I saw EXTREMELY WICKED last night and it's good! 3.5 stars out of 4.
****SPOILERS AHEAD*****
Thankfully, the tone of the movie is not glib and glamorous like the trailer makes it out to be. There are catchy pop tunes from the era playing, but that's usually when Bundy is working on his prison breaks or having good times with his girlfriends. The overall tone is serious and dramatic, though it spares the audience most of the horror of Bundy's violence.
Efron and Bundy are not the protagonist. The movie is from Bundy's misled girlfriend's point of view -- Liz Kendall, as played by Lily Collins. It follows Bundy from his first arrest, through his trials and ultimately his execution. It's usually a courtroom drama, with the home and escape drama thrown in. There are some flashbacks, but the grisly murders are mostly excluded, save for a couple of court photos of victims and oral descriptions of their mutilations.
The director Joe Berlinger has done some great work in the past, including BROTHER'S KEEPER, PARADISE LOST (the West Memphis Three documentary) and a Metallica documentary (James Hetfield plays a police officer in the movie, and he attended the Sundance premiere). Berlinger's great work has been documentary before, but now he can add drama to his résumé without any shame.
Zac gets nude and shows his backside when undressing for prison. But honestly, you've seen more of his body before, in other movies and in better condition. There are a couple of sex scenes, but they don't linger and they're not titillating or romantic. They're either mathematical or creepy — Ted Bundy examining his girlfriend's body with a flashlight while she sleeps or bribing prison guards to let him bang a later girlfriend aggressively during a visitation. It's not played for pleasure or romance -- just kind of cold and scary.
Efron did a good job -- easily the best acting performance he's ever had to do. At first, he seems like a normal guy and acts warmer than a psycho or Bundy. But in the last half of the film, he gets colder and more psycho. The cinematographer did some creepy lighting of his face and eyes in shadow while he confronted the camera which was really creepy.
Jim Parsons and Jon Malkovich were fabulous, as usual. Kaya Scodelario as one of the Bundy groupies was an interesting revelation -- awkward and a bit psycho herself.
Overall, I was impressed. I expect the film to get good enough reviews, but probably not a lot of awards or box office because it wasn't THAT challenging, it's not the kind of movie Zac's fangirls like and straight, male resistance to Efron in the media and industry will always be strong (envy, homophobia and Zac's history of fluff).
Zac was looking hot enough at the premiere. His hair is dyed platinum blond for some reason and he wore white after Labor Day: white sneakers and a white tee under a bomber jacket. But something you want to bang. I have to say his face is not aging gracefully, however. It's starting to look weathered and bloated at the same time. Not extremely, but not fresh anymore. Drugs are a bitch.
I'm happy to answer questions that people may have.
