WASHINGTON — When President Donald Trump delivers his delayed State of the Union address this week, looking back at him from the audience will be the first openly transgender officer to get promoted in the military.
Decorated Navy Lt. Cmdr. Blake Dremann will attend the speech as a guest of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, in hopes of sending a message to Trump that his ban on transgender people serving in the military will not stand.
“Lt. Cmdr. Dremann is a proud member of the U.S. Navy, he is a loyal patriot who has devoted his career to serving and protecting our country, and he is also one of the thousands of transgender service members serving in our military with honor and distinction," Gillibrand said.
Trump infamously rolled out his ban on Twitter in July of 2017, catching his then-secretary of defense, Jim Mattis, by surprise.
Since then, Mattis instituted a policy that wouldn't throw out current service members who are transgender, but would ban new ones from signing up and bar service members from beginning gender transition.
For Dremann’s part, he hopes the president — and the rest of the country — sees in him a human face, and realizes that he and people like him fully intend to keep doing their jobs, and rise above whatever walls are placed in the way.
"My intention is to simply bring a personal face to being transgender in the military,” Dremann said. "We are serving with honor, courage, and commitment to a cause greater than ourselves. And we will continue to do so."
