Disco camp, if such a beast exists.

I'm fascinated by how such a thing could ever have happened. What were the kids in this audience thinking as this nightmare abomination was forced upon them?

[R2] too coked up to care

by Anonymousreply 3January 29, 2019 8:05 PM

Disco Duck. Disco Star Wars. There was no limit to the insanity of disco novelties.

The broadway divas had some interesting detours in the 1970's. Carol Channing went to Nashville for a couple of country albums.

I'm surprised Ethel Merman didn't go the country route instead of disco, given her association with Annie Get Your Gun. She did appear on Hee Haw, though.

Disco was spilling out into everything.

Doung and Yslexic! A few nan!

What was she thinking by doing that album?! That Dutch oven she was trapped into on her wedding night must have left some permanent brain damage.

by Anonymousreply 12January 29, 2019 8:48 PM

It's not much good outside of the "Show Business" track which has some fun stuff in it with the backup singers. The disco beat was added afterward and the arrangements could be so much better, even if they are Peter Matz, she just sings the same old songs the same old way. That's also the problem with her performances on Hee Haw and at Grand Old Opry.

It would have worked better if she'd taken a leaf from Ethel's Ridin' High and done covers of other then contemporary disco and pop tunes.

by Anonymousreply 13January 29, 2019 8:57 PM

She should have done an all-reggae album.

by Anonymousreply 14January 29, 2019 9:03 PM

Her early foray into hip hop was a surprise to all of us.

Yeah-- watch it, buster.

by Anonymousreply 16January 29, 2019 10:56 PM

When this came out it was the final nail in the coffin for disco.

by Anonymousreply 17January 30, 2019 1:44 AM

R13 is right. It sounds like a disco track was just added to her vocals from any number of previous recordings.

Robert Goulet at r10 on the other hand, is clearly modulating his delivery to the disco generation.

It’s hopelessly misguided but all the more glorious for his earnest effort. I love it. Thank you greatly, r10.
