Debbie Allen just announced. He had a great voice and handsome too. Let's appreciate his music in this thread

[quote]I have lost my dearest friend and creative partner James Ingram to the Celestial Choir. He will always be cherished, loved and remembered for his genius, his love of family and his humanity. I am blessed to have been so close. We will forever speak his name.❤️

I wasn't a huge fan, but this makes me really sad. I associate him with my 80s childhood.

by Anonymousreply 12January 29, 2019 7:19 PM

He had a beautifully toned and powerful baritone voice.

We don't hear many baritone voices these days in pop and r&b music. John Legend is the only famous one I can think of and he doesn't compare to Ingram

by Anonymousreply 13January 29, 2019 7:19 PM

R12 lol I didn't know how many people would care so I just started posting them but please feel free to post others

Oh no. What a loss. He was a fantastic person besides his awesome talent.

by Anonymousreply 16January 29, 2019 7:27 PM

R16 that's nice to hear. Did you know him? Or what did you read about him? I don't know anything about him besides his wonderful voice

by Anonymousreply 17January 29, 2019 7:33 PM

No one is reporting a cause of death that I can find.

R18 TMZ is saying brain cancer

by Anonymousreply 21January 29, 2019 7:45 PM

Everyone knows it's all about "One Hundred Ways." RIP James, you were one of the best.

by Anonymousreply 22January 29, 2019 7:47 PM

He was only 66 and had been treated for brain cancer “for an extended time.”

by Anonymousreply 23January 29, 2019 7:49 PM

No! Dammit! "Just Once" takes me all the way back to junior high school. RIP

by Anonymousreply 24January 29, 2019 8:01 PM

Wow sad. I didn't realize he was so young. His music was a huge part of my 80s soundtrack. Looking at his wikipedia and I'm surprised to see he only released 5 albums over 3 decades.

Just Once was used to devastating effect in the final scene of The Last American Virgin.

Never heard of him. Was going to the Met in the 80s. I'm sure he was a nice person.

by Anonymousreply 26January 29, 2019 10:28 PM

Each time a great singer from the 60s, 70s and 80s dies it just hits harder how untalented most of the popular people in "music" are today. While there are thousands of amazing singers out there, for whatever reason the public and record labels are mostly focused on ones who can't sing that well and release garbage singles.

by Anonymousreply 27January 29, 2019 10:55 PM

So is it confirmed he Yah Mo Be Dead?

by Anonymousreply 28January 29, 2019 10:57 PM

Same age as I am. Always unnerving when you hear about someone your age or younger buying the farm.

by Anonymousreply 29January 29, 2019 11:06 PM

I can't breath!

by Anonymousreply 30January 29, 2019 11:07 PM

R25, the problem is that no one told that little skank whore that "Rick" was GAY!

by Anonymousreply 31January 29, 2019 11:29 PM

Phenomenal talent and hot as hell in his prime. Interesting that practically all of his hit songs were with other people.

by Anonymousreply 32January 29, 2019 11:40 PM

No worries, we still have Jeffrey Osborne.

by Anonymousreply 33January 29, 2019 11:40 PM

R5 what a stupid song!

by Anonymousreply 34January 29, 2019 11:46 PM

It seems like more & more people are dying from brain cancer = Teddy Kennedy, John McCain, Beau Biden, James Ingram. It seems like someone else as well.

Those are just people in the public eye.

Wonder why it seems more prevalent?

by Anonymousreply 35January 29, 2019 11:50 PM

Shit I haven’t heard that name in 30 years!

by Anonymousreply 36January 29, 2019 11:55 PM

R33, I thought the same thing. Jeffrey... I like him more than James but I have albums by both. Yes, it is amazing that men with voices like them just don't get played or seen these days. Talent is sometimes subjective but James was actually talented. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 37January 30, 2019 12:00 AM

R35 Wait until we're all bombarded with 5G radiation!

by Anonymousreply 38January 30, 2019 12:00 AM

Baby Come To Me was my mom's jam back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 39January 30, 2019 12:00 AM

Baby come in me. Let me wrap my legs around you this was meant to be.

by Anonymousreply 40January 30, 2019 12:04 AM

The Dude is a fucking amazing album, and a lot of it can be attributed to James.

by Anonymousreply 41January 30, 2019 12:07 AM

Depressing.

by Anonymousreply 42January 30, 2019 12:07 AM

r26 is so Above It All.

by Anonymousreply 43January 30, 2019 12:09 AM

R27, Exactly! Watching these videos reminds me of what we've been missing. Great musicians, people who could make great music, that stirs us and motivates. He was so very talented and handsome. A real knockout. I'm sorry that he struggled with cancer for such a long time. RIP, you gorgeous, amazing man.

Wow, just wow! Seriously hard to believe. RIP

by Anonymousreply 49January 30, 2019 12:24 AM

Great singer and unappreciated. One of my all time favorites.

by Anonymousreply 50January 30, 2019 12:24 AM

Love that Donna Summer album, the best of her post-disco albums. Very underrated.

by Anonymousreply 51January 30, 2019 12:30 AM

Was he gay?

by Anonymousreply 52January 30, 2019 12:32 AM

R52, On DL, we're pretty much all gay, but he was married to the same woman since 1975. So me (gay guy) says he was straight. I don't need to poach and claim the straight guys. He was a great artist, and his handsomeness and talent don't have a lot to do with his sexuality (in my opinion). BTW, I know this is DL, but I don't want to disrespect his wife. If anyone has anything REAL to tell about him, I guess I won't object. But let her enjoy his legacy, and know that other people admired and respected him.

by Anonymousreply 53January 30, 2019 12:41 AM

Geez, I just ASKED if he was gay. Lighten up.

by Anonymousreply 54January 30, 2019 12:43 AM

I assumed he was gay, but apparently he was married. Who knew?

Love "Mystery of Love", the track he did with Donna Summer.

by Anonymousreply 58January 30, 2019 1:08 AM

I confess I hadnt listened to his music in a while, but watching the videos reminded me of how much I loved his stuff back in the day. And how much of it I knew word for word ! This man dies and that fucking Bieber lives on and on,its grossly unfair.

by Anonymousreply 59January 30, 2019 1:12 AM

I was just talking about his spectacular voice the other day. Baby Come To Me is one of my faves. His voice sounded so pure, and he seemed to sing so effortlessly. Thank you James for sharing your voice.

The only time being a Trump supporter is a good thing. Never have to worry about getting it.

Just Once was played over and over again in The Last American Virgin. Great song.

by Anonymousreply 62January 30, 2019 4:55 AM

A friend of my worked with James, but no juicy gossip. Just a nice funny guy.

by Anonymousreply 63January 30, 2019 5:21 AM

R25, yes, that was a great use of "Just Once." I'm sure I shed a tear while watching that scene. So many great songs, great voice. RIP.

Holy Shit, I just googled. I never knew he was gay, too!

R54 this the the medics we are treating R53 for signs of a heart attack. You triggered him!

by Anonymousreply 68January 30, 2019 8:22 AM

1990 live performances of "One Hundred Ways" and "I Don't Have The Heart"

what a novelty he sounded as good as the record! That's missing with most "singers" these days

He was a good man.

by Anonymousreply 70February 1, 2019 12:52 AM

Sounds like Michael McDonald

by Anonymousreply 71February 1, 2019 3:46 AM

Yes, he had great tone. For me that's what is missing in music today. So many of the voices sound autotuned or computerized, there's no immediacy to their voices, so there's a lack of connection. It could be anybody (or any robot) singing the songs.

James didn't have that problem at all.

by Anonymousreply 72February 1, 2019 5:28 AM

Great singer but schmaltzy songs

by Anonymousreply 73February 5, 2019 7:43 PM

James at the recording of “We Are The World”. Hilarious moment around the 23:40 mark 😄
