Tasteful Friends: Inside Maggie Gyllenhaal & Peter Sarsgaard’s Brooklyn Home

I like it, very comfortable and relatable but a little too dark.

My friend lives in the building next door. Says they’re friendly and low key. I saw her on the 2 train a couple weeks ago, I don’t think anyone recognized her except me.

He sounds so gay!!!

Oh it’s a nice place for sure

by Anonymousreply 1February 12, 2019 7:28 PM

I loved the metal bars outside the windows

by Anonymousreply 2February 12, 2019 7:32 PM

Maggie has my deepest sympathies

It is really nice, not overdone, sane. I wouldn't change much except for the colors. I would use slightly different colors for the walls. I like the bed couches and the fireplaces.

by Anonymousreply 4February 12, 2019 7:36 PM

Unpretentious and homey. 👍🏻

by Anonymousreply 5February 12, 2019 7:38 PM

[quote]I don’t think anyone recognized her except me.

Did you say "Hello, beautiful"?

by Anonymousreply 6February 12, 2019 7:38 PM

I love it, warm..personal...unpretentious.

by Anonymousreply 7February 12, 2019 7:45 PM

Yeah, I know where they live, too. The thing with a lot of these Brooklyn brownstones (and I grew up in one before my parents moved to another part of Brooklyn) is that the outside is very modest and then you go into one and taken back to the late 19th/early 20th C. if you're lucky. Clearly they had to gut most of it but you're lucky if you get a home with the historic craftsmanship with attention to detail. I miss it.

by Anonymousreply 8February 12, 2019 7:45 PM

Yes.. I love the brown stone, and all the elements of it... the fireplaces, the brick, wood floor, the iron gates on the first floor windows. It looks comfortable. The bathroom with the copper tub is great, too.

by Anonymousreply 9February 12, 2019 7:46 PM

Teak tub

by Anonymousreply 10February 12, 2019 7:47 PM

Peter does seem gay. More so when he's handling the cat. :)

I love their house. Much more than Julianne Moore's brownstone in W. Village. Which is also short on natural light and looks "design-y".

by Anonymousreply 13February 12, 2019 7:57 PM

It's nice. They seem like a pretty likeable couple. The cat is HUGE!

by Anonymousreply 14February 12, 2019 8:03 PM

Peter is over compensating with his cat

by Anonymousreply 15February 12, 2019 8:04 PM

It's a beautiful cat and it's nice that it's a rescue.

by Anonymousreply 16February 12, 2019 8:06 PM

Ew fuck Peter for dropping that cat. arrogant piece of shit

by Anonymousreply 17February 12, 2019 8:18 PM

Hand on his hip, limp wrist, lisp... Rescue cat... “Warm chestnut” floors...

by Anonymousreply 18February 12, 2019 8:20 PM

He seems to have a nice bubble butt - or is that his wallet?

by Anonymousreply 19February 12, 2019 8:21 PM

What do you think their combined net worth is?

by Anonymousreply 20February 12, 2019 8:21 PM

Looks like they don't have a lot of money. Is that why they live in NY?

by Anonymousreply 21February 12, 2019 8:24 PM

Yes, only poor people live in Park Slope, Brooklyn

by Anonymousreply 22February 12, 2019 8:28 PM

Is R21 being sarcastic?

by Anonymousreply 23February 12, 2019 8:32 PM

I think they do very nicely. That brownstone's worth millions. Probably they enjoy living in NY because they both like to do theater.

by Anonymousreply 24February 12, 2019 8:33 PM

I hope so..

by Anonymousreply 25February 12, 2019 8:34 PM

His big butt makes up for her flat one.

by Anonymousreply 29February 12, 2019 8:44 PM

She does have a unique look.. back on topic, to live in a brownstone in NYC, you need the big bucks.

by Anonymousreply 30February 12, 2019 8:45 PM

Gentrifying celebrity yuppies showing off their property and lifestyle. Just shut up act, which they both can do pretty well.

by Anonymousreply 31February 12, 2019 8:50 PM

I can listen to him speak all day.

by Anonymousreply 32February 12, 2019 8:51 PM

[quote]to live in a brownstone in NYC, you need the big bucks.

They must have spent everything on the house then, since there was obviously nothing left for the interior. The house isn't that big either.

by Anonymousreply 33February 12, 2019 8:53 PM

That's a big house by Bklyn standards, and the renovations look to be first class. If you don't like their style, that's a different matter.

r31, don't be such a baby.

by Anonymousreply 34February 12, 2019 8:56 PM

I would not want to live in Brooklyn, though.

I winder if they can't afford it anymore... how do they have so much money? they only do Indies

by Anonymousreply 36February 12, 2019 8:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 43February 12, 2019 9:20 PM

They moved from the West Village to Park Slope. Where is their next move?

by Anonymousreply 44February 12, 2019 9:27 PM

The article said they moved there so the kids could walk to school and now the kids are grown, but I think they're barely middle school age. Maybe they're in boarding school now so the parents can live where they please, or they're old enough to take the subway to school.

by Anonymousreply 45February 12, 2019 9:30 PM

Coney Island?

by Anonymousreply 46February 12, 2019 9:31 PM

The article says they’re moving to be walking distance from their kids’ school.

by Anonymousreply 47February 12, 2019 9:32 PM

“The reason they’re ditching the neighborhood, according to Gyllenhaal, is—unsurprisingly for a Park Slope family—spurred by their kids. The couple moved to the area before their first daughter was born in 2006, but now the kids are grown. “The motivation for moving was to be able to walk [the children] to school,” the Deuce actor told the WSJ.“

by Anonymousreply 48February 12, 2019 9:33 PM

i know i sound crazy but while the actual house is great, it looks quite... poor. I have an IKEA vibe form the decor.

by Anonymousreply 49February 12, 2019 9:35 PM

When I saw her on the train she got on at Grand Army Plaza with two girls.

Berkeley Caroll School is near there, maybe that’s where they’re moving to.

by Anonymousreply 50February 12, 2019 9:36 PM

I think it's all the teak and tile.

by Anonymousreply 51February 12, 2019 9:36 PM

Do they show the bathroom? That's where Brother Jake takes his dumps

by Anonymousreply 52February 12, 2019 9:37 PM

r50, they don't appear to be moving to be near anyone's school. That was their motivation for moving to this current house.

I'm guessing the girls are at St. Ann's.

by Anonymousreply 53February 12, 2019 9:38 PM

Poor Dinah. He drops her on the hardwood floor from the distance of his chest, like she’s a bag of potatoes, as he claims that so many pets need to be adopted via rescue.

WTF is wrong with him?

I don’t dislike the space, but I don’t love it, either. It needs more color.

by Anonymousreply 54February 12, 2019 9:39 PM

I'm guessing Peter is the one who named the cat.

by Anonymousreply 55February 12, 2019 9:40 PM

The animal rescue may be calling him soon. They are very particular about their animal adoptions..

by Anonymousreply 56February 12, 2019 9:44 PM

R49, agreed. The tiles are cheap, and the wrought iron looks like something out of an apartment in Van Nuys.

Other than a few art pieces, there aren’t any stand out pieces, no classics. There’s way too much stuff in there, and the fireplaces look cheap for a classic brownstone.

by Anonymousreply 57February 12, 2019 9:45 PM

R53 has a good guess!

“Nearly thirteen years ago, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard spent $1.91 million on a Park Slope townhouse at 36 Sterling Place. Though their two daughters grew up and went to the exclusive St. Ann’s school in the friendly neighborhood, they now attend school elsewhere, so the couple has decided to list the brownstone in favor of being “able to walk [the children] to school,” Gyllenhaal told the Wall Street Journal. In addition to convenience, however, they’ll also be looking at a nice profit, considering the home has hit the market for $4,599,000.“

by Anonymousreply 58February 12, 2019 9:45 PM

I hated the way he dropped the cat too, tbh. That was a a long drop and that cat is not light.

by Anonymousreply 59February 12, 2019 9:46 PM

I have two cats, he did nothing wrong but I knew DL would get fixated on that as soon as I saw the video.

by Anonymousreply 60February 12, 2019 9:47 PM

And his dick is a normal flaccid dick. Must be some really insecure average guys here. Boys with big dicks don't point and ridicule.

by Anonymousreply 61February 12, 2019 9:58 PM

I'm surprised they're not asking more. I would have thought at least $6-7 million. I doubt they're leaving the a rea. I would bet they'll send the kids to school at some Jewish school in the neighborhood. Unless they move to the UES. or the UWS. I've seen pictures of the family walking to synagogue for holidays. I've also see MAggie walking Ramona to school. I've rarely ever seen photos of their other kid.

by Anonymousreply 62February 12, 2019 9:59 PM

So does Peter fuck Jake Or does Jake fuck Peter?

by Anonymousreply 63February 12, 2019 10:01 PM

Now, why would you suppose they're sending the kids to "some Jewish school"? It does seem odd that they'd leave St. Ann's, though, unless it's not compatible with the kids' learning styles. There's a very good Friends' school in Bklyn.

by Anonymousreply 64February 12, 2019 10:02 PM

R63 double ended dildo is my guess. Both piggy bottoms

by Anonymousreply 65February 12, 2019 10:02 PM

[quote]“Nearly thirteen years ago, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard spent $1.91 million on a Park Slope townhouse at 36 Sterling Place. This info seems off. Contrary to what the article says, St. Ann's is not in Park Slope, so MG and PS wouldn't have been able to walk their kids to school during the years they were enrolled there. And at this point, I would think the kids are old enough that walking them to school is less rather than more of an issue. I also find it odd that they took the kids out of St. Ann's, but who knows what that is about.

by Anonymousreply 66February 12, 2019 10:16 PM

A Jewish school is likely because Maggie is Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 67February 12, 2019 10:17 PM

They’re probably divorcing, which is why all the excuses about walking the kids to school don’t make sense.

by Anonymousreply 68February 12, 2019 10:20 PM

Same here, R60. It's the same idiots who think a video with some frau going "boo!" to her baby as a joke is tantamount to raping the baby and react in that way.

by Anonymousreply 69February 12, 2019 10:24 PM

i think they are divorcing too. They look and sound like two friends who don't see each other very often and are ok with it

by Anonymousreply 70February 12, 2019 10:25 PM

R68, interesting. I got that vibe as well.

She seems exhausted by him, and seems to tolerate him, while he seems to be trying to engage with her in all the ways their marital therapist suggested, until he passive-aggressively drops HER cat to the floor, due to his not so covert resentment.

by Anonymousreply 71February 12, 2019 10:30 PM

Oh for fuck sake, it's not like he boiled the cat.

by Anonymousreply 72February 12, 2019 10:35 PM

The Jewish school suggestion is nonsense. Nearly all the top tier private schools in Bklyn and Manhattan are Jewish enough, and I'm sure they're not sending their daughters to a Yeshiva.

People take their kids out of St Ann's if its teaching style isn't right for their child. This happens in the best schools. Many kids thrive at St Ann's; some kids are more comfortable elsewhere.

The divorce theory is the most plausible. Did they ever actually get married?

by Anonymousreply 73February 12, 2019 10:36 PM

how fug like her snag a kool guy like him????

by Anonymousreply 74February 12, 2019 10:37 PM

^Sometimes I wish an aptitude test were required to post here.

by Anonymousreply 75February 12, 2019 10:40 PM

Preach it, R75.

Is the kitchen on the garden level?

by Anonymousreply 76February 12, 2019 10:41 PM

Indeed, r75.

Yes, r76, kitchen's on garden level, which isn't the basement. It's functionally the first floor, but it's at ground level, and the basement's below ground. Most row houses/brownstones are configured this way.

by Anonymousreply 77February 12, 2019 10:44 PM

[quote] Did they ever actually get married?

They got married back in 2009.

[quote]And his dick is a normal flaccid dick. Must be some really insecure average guys here. Boys with big dicks don't point and ridicule.

Unfortunately this isn't a Datalounge problem, this is an internet problem. People with normal dicks or people who are showers get called out. Then people wonder why more men won't do on screen nudity.

[quote]Peter does seem gay. More so when he's handling the cat. :)

He has admitted in print that he's not entirely straight before.

by Anonymousreply 78February 12, 2019 10:47 PM

Where’s the secret Brokeback Room?

by Anonymousreply 79February 12, 2019 10:49 PM

[quote]Most row houses/brownstones are configured this way.

Thanks, R77; I guess I didn't reckon with the fact that the steps from the street to the parlour level/main entry must ascend a full storey?

by Anonymousreply 80February 12, 2019 10:58 PM

Why does he hate the cat?

by Anonymousreply 81February 12, 2019 11:03 PM

I have cats in my neighborhood that jump from roof tops, give it a rest.

by Anonymousreply 82February 12, 2019 11:05 PM

Yes, r80, or at least most of a full storey. It's possible for the garden level to be down a couple of shallow steps from the garden entry (most likely at the back of the house, opening onto the terrace and garden) so that the front steps to the parlor level don't seem so steep.

by Anonymousreply 83February 12, 2019 11:06 PM

R80 a lot of these brownstones are set up as the first floor being the kitchen/living/dining rooms, second floor the bedrooms and then third (and fourth if there is one) separate apartments. But it looks like they were using all four floors. Lots of climbing to get to your bedroom

by Anonymousreply 84February 12, 2019 11:06 PM

They're getting older, it's much easier for old people to live on one level.

by Anonymousreply 85February 12, 2019 11:11 PM

Have you ever seen those poor cats that they have to fit with wheels?

by Anonymousreply 86February 12, 2019 11:12 PM

Is it because of him, R86?

by Anonymousreply 87February 12, 2019 11:13 PM

I bet the cat has heard all sorts of “goings on” from the overnight guest room.

by Anonymousreply 88February 12, 2019 11:18 PM

It does seem like their house has a lot of climbing, but also a number of living/library/sitting spaces.

I've seen renovations in brownstones where kitchen has been moved up to the main level (or higher) from what I would presume would be its original place on the garden level. (Or did the servants have cook in & schlep up from the basement?)

by Anonymousreply 89February 12, 2019 11:20 PM

I love it. They kept most of the interior architecture intact, unlike that ruined apartment on the UES we looked at yesterday.

by Anonymousreply 90February 12, 2019 11:20 PM

Maybe they’re divorcing because he had an affair with her brother

by Anonymousreply 91February 12, 2019 11:21 PM

Now, they're not getting divorced except in some of your minds, correct?

by Anonymousreply 92February 12, 2019 11:22 PM

The cat knows all of Peter’s “safe words”

by Anonymousreply 93February 12, 2019 11:23 PM

Well, maybe she's tired of watching him abuse the cat????

by Anonymousreply 94February 12, 2019 11:23 PM

The cat CLEARLY wanted to jump. I don't think he liked the camera guy.

by Anonymousreply 95February 12, 2019 11:24 PM

[quote] Now, they're not getting divorced except in some of your minds, correct?

Someone speculated it's the real reason they're selling the brownstone. It does make more sense than the rather convoluted explanation about walking kids to school, but only time will tell if it's correct.

by Anonymousreply 96February 12, 2019 11:25 PM

The cook or waitstaff didn't need to schlepp food up a flight of stairs, r80. Most of these large vertical houses had a dumbwaiter. The house I grew up in had one that traveled by a pulley from a cupboard on the garden level to one on the parlor level. It also had a laundry chute with a trap door in linen closets on each of the two upper floors straight down to the cellar (or maybe it was the kitchen, but I think the cellar). You just dropped your dirty clothes into the trap door and it landed in a basket a couple of floors down.

by Anonymousreply 97February 12, 2019 11:26 PM

^Like the poor cat???

by Anonymousreply 98February 12, 2019 11:27 PM

Who gets the cat in the divorce?

by Anonymousreply 99February 12, 2019 11:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 100February 12, 2019 11:31 PM

Maggie... the cat likes her best..

by Anonymousreply 101February 12, 2019 11:31 PM

I can't swear our family cat didn't get sent downstairs in the dumbwaiter (although I'm positive none of us would have sent him down the laundry chute).

by Anonymousreply 102February 12, 2019 11:31 PM

well done, r101

by Anonymousreply 103February 12, 2019 11:32 PM

Did you see the cat crouching down? He's used to hiding from them and Jake. They have to move because the neighbors know what he does to the cat.

by Anonymousreply 104February 12, 2019 11:34 PM

I like them both. I like the house. They're clearly very comfortable and affectionate with each other. If he were gay, he's smart enough and liberal enough to come out and say it.

by Anonymousreply 105February 12, 2019 11:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 106February 12, 2019 11:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 107February 12, 2019 11:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 108February 12, 2019 11:45 PM

omg when did she marry tom arnold???

by Anonymousreply 110February 12, 2019 11:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 131February 13, 2019 12:44 AM

I saw it. He's good, as usual, but the movie didn't have much staying power for me: watchable, but forgettable too. Too be honest, I forget the ending.

by Anonymousreply 132February 13, 2019 12:48 AM

I watched it and forgot about what it was about too. Campbell Scott was in it.

by Anonymousreply 133February 13, 2019 12:53 AM

Oh my god. They are likable, humble, and nice!!! I thought I would despise them.

And the house? Refreshingly simple with nice touches.

by Anonymousreply 134February 13, 2019 12:55 AM

I also saw that movie and can barely remember a thing about it now.

by Anonymousreply 135February 13, 2019 12:55 AM

R49 I completely agree. The house has a cheap, dirty-ish vibe about it, as if they often forget to change their sheets for much of the time. I find it a little depressing in the way that tired beige homes often can make us feel, and the tile over the fireplace is wretched...that's bathroom tile!

by Anonymousreply 136February 13, 2019 12:59 AM

Peter has said that he prefers not to be a leading man; that he prefers character/supporting work.

Incredibly dreary and depressing. That rocking chair and the "full size bed" sectional are so sad. The shelving looks cheap. They don't own 1 nice piece of furniture. OP described it as "comfy and relatable." Who picks up Architectural Digest to see "comfy and relatable", much less sad and depressing. Did they spend all of their money on the teak tub?

Peter seems to constantly talk over Maggie.

Dropping a cat without regard really turns me off on Peter Sarsgaard. I didn't get any gay vibes off the old boy. I like the house and would like it more if were mine. I hope the chatter about these people divorcing is baloney, they seem quite normal.

by Anonymousreply 141February 13, 2019 3:03 AM

Peter is hot, always found him attractive. He should be with Jake instead. What’s up with dropping the cat?

by Anonymousreply 142February 13, 2019 6:39 AM

He doesn't know how to properly hold the cat! How hard can it be not to make it uncomfortable?

by Anonymousreply 143February 13, 2019 9:50 AM

Its a bloody cat, Crikey! Ive seen fatter cats survive a bigger drop than this

by Anonymousreply 144February 13, 2019 10:37 AM

When I was five, I dropped a cat over a bannister. It fell a full flight of stairs. I wanted to see if it landed on its feet. It did. Then it ran away and hated me for the rest of its life. I felt sad, but it could not be undone.

by Anonymousreply 145February 13, 2019 1:24 PM

Someone help me!!! Call the ASPCA! Call PETA Please!!!

by Anonymousreply 146February 13, 2019 1:29 PM

Fun fact: one of the executive producers of THE DYING GAUL was Paul Manafort. Probably laundering money from the Ukraine or Rusher.

It's a movie about catfishing, typing, and action where the man goes up into the man.

by Anonymousreply 147February 13, 2019 3:05 PM

^ So, the man is with a man as he would be with a woman?

by Anonymousreply 148February 13, 2019 4:42 PM

I need to get a copy of this film.

by Anonymousreply 149February 13, 2019 4:50 PM

I liked the house, loved the wide couches/sofas. Maggie Gyllenhaal looks good, I like her hair a lot. Peter Sarsgaard was giving off pajama vibes. He should have worn darker colors. I'm guessing the cat is not really that domesticated. The mistake Peter Sarsgaard made was in how he kept his grip on the cat when the cat obviously didn't want to be held. Yes, Peter could have and should have at least crouched down before releasing the cat.

by Anonymousreply 150February 13, 2019 4:58 PM

One of his twitter fans should post a link to this thread there.

by Anonymousreply 151February 13, 2019 5:02 PM

WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CAT

by Anonymousreply 152February 13, 2019 5:05 PM

Some things struck me:

They have books crammed in just about every nook and cranny so probably not jumping on the trendy KonMari bandwagon anytime soon? Tells me although they are celebrities they are independent free spirits who eschew the latest passing fancies, which I admire.

They still have their landline hooked up in their bedroom, and the telephone set isn't even a fucking cordless.

This is the third wood bathtub I have seen someone owning, and now I want to bathe in a wood bathtub to find out the appeal for myself. (Been curious for awhile now about a Japanese Hinoki deep soaking tub...)

by Anonymousreply 153February 13, 2019 5:14 PM

Peter has a nice big butt.

by Anonymousreply 154February 13, 2019 5:28 PM

Good lord, can everyone quit harping on the cat thing?

by Anonymousreply 161February 13, 2019 6:16 PM

Will Peter ever find a residential tub that can accommodate his phat azz, if he has to leave that dream Brownstone?

How much were they acting because they seemed down to earth and wonderful in the clip. It’s a nice unpretentious home but not quite AD material. I want to see a Basquiat over the mantel in AD.

Meanwhile, people on the other side of the pond only volunteer that they live in a "mid-sized European country". And someone on another thread lives in "an affluent suburb in the Northeast". LOL

The house looks lived in. It's tastefully decorated, and has some nice touches but it doesn't look like a museum or the results of an interior designer. It looks very personal. I'd give it a B+. I have to say I do think both Maggie & Peter are very talented actors, and Peter is particularly interesting to watch as a character actor, but I hate their taste in clothes. Neither of them knows a damned thing about fashion and I find Maggie very pretentious in that regard. She truly thinks she is the shit.

Craft paper on the walls, an unfinished fire place and a full size bed sized couch = “tastefully decorated”?

The majority the population’s homes looked “lived in” and most people don’t hire interior designers. Most people’s homes aren’t worthy of being photographed for a magazine and neither was this one.

I lived on that street back in the late 80s. Got mugged twice, once in broad daylight going to work one morning. As far as streets in Park Slope go, it is nothing special, far from the Prospect Park and the Botanic Garden but walking distance from the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It's safe to walk there now.

Their brownstone has a lot of interior space and a decent size yard. A friend lived a few doors from where they are, identical layout, two sub-basements under the garden floor, IIRC. In the video they seem genuine and kind.

I mentioned this on The DL once. One Christmas Eve afternoon, I was shopping in a now defunct artsy tchothke store on 5th Avenue a few blocks from where they live. I was looking at something and a couple stood next to me discussing something on the shelf. It was her and Jake. He is handsome and tall, both seemed to have zero attitude.

by Anonymousreply 230February 21, 2019 5:19 PM

They're getting a divorce because the cat doesn't like him. The claim that they share one desk is proof positive they are never in the house at the same time.I don't think anyone is actually currently living in the house despite the method acting decor. It looks empty, vaguely depressing and sort of smelly. Not cat litter smelly. It is possible the cat was just passing through and doesn't know any of these people. The cat's true humans would only have portraits of the cat in her real home as nature intended.

Maggie was on Kelly & Ryan this morning. They are still together and they have moved out of the townhouse. She didn't say where they went bu their oldest daughter understands why they moved but the younger kid was upset about moving. She said he husband tricked her into mowing the lawn in a bikini and he snapped a picture and she wasn't pleased so if they have a lawn to mow, maybe they went to the suburbs.
