brit play Harry Potter.

I had the biggest age-appropriate crush (same age) on Liam Aiken in that Series of Unfortunate Events movie. He turned out very well— hot man now.
Jenna Malone has had a very interesting film career. I like the diverse bit and supporting roles she has taken. She even plays a hillbilly in Cold Mountain for a minute until she gets shot!

Susan Sarandon only had a few months left to live.
Julia Roberts only had a few years before Ed Harris would start to resemble a wrinkled scrotum.
Too depressing a movie for me.

I'm not going to lie, I liked Stepmom even though it's probably a horrible movie. I was in high school and I feel like it was always one of those movies that was always on rotation on cable. I like Jenna Malone in general. This was one of Julia Roberts less annoying roles.

I'm sure there was a Jackie Onassis reference in the storyline. SS's character was a woman called Jackie who worked as an editor at Doubleday and was dying of Hodgkin's Lymphoma

My mom rented this when I was a kid and I remember watching it with her. I haven't seen it in years. I've followed Jena Malone's career and really like her. I think she's legitimately talented.
