Yeah, I know where they live, too. The thing with a lot of these Brooklyn brownstones (and I grew up in one before my parents moved to another part of Brooklyn) is that the outside is very modest and then you go into one and taken back to the late 19th/early 20th C. if you're lucky. Clearly they had to gut most of it but you're lucky if you get a home with the historic craftsmanship with attention to detail. I miss it.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 12, 2019 7:45 PM |
Yes.. I love the brown stone, and all the elements of it... the fireplaces, the brick, wood floor, the iron gates on the first floor windows. It looks comfortable. The bathroom with the copper tub is great, too.

They moved from the West Village to Park Slope. Where is their next move?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 12, 2019 9:27 PM |
The article said they moved there so the kids could walk to school and now the kids are grown, but I think they're barely middle school age. Maybe they're in boarding school now so the parents can live where they please, or they're old enough to take the subway to school.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 12, 2019 9:30 PM |
Coney Island?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 12, 2019 9:31 PM |
The article says they’re moving to be walking distance from their kids’ school.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 12, 2019 9:32 PM |
“The reason they’re ditching the neighborhood, according to Gyllenhaal, is—unsurprisingly for a Park Slope family—spurred by their kids. The couple moved to the area before their first daughter was born in 2006, but now the kids are grown. “The motivation for moving was to be able to walk [the children] to school,” the Deuce actor told the WSJ.“

by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 12, 2019 9:37 PM |
r50, they don't appear to be moving to be near anyone's school. That was their motivation for moving to this current house.
I'm guessing the girls are at St. Ann's.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 12, 2019 9:38 PM |
Poor Dinah. He drops her on the hardwood floor from the distance of his chest, like she’s a bag of potatoes, as he claims that so many pets need to be adopted via rescue.
WTF is wrong with him?
I don’t dislike the space, but I don’t love it, either. It needs more color.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 12, 2019 9:44 PM |
R49, agreed. The tiles are cheap, and the wrought iron looks like something out of an apartment in Van Nuys.
Other than a few art pieces, there aren’t any stand out pieces, no classics. There’s way too much stuff in there, and the fireplaces look cheap for a classic brownstone.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 12, 2019 9:45 PM |
R53 has a good guess!
“Nearly thirteen years ago, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard spent $1.91 million on a Park Slope townhouse at 36 Sterling Place. Though their two daughters grew up and went to the exclusive St. Ann’s school in the friendly neighborhood, they now attend school elsewhere, so the couple has decided to list the brownstone in favor of being “able to walk [the children] to school,” Gyllenhaal told the Wall Street Journal. In addition to convenience, however, they’ll also be looking at a nice profit, considering the home has hit the market for $4,599,000.“
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 12, 2019 9:45 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 12, 2019 9:58 PM |
I'm surprised they're not asking more. I would have thought at least $6-7 million. I doubt they're leaving the a rea. I would bet they'll send the kids to school at some Jewish school in the neighborhood. Unless they move to the UES. or the UWS. I've seen pictures of the family walking to synagogue for holidays. I've also see MAggie walking Ramona to school. I've rarely ever seen photos of their other kid.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 12, 2019 10:01 PM |
Now, why would you suppose they're sending the kids to "some Jewish school"? It does seem odd that they'd leave St. Ann's, though, unless it's not compatible with the kids' learning styles. There's a very good Friends' school in Bklyn.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 12, 2019 10:02 PM |

This info seems off. Contrary to what the article says, St. Ann's is not in Park Slope, so MG and PS wouldn't have been able to walk their kids to school during the years they were enrolled there. And at this point, I would think the kids are old enough that walking them to school is less rather than more of an issue. I also find it odd that they took the kids out of St. Ann's, but who knows what that is about.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 12, 2019 10:16 PM |
A Jewish school is likely because Maggie is Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 12, 2019 10:17 PM |
They’re probably divorcing, which is why all the excuses about walking the kids to school don’t make sense.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 12, 2019 10:25 PM |
R68, interesting. I got that vibe as well.
She seems exhausted by him, and seems to tolerate him, while he seems to be trying to engage with her in all the ways their marital therapist suggested, until he passive-aggressively drops HER cat to the floor, due to his not so covert resentment.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 12, 2019 10:30 PM |
Oh for fuck sake, it's not like he boiled the cat.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 12, 2019 10:35 PM |
The Jewish school suggestion is nonsense. Nearly all the top tier private schools in Bklyn and Manhattan are Jewish enough, and I'm sure they're not sending their daughters to a Yeshiva.
People take their kids out of St Ann's if its teaching style isn't right for their child. This happens in the best schools. Many kids thrive at St Ann's; some kids are more comfortable elsewhere.
The divorce theory is the most plausible. Did they ever actually get married?

by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 12, 2019 10:41 PM |
Indeed, r75.
Yes, r76, kitchen's on garden level, which isn't the basement. It's functionally the first floor, but it's at ground level, and the basement's below ground. Most row houses/brownstones are configured this way.

Unfortunately this isn't a Datalounge problem, this is an internet problem. People with normal dicks or people who are showers get called out. Then people wonder why more men won't do on screen nudity.

Why does he hate the cat?
by Anonymous | reply 81 | February 12, 2019 11:03 PM |
I have cats in my neighborhood that jump from roof tops, give it a rest.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 12, 2019 11:05 PM |
Yes, r80, or at least most of a full storey. It's possible for the garden level to be down a couple of shallow steps from the garden entry (most likely at the back of the house, opening onto the terrace and garden) so that the front steps to the parlor level don't seem so steep.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 12, 2019 11:06 PM |
R80 a lot of these brownstones are set up as the first floor being the kitchen/living/dining rooms, second floor the bedrooms and then third (and fourth if there is one) separate apartments. But it looks like they were using all four floors. Lots of climbing to get to your bedroom
by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 12, 2019 11:06 PM |
They're getting older, it's much easier for old people to live on one level.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 12, 2019 11:11 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 12, 2019 11:12 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 12, 2019 11:13 PM |
I bet the cat has heard all sorts of “goings on” from the overnight guest room.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | February 12, 2019 11:18 PM |
It does seem like their house has a lot of climbing, but also a number of living/library/sitting spaces.
I've seen renovations in brownstones where kitchen has been moved up to the main level (or higher) from what I would presume would be its original place on the garden level. (Or did the servants have cook in & schlep up from the basement?)
by Anonymous | reply 89 | February 12, 2019 11:20 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 95 | February 12, 2019 11:24 PM |
[quote] Now, they're not getting divorced except in some of your minds, correct?
Someone speculated it's the real reason they're selling the brownstone. It does make more sense than the rather convoluted explanation about walking kids to school, but only time will tell if it's correct.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | February 12, 2019 11:25 PM |
The cook or waitstaff didn't need to schlepp food up a flight of stairs, r80. Most of these large vertical houses had a dumbwaiter. The house I grew up in had one that traveled by a pulley from a cupboard on the garden level to one on the parlor level. It also had a laundry chute with a trap door in linen closets on each of the two upper floors straight down to the cellar (or maybe it was the kitchen, but I think the cellar). You just dropped your dirty clothes into the trap door and it landed in a basket a couple of floors down.

by Anonymous | reply 135 | February 13, 2019 12:55 AM |
R49 I completely agree. The house has a cheap, dirty-ish vibe about it, as if they often forget to change their sheets for much of the time. I find it a little depressing in the way that tired beige homes often can make us feel, and the tile over the fireplace is wretched...that's bathroom tile!

by Anonymous | reply 137 | February 13, 2019 1:05 AM |
Incredibly dreary and depressing. That rocking chair and the "full size bed" sectional are so sad. The shelving looks cheap. They don't own 1 nice piece of furniture. OP described it as "comfy and relatable." Who picks up Architectural Digest to see "comfy and relatable", much less sad and depressing. Did they spend all of their money on the teak tub?
Peter seems to constantly talk over Maggie.

Dropping a cat without regard really turns me off on Peter Sarsgaard. I didn't get any gay vibes off the old boy. I like the house and would like it more if were mine. I hope the chatter about these people divorcing is baloney, they seem quite normal.

I liked the house, loved the wide couches/sofas. Maggie Gyllenhaal looks good, I like her hair a lot. Peter Sarsgaard was giving off pajama vibes. He should have worn darker colors. I'm guessing the cat is not really that domesticated. The mistake Peter Sarsgaard made was in how he kept his grip on the cat when the cat obviously didn't want to be held. Yes, Peter could have and should have at least crouched down before releasing the cat.

They still have their landline hooked up in their bedroom, and the telephone set isn't even a fucking cordless.

Craft paper on the walls, an unfinished fire place and a full size bed sized couch = “tastefully decorated”?
The majority the population’s homes looked “lived in” and most people don’t hire interior designers. Most people’s homes aren’t worthy of being photographed for a magazine and neither was this one.

I lived on that street back in the late 80s. Got mugged twice, once in broad daylight going to work one morning. As far as streets in Park Slope go, it is nothing special, far from the Prospect Park and the Botanic Garden but walking distance from the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It's safe to walk there now.
Their brownstone has a lot of interior space and a decent size yard. A friend lived a few doors from where they are, identical layout, two sub-basements under the garden floor, IIRC. In the video they seem genuine and kind.
I mentioned this on The DL once. One Christmas Eve afternoon, I was shopping in a now defunct artsy tchothke store on 5th Avenue a few blocks from where they live. I was looking at something and a couple stood next to me discussing something on the shelf. It was her and Jake. He is handsome and tall, both seemed to have zero attitude.

They're getting a divorce because the cat doesn't like him. The claim that they share one desk is proof positive they are never in the house at the same time.I don't think anyone is actually currently living in the house despite the method acting decor. It looks empty, vaguely depressing and sort of smelly. Not cat litter smelly. It is possible the cat was just passing through and doesn't know any of these people. The cat's true humans would only have portraits of the cat in her real home as nature intended.

Maggie was on Kelly & Ryan this morning. They are still together and they have moved out of the townhouse. She didn't say where they went bu their oldest daughter understands why they moved but the younger kid was upset about moving. She said he husband tricked her into mowing the lawn in a bikini and he snapped a picture and she wasn't pleased so if they have a lawn to mow, maybe they went to the suburbs.
