It was so chic and exotic in the 60s-70s, but no one talks about it anymore. Why not?
Is Acapulco Still a Vacation Destination?

It was in The Flintstones with John Goodman in 1994. But that’s the last time I ever heard anyone mention it in an exotic way.

It’s now known as one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Drug crime.
Sad.

After the Love Boat went off the air, it stopped being the "cool" destination. Also, drug war violence is really bad there. But mainly it's the loss of glamour-by-association with the Love Boat.

Does the Pacific Princess stop there?

Acapulco is in the news as an exceptionally violent destination
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 14, 2019 1:24 AM |
No cruise lines go there anymore. The entire tourist industry collapsed. The famous cliff divers can't even make tips, so they're gone.

Narcos: Mexico dealt with the growth of drug violence in Acapulco.

What a shame. In the 70s and 80s you could go to La Condesa Beach and swim out to the rock island (10 minute swim) and find the local Mexican boys hanging out away from prying eyes. They often would take off their bathing suits and jack off or suck one another, often inviting you to join in. It was a very surreal place to cruise. Had some great Mexican pinga there.

So are all those high rise hotels vacant now?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 14, 2019 1:31 AM |
After Liz died, the place went to shit.

The rise in popularity of Cancun and the Riviera Maya has added to Aca’s demise. Cancun didn’t even exist until the early 70s, it was created and masterplanned by the Mexican government specifically as a tourist destination.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 14, 2019 1:35 AM |
Aca? Seriously?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 14, 2019 1:39 AM |
Hotels.com has several hundred listings there, so someone is still going.

Back in the '80s our cruise ship had Acapulco on its ports-of-call itinerary. Upon arriving in Acapulco, we'd hired a 'Limo' to take us to the "Mirador" to watch the fine cliff divers in all their glory. The next day we jumped into a taxi to visit the downtown area immediately adjacent to the beach.
The taxi drivers regarded the traffic lights as decorative ornaments -
(Though the '50s/'60s architecture of the waterfront grand hotels/casinos was spectacular.)

Acapulco? A vacation destination in 2019?
Ahah ahaha, oh my sides!

R14 clearly you don’t remember the clothing brand ACA JOE

I miss Aca 😭 ❤️

Mexico in general is a very dangerous country, if you value you life, you don't step foot in Mexico.

[quote] Had some great Mexican pinga there.
Mexicans say "verga," not pinga.

Because of what happened in Acapulco, the government has tried very hard to protect its other Pacific coast resort cities to avoid a repeat. So while places like Mazatlan have had problems, it's mostly OK now. And places like Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas were always mostly safe. And they're really trying to keep Huatulco (in the state of Oaxaca) "clean." Many Canadians go there, and it's a stop on cruise itineraries that go through the Panama Canal.
That said, I think that a lot of Mexicans (and perhaps visitors from other Latin American countries) still go to Acapulco.

I do love Cozumel. Been years since I've been there though.

Acapulco has gotten cheaper and is now primarily a national destination. It's only about 5 hours from Mexico City by car, so it's a quick weekend trip.
Cancun has far surpassed it for international visitors. Acapulco is also extraordinarily violent.

I love the beaches of La Paz in Baja. Less touristy than Cabo.
Playa Zipolite in Oaxaca has a fine nude beach with a gay section.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 14, 2019 6:34 AM |
Even Cabo is getting dangerous. PV is as safe as Disneyland. I don't know how they do it, but whatever it is, I'm so happy. I have loved that place for 30 years and it keeps getting better while keeping its identity as much as possible. Tulum is gorgeous but it has increasing crime issues.

Las Brisas, the pink hotel from the 50s and 60s. I'd like to go there.

Also Cancun/Cozumel/R. Maya area is much closer to the East Coast than Acapulco

The water in Cancun is the most brilliant shade of turquoise I've ever seen, it almost didn't look real.

Like everywhere else in the Carribbean, R35.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 14, 2019 7:56 PM |
R36 wrong. It's the white sand that amplifies it. I've been all over the Caribbean, the only place that even came close was Grand Cayman.
