There aren't a lot of other options available. The sad thing is that Pelosi is smart enough to know that the story was always going to end with the wall being built, one way or another, so why make all the workers suffer just to show how long you could hold out against it?

R7, that fucking wall is not going to be built. As soon as this national emergency is challenged in the courts, it’s going to drag and drag, maybe for years. Not to mention they won’t have the money even with $5 billion to build this fucking wall. Try $50 billion.

Would 7 billion even cover the costs of finishing the wall across southern California? It would cost ten times what he is saying to build a wall all the way from CA to TX. Plus, the eminent domain cases will be tied up in the courts for decades. The wall is never going to happen. Ever.

He lives in a Blue state but raises the subject often enough and is surprised, every time, when I tell him I disagree with whatever policy he’s complaining about, and don’t care to chat about it with him. It killed me when I heard him refer to Liberals as “haters”. Should I have said, “oh, no, you should take that personally.”?
Then my twin - she’s a great woman and is just brainwashed by the cult. She also can’t shut up about it, which is unfortunate, particularly since her husband and his sister only need to overhear her, and they start shouting. Usually they start with “you know what really bothers me? It’s...”.

Likewise, Don Jr.? Don met with the Russians at Trump Tower. I think he arranged the Trump side of the meeting. And he lied repeatedly about the meeting, admitting only to whatever newly leaked info came out.
And also Jared. He revised some of his government employment forms multiple times, as his info was discovered. I think I heard 40 times. I once had a secret clearance and maybe they would ignore one revision of the application.
How can these losers still be unindited? I can only hope it is because Mueller is using them to get Trump. But still?

More effective and less expensive. I have no idea what about a wall is “serious” or not. They could invest in border guards, drones, motion detectors, and the like.
We could also create a national employment ID card; require all employers check for such an ID; and fine employers who do not. Then hire people to go around employers checking for these IDs. As long as there are jobs, there’ll be immigrants to fill them.
Then, improve processing of asylum seekers, which are very different from illegal immigrants. We are obligated by treetie to treat them differently.

The Dems position benefits the country by not increasing the National Debt for the President’s vanity project. Because buckling would only encourage Trump to repeat his tactics in other areas. Because a $5 billion initial payment would only encourage additional funding, that we can’t afford on something that will not work.

Trump wants a “prorated down payment for the Wall”.
Nancy said:
She didn’t know if Trump knows what he means by “down payment”. When asked about “prorated payment”, she replied that she didn’t know what that means. Other than it meaning that Trump wants money to get started on paying for the Wall, something Nancy refuses to do.

I will seriously consider Republican's desire to build a Border wall, the moment they fine every multi-million Business that had illegaly employed migrant workers Hundreds of thousands of dollars for each violation staring, for example: Chicken processing plants, Corporate Farms, Wal-mart distribution Centers, and huge Landscaping/Nursery Centers.
I believe the Republican Party is against Illegal Immigration like I believe Billionaires are FOR the Estate Tax.

Those things would only notify law enforcement that illegals have crossed the border. It's made completely useless if a judge then prevents their deportations and releases them into the general population (likely).. It would be essential to find a solution that prevents people from physically entering the United States.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | January 25, 2019 3:04 AM |

In any event, no wall will prevent people from physically entering the US. And, the Wall would instead cause the starvation of other programs, the ones that work, from being properly funded.

I hope that he declares a national emergency as a way to salve his wounded ego and we get the government reopened. Fine, if that's what it takes. The next Democratic president will appreciate the leg up for climate change and guns.
This wall will never be built. First, the emergency declaration will be challenged. That will take time to make it through the courts. Then there are the eminent domain lawsuits. Then the environmental impact lawsuits. Plus, five or seven million will build a very small section of this monstrosity to his ego -- which seems entirely appropriate.
He will be long gone before anything really happens. The next president will put a fast stop to this lunacy.

R67, +1. Did Republicans tighten immigration controls when Bush junior was in power and they controlled both chambers of Congress? Or during the Trump administration before the Democrats won the House? Nooooope. Big Business loves cheap immigrant labor, and Republicans love every word that comes out of Big Business's mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 25, 2019 3:15 AM |
R65, I read that if Trump declares an emergency they don’t have to do an environmental impact study. Which might be why he wants to do it that way. The construction companies that do it would be happy to exterminate every rare species between here and the Rio Grande.
It’s my understanding the wall area includes areas where animals travel back and forth for water and for breeding. If it cut off water for a lot of endangered species, it wouldn’t pass the environmental impact study anyway. Not to mention a lot of that land is Native American treaty land and they’ve already said Trump can’t have it.
The real reason Trump is doing this is that he wants to establish s legal precedent that if the President loses Congress, it doesn’t matter, because if Congress doesn’t do what he wants, he can just override Congress. The idea that he lost a branch of the government shouldn’t hold him back at all, in his eyes. Just ignore that the House exists and move on without them.
That is unconstitutional as hell. Trump’s excuse would be that he doesn’t need to worry about the constitution because he’s a businessman and therefore the constitution doesn’t apply to him. He wants to run the country as a private citizen, as if government policies are just crooked business deals.
The Congress has the power of the purse, per the constitution. If he tries to steal money from bills Congress passed previously to pay for it, that’s illegal. That’s years of legal challenges, but it doesn’t mean he won’t get something. Nancy needs to stall. Maybe she could sign a bill saying the wall building will start 20 years from now. Then Trump will be gone and they can drop it long before then.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 25, 2019 3:18 AM |

The only way these shitstains learn is through pain. Let them forfeit their tax refunds (if they even get one this year thanks to the tax scam) for their precious wall. I want endless stories about their sniveling because they don't get a refund or they can't get their farm loans.

R72, The "real reason" is that the steel companies Trump would make sure got the contracts are owned by RUSSIAN OLIGARCHS, including Putin and Roman Abramovich.
Every single thing Trump has done, does, and seeks to do is to re-pay his billion-dollar debt to his Russian bankers.
If shutting down the Federal government, if declaring a national emergency, if shaving his HEAD, would be what Putin told him in secret is what would help pay down that personal debt, you'd see a bald Trump.

It will just make him look worse and worse and his legacy even more terrible than it already does.

But apparently he's telling the press he has built "so much wall" (even though he hasn't any). So he's also conditioning the Magats that the wall has miraculously sprung into being, while he shut the government because the wall isn't being built. Go figure.
MSNBC pundits were joking tonight that this may be a way out of this mess - let Donald tell his deplorables that he built the wall, and eliminated crime, and they will believe him sight unseen - so everybody can move on.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 2, 2019 3:04 AM |
Can you imagine if every single country on the face of the earth built a wall around itself? What if the European countries bordering Germany walled it in? If the French, Polish Czech, Austrians, Swiss, Danes, Dutch, and Belgians can live next to a country that once overran them and slaughtered millions, America should be able to live next to Mexico without stupid walls!
I have zero per cent fear of Mexicans and there are many where I live. I don't worry about Mexicans (or Central of South Americans) shooting at me in the mall or flying airplanes into buildings. They only want to work for the most part. Yes, there's the drug trade but it's us Americans doing the buying. If not the Mexicans or American citizens, some one else will fill that gap.
Instead of building a ludicrous, stupid, ridiculous wall, why not take that 30 billion plus and invest it in Mexico and Central America so their citizens might be successful where they're born?
Anyway, trump is a craven idiot. Everything he does is stupid.

No. Congress can pass a joint resolution to rescind the NE. But the president has to sign it.
However he has to find a specified emergency power to use. Most likely the wall will be designated as a “military construction project”. But then he needs to use money allocated to other defense projects to do it. That won’t be popular. Also the idea that his stupid wall bordering a friendly country is a military defense project is utter horseshit and will likely be challenged in court.

We had a similar argument some time ago that the red states give the least and take the most. So I was wrong about the taxes but right about the federal aid.

If you have any understanding of physical and information security you know that one layer doesn't necessarily work. So there's another motive for the Orange Asshole to want his wall. I say we build him into the wall.
It still astounds me that we've not marched on D.C. with torches and pitchforks and toss the Orange Asshole out of office. Or have we been so cowed we don't realize they govern with the CONSENT of the people.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
