What exactly is vocal fry?

And does anyone have a video of someone speaking normally, and then speaking in vocal fry, to show the difference?

by Anonymousreply 30January 23, 2019 2:27 AM

Sort of like trying to speak low in your throat, as if you just woke up.

It's such an unpleasant guttural sound that comes from the throats of females who think it impresses others when in fact most people hear it and think exactly the opposite. Martha Stewart is famous for it. I can't fathom why any female would think this sounds nice. It makes them sound like a goat bleating for feed.

It's twenty something year old women who sound like they smoke four packs a day.

by Anonymousreply 3January 22, 2019 1:31 PM

Here's a video about it.

R1 I made it to 16 seconds-- by which time I was ready to kill any living thing that crossed my path

by Anonymousreply 5January 22, 2019 2:13 PM

Just listen to the young women on NPR and you will hear vocal fry.

by Anonymousreply 6January 22, 2019 2:25 PM

Ha, R6 - I was just about to post this link: This American Life and vocal fry.

I sound like this when I’m tired (which is frequent). I don’t understand how someone can make their voice sound like this purposely,

by Anonymousreply 8January 22, 2019 2:31 PM

Why would anyone speak like that on purpose?

by Anonymousreply 9January 22, 2019 2:31 PM

Scarlett Johansson owns this thread.

by Anonymousreply 10January 22, 2019 2:34 PM

R9 because they're idiots.

More and more men - STRAIGHT men in their 20s are doing vocal fry on the west coast. It’s replacing “dude voice.”

by Anonymousreply 12January 22, 2019 2:45 PM

It's been suggested it stems from women lowering their voices to sound more like men so they're taken more seriously.

by Anonymousreply 13January 22, 2019 2:53 PM

It's as irritating as the "make every statement into a question" where the voice goes up at the end. It's incredibly pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 14January 22, 2019 2:53 PM

I thought the whole "valley girl" phase was bad ,but this shit makes me want to kill.

by Anonymousreply 15January 22, 2019 2:53 PM

Kristen Stewart has given entire film performances, fried vocally.

by Anonymousreply 16January 22, 2019 2:57 PM

That notorious internet porn conman whore Jake Orion is a good example of male vocal fry.

by Anonymousreply 17January 22, 2019 3:02 PM

I hate the Kardashian family speech patterns but that's not the only reason I don't watch.

How does sounding like a porn actress accomplish this?

by Anonymousreply 19January 22, 2019 3:04 PM

Ira Glass concludes his feature telling "old people" to "get over it."

He's basically telling NPR's most supportive donors to go fuck themselves.

by Anonymousreply 20January 22, 2019 3:07 PM

One thing I do like about being a 58 year old is I give zero fucks about saying what I want. About a month ago i was trying a new hair salon and the girl they assigned to me had the worst vocal fry ever,so I politely asked for someone else and when they questioned why,I blatantly told them it was because her voice made my skin crawl. Im sure it didnt go over well, and 15 years ago id have never been so rude, but Im too old to be annoyed by stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 21January 22, 2019 3:25 PM

Listen to the woman who does the voice work for MedMen radio ads. So irritating.

by Anonymousreply 22January 22, 2019 3:44 PM

Forget waterboarding. A loop of the video at r1 would be enough to make anyone talk.

by Anonymousreply 23January 22, 2019 9:25 PM

How is this different from valley girl? What an I missing? I sort of get what it is but not entirely.

by Anonymousreply 24January 22, 2019 10:32 PM

R24, Valley Girls were peppy bimbos. Vocal fry girls are smug and so over it.

by Anonymousreply 25January 22, 2019 10:54 PM

what is the accent called when they say something such as "like, what-EV-er". Some young woman was dining with her guy at a table uncomforably close to us in a restaurant and all her conversation was like that.

by Anonymousreply 26January 22, 2019 11:03 PM

I don't like it when people say mou'in for mountain or ki'in for kitten and so on. It sounds so ignorant and it's making inroads into public speech.

by Anonymousreply 27January 23, 2019 1:42 AM

There is nothing more irritating than hearing a young woman with fry as a newsreader. Go to a voice therapist or don't get the job.

Tom Fitzgerald of ‘Tom and Lorenzo’ website/podcast. I am completely tormented by his vocal fry but love them so I keep listening. I included link if anyone is interested in hearing them.
