What exactly is vocal fry?

Sort of like trying to speak low in your throat, as if you just woke up.

It's such an unpleasant guttural sound that comes from the throats of females who think it impresses others when in fact most people hear it and think exactly the opposite. Martha Stewart is famous for it. I can't fathom why any female would think this sounds nice. It makes them sound like a goat bleating for feed.

It's twenty something year old women who sound like they smoke four packs a day.

More and more men - STRAIGHT men in their 20s are doing vocal fry on the west coast. It’s replacing “dude voice.”

It's been suggested it stems from women lowering their voices to sound more like men so they're taken more seriously.

It's as irritating as the "make every statement into a question" where the voice goes up at the end. It's incredibly pathetic.

I thought the whole "valley girl" phase was bad ,but this shit makes me want to kill.

I hate the Kardashian family speech patterns but that's not the only reason I don't watch.

One thing I do like about being a 58 year old is I give zero fucks about saying what I want. About a month ago i was trying a new hair salon and the girl they assigned to me had the worst vocal fry ever,so I politely asked for someone else and when they questioned why,I blatantly told them it was because her voice made my skin crawl. Im sure it didnt go over well,and 15 years ago id have never been so rude,but Im too old to be annoyed by stupidity.

Listen to the woman who does the voice work for MedMen radio ads. So irritating.

what is the accent called when they say something such as "like, what-EV-er". Some young woman was dining with her guy at a table uncomforably close to us in a restaurant and all her conversation was like that.

I don't like it when people say mou'in for mountain or ki'in for kitten and so on. It sounds so ignorant and it's making inroads into public speech.

There is nothing more irritating than hearing a young woman with fry as a newsreader. Go to a voice therapist or don't get the job.
