British Court's "World wide Injunction"
Two people have narrowly avoided jail after sharing information online said to be about James Bulger killer Jon Venables.
Richard McKeag, 28, and Natalie Barker, 36, admitted breaching a worldwide ban on revealing Venables’ identity by posting pictures and other details.
Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett, sitting with Mr Justice Warby, sentenced the pair, who are not known to each other, at a High Court hearing in London on Thursday.
The judges handed McKeag a 12-month sentence, while Barker was given eight months, both suspended for two years.
Lord Burnett said that, were it not for their personal circumstances, they would have been sent to prison immediately for their “serious” breaches of the injunction protecting Venables’ identity.
A court order was made in 2001, legally binding worldwide, which bans the publication of anything that reveals the identities of Venables and Robert Thompson.
"They have been living anonymously with new identities since being released from a life sentence for the kidnap, torture and murder of James in 1993, when they were aged 10."
Can someone explain how a British Court thinks it has jurisdiction over the entire world? Isn't the Empire long gone?

So what is the story? Kid killed someone, but were released from prison. How did they kill, when, where?

When the fuck is Britain going to realize in this day and age that their stupid fucking injunctions mean absolutely nothing?

r1 You really never heard of this case?
[quote] James Patrick Bulger (16 March 1990 – 12 February 1993) was a boy from Kirkby, Merseyside, England, who was abducted, tortured and killed by two young boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and Jon Venables (born 13 August 1982).Bulger was led away from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle as his mother had taken her eyes off him momentarily. His mutilated body was found on a railway line 2.5 miles (4 km) away in Walton, Liverpool, two days after his murder. Thompson and Venables were charged on 20 February 1993 with Bulger's abduction and murder.
[quote] They were found guilty on 24 November 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. They were sentenced to detention during Her Majesty's pleasure until a Parole Board decision in June 2001 recommended their release on a lifelong licence aged 18.[4] In 2010, Venables was sent to prison for breaching the terms of his licence, and was released on parole again in 2013. In November 2017, Venables was again sent to prison for possessing child abuse images on his computer.

So, two prepubescent sociopaths had a folie à deux and murdered a kid, but allowing people who might be potential victims is criminal?
Oh vey.

The article didn't say, but I assume these two are British citizens? I can't imagine a citizen of another country would be beholden to the laws of the UK.

This was just in the news as a film maker just released an independent (short?) film about this without first informing/getting permission from the murdered little boy’s parents for what he was planning.
The film has now been nominated for an Oscar.
I think the thing the parents were most upset about is not just that the story had been filmed at all, but the filmmakers decided to re-enact their little boy’s gruesome death.
Someone jump in here and correct me if I’m wrong.

I had to jog my memory, but this happened in England. Two boys lured a toddler away from his mother in a mall, and they bludgeon him to death and left his body on the railroad tracks.
Now, someone needs to tell the Burke-Ramsey-is-innocent poster that kids do have the strength to kill.

r11 [bold](The other one) Robert Thompson:[bold]
Thompson’s new identity is protect by an unprecedented injunction, which applies around the world, meaning that even searching for his address could lead to a prison sentence. He has not re-offended since being released, and in 2010 it was reported he was in a long-term relationship with a man who knows his true identity.
Thompson’s father left the family home five years before the attack in 1993, and his mother was an alcoholic and had depression. He had no history of violence prior to the murder.
[bold]Jon Venables on the other hand...:[bold]
In 2008, seven years after being released from prison, Venables was arrested after a drunken fight and was given a formal warning by the probation service. He was also given a caution for being in possession of Class A drug cocaine. Two years later he was sent back to prison after he was found with images of child sexual abuse.
The Parole Board recommended his release in 2013. However, in 2017 he was arrested again for possessing child abuse images, and sentenced to 40 months behind bars in February 2018, almost 25 years to the day after he murdered Bulger. He may now stay behind bars forever if the Parole Board rule that he poses too much of a risk.

I was believed for years that Robert Thompson was relocated to Perth with his family and a new identity, and did go on to kill an eight year old girl in a public toilet in 2006. The person they arrested moved from the UK to Australia.
"There were rumours that convicted killer Dante Wyndham Arthurs, 24, was in fact Thompson – both shared the same birthday, lived in England as children and had similar looks."
"There is no connection between the man arrested in Western Australia and the individuals involved in the James Bulger case," a British High Commission spokesman said at the time."

Dante Arthurs also moved to Australia around the same time Thompson was released from jail in 2001.

Another summary of the crime including a very quick bit of video of the killers takign the victim.
English law presumes they were too young to understand the ethical questions of right and wrong. The details of the crime would indicate otherwise to me.

R15 Absolutely.
They came across multiple adults - the toddler was crying for his mother - and they lied and said they were taking him back to her. They sexually abused the little lad then bludgeoned him to death with a brick and left his body on the railway line.
One of the most gruesome child killings by children anywhere at any time as far as I know...

Wow, one of those killers revealed his identity and the court bent over backward to give him another identity, and that's so crazy. I mean why did they give them so many chances. That poor baby had not -- a -- one.

R18 Unfortunately, he is eligible for parole this year. So much is suspect about this case.

Is it certain that Dante Wyndham Arthurs is not Thompson? Because there are definitely physical similarities.

r20 As you can read at r12 Thompson is gay, in a long relationship with a man and never reoffended. Another article stating this below. I think Arthurs would've been blonder as a child too, Thompson's hair and eyebrows were darker than Arthurs' even as a kid.

I read r12 but saw comments online saying that was a cover story, and Thompson really was Arthurs. I'm guessing that's just conspiracy theory.

It’s not like the parents are a danger to anyone else.

There was a fiction book, Boy A, later turned into a movie, with Andrew Garfield playing one of the two convicted killers shortly after his release as he tries to rehabilitate into society. The film was fiction. Garfield won a BAFTA for his role. This was about ten years ago.

The American justice system is oftentimes too harsh but from what I've seen of other countries leniency, I prefer ours. Like that guy who killed 77 teenagers in Norway and got 21 years. (Yes, it can be extended indefinitely by parole boards but that fucker should be dead or suffering, not living in Norway's Hilton-like prison!)
