Why did Susan Sarandon's career go straight down the shitter?

She didn't deserve her Oscar for Dead Man Walking. Period.

She is probably bi polar but she works...don't worry about her, she is a woman past sixty, what do you expect?

She illustrates the pattern of those who get nominated for several Oscars, finally win, and then are never nominated again. She was nominated for Best Actress in 1981 and then four times in a five year period (!) (1991, 1992, 1994, 1995), finally winning for Dead Man Walking. And then POOF! no more nominations. And not many compelling roles either, which is a shame. I am a big fan of hers and find her always compelling. In fact, I have never seen her give a bad performance.

She's not glamorous, but she is intrinsically sexy, and cerebral too. A thinking man's sexpot, if you will. She has also kept up her looks without resorting to a raft of misguided surgical procedures. And she's always had luscious (and natural) breasts.

She dropped off the face of the acting planet.

She was on Ray Donovan season 5.

She's worked steadily for 50 years in movies, theater, and TV. Predictably, the better roles dried up as she aged, but she does the best she can with whatever she gets. She's still a fantastic talent.

Her sagging boobies aside, she has aged amazingly well. If anything, whatever subtle surgery she has had got rid of her thyroid eyes, which was really her only major flaw (well aside from her saggy tits).

She’s like Michael Douglas in that they were both kind of B+ stars until they hit their 40s and then by the late 80s both were A+ list. Her career has had amazing longevity though. I know the shitter thing is now a DL joke but she really couldn’t be less suited for this thread.

To expound on the Meryl theory, this is what I think happened: Susan’s big years were in the 90’s. What else happened in the 90’s? M intentionally left Hollywood-for the majority of the decade really- to raise her kids. But remember, Hollywood NEVER left M. Not for a second. They did, however, trot out a raft of middle aged actresses- many of whom are really, really good- to keep Meryl’s seat warm, for when she got back. So the 90’s were pretty good years for ladies like G, Susan S, and Jessica Lange, etc.

And then one day M looked around and realized her next was empty and she placed a call her agents.

She was briefly (1990-6) a bigger star and more celebrated actress than Streep, who was seen at the time as a gargoyle.

Once Mamie was out of diapers and I was again accepting roles and acquiring annual nominations, Susan realized her true talent was for ping pong, not acting, and all was right in the world.
