Compulsive liars
Compulsive, pathological, whatever. I think someone I work with is one. They always have some crazy anecdote for any situation. If it isn't something he's done, it's someone he knows. Just recently I fact checked him on one of his lies by using Google. Total bullshit but I can't say anything.
What is their damage? Do these people just have nothing of value to say so they make shit up?

What's the mystery? When a compulsive liar lies, you listen. Be bored, unimpressed, unmoved, and see if the liar moves on to someone else. It's their only way of relating. It's not understandable beyond that possibility,

They don't tend to change. I'd love it if a compulsive liar explained the thrill.

Make up your own lies and make them even juicier and more dramatic than his. As you tell them, don't let him get in a word edgewise. When he tells his, interrupt him with more of yours, He will move on to someone else.

Was it Brian Williams who did this? He had some amazing experiences, but for some reason, they were not enough, and he embellished them and made up new ones.

Most of the pathological liars I've encountered keep their lies very mundane so as to not arouse suspicion. The lies never add up to a coherent narrative, but they're never outlandish. My step-sister, however, is a multi-faceted lunatic and grifter whose tales are always dramatic and memorable, like the year she pretended to have cancer. She recently told a relative that she and her daughter were living in motels despite the fact that another relative has been paying her rent for the last six years. I've never met someone who has had their wallet and car stolen as frequently as she has....

My ex was a compulsive liar. He lied about so many things, but he was terrible at it. I caught him a million times. He wasn't so much a storyteller as he had to cover up for his compulsive spending habits, bad finances, and ultimately cheating. Dump and run with these types.

I had a co-worker like that. Do what everyone does in that circumstance, OP, talk about him behind his back! Casually mention your google search where the bitchiest frau in the office will overhear, and let the office gossip eat away at him.
I don't know what motivates such people, but I suspect in some cases it has to do with extreme insecurity. They lie about their background and accomplishments because they think their real background and accomplishments are contemptible.
